Beverly C became the first female to be awarded an MBE for services to hairdressing when she received her investiture from the Queen on May 1.

After receiving the award at Buckingham Palace, dressed in a stunning cream suit and fascinator, Beverly told us she was thrilled to have her achievements recognised.

"It feels amazing," says Beverly. "When I won British Hairdresser of the Year for the first time and then got it again I didn't think anything could possibly beat that.

"But, when I was awarded this for services to the hairdressing industry it takes it to a totally different level. I was absolutely honoured."

Beverly has followed in the footsteps of celebrity hairdressers Trevor Sorbie, Charles Worthington, Vidal Sassoon, Nicky Clarke, Daniel Galvin and Errol Douglas, who was also honoured in this year's honours list.

She believes it is her long term commitment to the industry, that is being recognised rather than a specific achievement.

"It looks back at your entire hisrory," she adds. "They are looking at your overall contribution over a long period of timeand what contribution you have made and how you have made a difference to the industry.

"That in itself is really good - that you can get an award for being involved in a career for the last 25 years."

As one of the industries leading icons, Beverly has some sound advice for hairdressers hoping to follow in her footsteps and make it to the top.

She says: "You have to really love your career and all the aspects of it. But it's about not being afraid to go forward or afraid to take the next step.

"There are a lot of people out there who will help you. Set yourself small goals and enjoy the journey. "
