2022 Baftas: The Best Hair Looks And How To Get Them

With as much glitz and glamour as you can squeeze on a red carpet, the BAFTAs returned for its 75th year last night, after being reduced to a virtual event in 2021. HJ noticed an overarching hair theme of sophistication and simplicity, but we spoke to a few experts to see which looks came out on top.

2022 BAFTAs - The best hair looks

Millie Bobby Brown

Baftas hair “Millie Bobby Brown’s look at this year’s BAFTAs was definitely one of my favourites,” says Joana Neves, editorial director at ALTERNA Europe. “She wore her hair pinned back in a super sleek, almost ‘wet look’ style, leaving just her curtain fringe out to give the hair an edgy finish. Although a simple style, this look really does make a statement due to the high shine on the hair and to create this, products are key. I love to use Caviar’s Anti-Aging Smoothing Anti-Frizz Blowout Butter in the hair before blow-drying using a paddle brush to sleek the hair back and give it ultimate smoothness and shine. For further glass-like shine and hold, finish with hairspray to set your look in place.”

Emma Watson

baftas hair “Emma Watson’s hair look was understated yet chic. She wore her hair in a clean middle parting, with the front of her hairstyle sleek and smooth and pinned into place with hairpins. Whilst the rest of the hair was styled in nonchalant, beach-like waves. The pins made this look unique and ensured all eyes would be on her. To achieve a sleek look at the front, I would apply a styling mousse, distributing the product with a comb to smooth the hair before inserting the hairpins to keep the style in place. I would then spritz through a shine spray to give that section added shine and a light hold. For the back, I would gently tousle the hair with heated styling irons, taking larger sections for soft, effortless-looking waves before finishing with a texture spray for added volume and movement,” added Joana.

Florence Pugh

florence pugh naftas “The wet-look was definitely one of the most prominent trends for this year’s BAFTAs hair looks and I loved how Florence Pugh teamed this with her edgy pixie cut. Her deep side parting provided volume and further drama, as well as crystal embellishments for a mesmerising finish. When creating this look, I would always start by creating the deep side parting first. I would then distribute a mix of hair gel and hair serum throughout the hair before using a hairdryer and paddle brush to work the hair to the right of the parting for added volume. The mix of hair gel and serum will give the style that super wet and glossy appearance, as well as hold. Finish with a high hold hairspray to lock the style in place and to ensure there are little-to-no flyaways to perfect the look,” says Suzie McGill, artistic director at Rainbow Room International and Schwarzkopf ambassador.

Ariana DeBose

baftas hair “The individual who stood out for me was the fabulous Ariana DeBose – she looked absolutely stunning. Wearing a gorgeous Carolina Herrera gown, Ariana styled her hair into a deep side parting bob, with lots of volume. When recreating this look, I would advise blow-drying the hair with a professional volume shampoo and conditioner. Next, take a small amount of the Schwarzkopf Osis+ Upload Volume Cream and distribute evenly throughout the hair. Then part the hair, with a deep side parting – this creates a real drastic look! Next, the blow dry – using a large barrel brush, lift the hair, focusing the heat at the root to create a lift and bring it back towards yourself. Once dry, lightly use straighteners to smooth the hair and create a simple bend at the ends, inwards to the head,” shares Phillip Bell, a partner at Ishoka Hair and Beauty.

Rebel Wilson

baftas hair Andrew Smith, founder of Andrew Smith Salons adds: “My favourite BAFTAs hair look must be this year’s host, Rebel Wilson. Her look was gorgeous, with her hair parted to the side with beautiful flowing waves. Sometimes the simple looks are the ones we remember the most. When recreating this look, ensuring the colour remains vibrant and the hair looks flawless is key. To prep for this look, I would recommend washing the hair with JOICO Blonde Life Brightening Shampoo and Conditioner – this keeps the colour fresh, free of any warmth and of course – bright! Next, part the hair slightly to the side and apply a small amount of oil evenly throughout. Then, using a large barrel brush, begin your blow-dry. Taking the hair in small sections, use your barrel brush to create a blow-dry curl, holding for 5 seconds without heat and then allowing it to sit freely – continue around the head. Once complete, brush the curls out to reveal a gorgeous wave. Then, take one section and place this behind the shoulder – finish with a gorgeous shine spray.”

Lady Gaga

lady gaga “Stepping out in a dazzling emerald green dress and Hollywood inspired waves, Lady Gaga looked incredible at the 2022 BAFTAs. Her hair was styled into a super-soft wave that tumbled down her back on one side and sat forward over her shoulder on the other. Her old Hollywood aesthetic meant Gaga’s hair was parted deep to one side. Her hair was then swept across her forehead in a perfect position to frame her face and allow her incredible jewelled earrings to be seen. To create a Hollywood wave like this, the key is in the preparation. Use a smoothing balm and hydrating products to remove any unwanted frizz from the hair before styling. Using a curling tong to add a wave through the hair in one direction – towards the face. Be sure to brush the curls out using a soft bristle brush to create that gorgeous shape. Use a balm product to push the hair back away from the face at one side to create that lift above the ear. Secure this with grips if needed and always ensure they cannot be detected at all. Finish with a mist of super-strong hairspray to lock this style in,” guides Simon Hill, owner of SESH Hairdressing.

Caitriona Balfe

caitriona balfe baftas “Belfast actor, Caitriona showcased super simplistic chic when it came to her BAFTAs hair look. She opted for power shoulders and a plunging neckline paired with a super sleek, wet-look bun. To create Caitriona’s wet-look style, it’s all in the products. Apply a soft gel to help you smooth all the hair down towards the nape. Use a comb to really brush through and remove any unwanted bumps and texture. Secure the hair into a tight, sleek bun by wrapping the hair round into itself and securing it with a hair bungee tie for a seamless finish. Apply a generous amount of your favourite long-lasting hair spray to complete the look,” says Brian Leo McCallum, owner of ROAR Hair and Beauty. So, I think we got all that. Deep side partings, wet-looks and super-soft, high-shine waves – do we spy some 2022 hair trends?
