In the past 21 years, Noleen Devlin's salon Hi-Teck has relocated no fewer than five times, but finding a more permanent home was the aim of the latest move.

"I wanted to boost the business and feel the security of not having to relocate again," says Noleen, who decided to buy a former residential property and turn it into a purpose-built salon and two apartments.

Initially Noleen was planning to convert the inside of the house, but was persuaded by architect Paul Hamill to demolish the existing building and create a new build with apartments to rent out above the salon. "Eventually the property will pay for itself without being solely dependent on the hairdressing salon," explains Noleen.

The design for the salon was geared towards creating a city look. "I wanted something that would be timeless and could be easily changed after a few years if re-vamping was required," says Noleen. As well as her architect, she teamed up with Mountfield Kitchens to come up with the look, having previously worked with them for the interior of her home.

"I wanted a salon which creates a wow factor for people when they come in," says Noleen. "The best thing I did was definitely buying my own premises. The worst thing is that I didn't do it sooner!"

Hi-Teck Hair Salon in brief...

How long did the work take?
From buying the property to moving in it took five years - two and a half of those involved waiting for building approval.

Were there any problems?
The bank was initially reluctant to give out a business loan as it was not considered a large amount, but was too much to be considered as a small loan. Thankfully after several meetings they agreed to go ahead.

What was the biggest bargain of the salon?
Retail stands in the Dekko closing down sale were half price at £350.
