The iconic male film and rock 'n' roll stars that gripped the world in the 50s didn't just make headlines because of their performances, but their style - complete with short, sharp and perfectly tailored hair - created a fashion movement that is still evident today.
Since then we've seen a wild and wonderful mixture of men's haircuts, including the excessive new romantics look, big 80s hair, highlighted 'curtains' and of course, the look that required no hair at all- the skinhead.
Fast-forward to 2009, and men are still wearing variations of the traditional 40s and 50s haircuts, but there's also a big movement towards 80s 'anything goes' hair.
All this means that catering for today's male clients isn't as easy as it was when the whole male population opted for a grade two all over.

Advanced hair colour training qualifications are rapidly growing in popularity. They are an effective way to show that your staff have the highest level of expertise and can help boost the salon's profits.
"From a financial point of view, we have increased Wella Professionals Master Colour Expert prices by 20% to see our colourists that have the qualification," explains Darren Messias, creative director at Keith Hall Hairdressing, Midlands
"We have also seen a significant increase in new and colour-shy clients who are prepared to pay extra for time with the crème de la crème of colourists," he says.
As colour expert courses are of an advanced nature, they usually require five to seven years' previous experience and are spread over a period of three to six months. But they are well worth the effort according to these graduates.

What is the F.A.M.E team?
F.A.M.E is an acronym for The Fellowship Academy of Merit and Excellence. It was set up to promote a new generation of bright young hairdressers, nominated by Fellowship for British Hairdressing members. Candidates undergo a rigorous selection process before a final few are chosen to join the team.
Who runs it?
The Fellowship Chancellory is in charge of the rules and regulations, and the Fellowship Council appoints a F.A.M.E team manager and artistic director at two-year intervals. The current artistic director is Johnny Engstrom of Guy Kremer salon, Winchester, and team manager is hairdresser Dawn Bryant.

Many women who choose a smooth style for the office are looking for something a little bit different for a night out or a special occasion.
A look at the catwalk shows and the red carpet reveals celebrities are opting for something more classic and technical - and what celebrities want today, the girl on the street will want tomorrow.
It's all very well being known for your beautiful blow-dries, but to stay one step ahead of the rest - and enhance your career - you need to be adept at a variety of techniques.
And unless today's hairdressers learn the more traditional techniques of pin curling, barrel curling or Marcel waves, these techniques are in danger of disappearing.
We asked a selection of hairdressers how important it is that hairdressers learn these techniques.

What is Habia?
Habia stands for Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Authority and is the government-approved standards setting body for hair, beauty, nails, spa therapy, barbering and Afro hairdressing. It creates the standards that form the basis of all qualifications including NVQs, SVQs, apprenticeships, diplomas and foundation degrees. It also sets industry codes of practice.
What can it offer hairdressers?
Habia, based in Doncaster, Yorkshire, is a central point of contact for information, offering guidance on education, training, careers, business development, legislation, and salon safety. It works to raise the standards of training and education for hair, and beauty, nails, spa therapy, barbering and African type hair hairdressing.
Who is it aimed at?
Habia is primarily the voice to government of employers in the whole hair, beauty, spa and nails sector on education and skills issues and how these affect business performance. Whether you are an employer, employee or trainee, Habia can offer advice on a wide range of issues. Employers can find the latest legislation and health and safety updates, while trainees can find colleges and academies to suit their needs.
Is it an independent organisation or does it work in conjunction with anyone else?
Habia is an independent, not for profit organisation recognised by Government. It is not a trade association. Habia works with all industry organisations, individual employers, learning providers, awarding bodies, and Government and its agencies across the UK. Habia works closely with the awarding body VTCT - Vocational Training Charitable Trust in raising standards, promoting qualifications and creating new education programmes and training resources.
Does this just apply to the UK or overseas as well?
British hairdressing is held in high esteem around the world and for the past 15 years Habia has worked with partners around the world to achieve recognition for UK standards and promote good practice. This involves reciprocity agreements, so that holders of UK qualifications do not need to re-qualify to work in that nation, and licensing arrangements, where that nation wants to use the UK standards in their qualifications. The organisation can bring companies together for training and business, arrange visas and promotes the work of UK hairdressers across the globe.
Does it cost anything to use the service?
Its website, www.habia.org, is free to use and as well as offering the latest news and advice, also retails essential books, DVDs and other materials for training and business. Membership is free for individuals and individual businesses/learning providers by registering on the website.

Are you an experienced stylist? Do you like to be challenged? Are you looking for the ultimate inspiration? Then we've got just what you're looking for.
We've teamed up with the lovely people at award-winning salon group Saks to giveaway a place on the Indulgence Course. Taught over five inspiring days by the highly acclaimed Saks Art Team, Indulgence focuses on the latest collection of advanced cut and colour techniques.
The course is split between demonstration and workshop, and the Art Team promise to provoke your creativity and show you how to use the cut and colour techniques back at your salon.
Not only will the lucky winner be able to choose from a five day course in London, starting July 21, or in Darlington, Country Durham, starting August 11; they'll also get the chance to give their verdict on the course in a reportback feature on HJi.
Entrants don't need to be talented writers, but they do need to have a passion for hairdressing and be happy to share their thoughts on the course with other industry professionals.
THIS COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED!

Students with a hunger to learn will want access to information at any time and from anywhere, and the internet offers this possibility.
Manufacturers, private academies, and salon operators are all starting to embrace online training as part of the educational mix.
Hairdressing-Training.com
One of the first salons to recognise the benefits of online learning was Jordan Burr in London. Owners Jo Jordan and Glen Burr founded the hairdressing-training.com website in 1999 and it has increased both in terms of its offering, and the number of users, and has continued to be a pioneering force in online training.
Says Glen: "Online training with hairdressing-training.com allows trainees and hairdressers easy access to learn at their own pace. It can be used in the workplace or at home.
"Learning online is an aid for trainees to gain knowledge and be able to work at their own pace.
"Hairdressing-training.com is available in more than 200 UK colleges of further education, is free of charge and is one of the first training websites to be made available on mobile phones, and soon as podcasts.
"The site is at the forefront of online education with the full support of the Learning Skills Council, offering new and creative technologies to our industry."
The site is due for a relaunch later this year, so watch this space.
ECH Head Training
Glasgow-based Ellen Conlin Hair and Beauty launched its HEAD Training scheme in 2006, and was the first salon in Scotland to have its training scheme accredited by the Scottish Qualification Authority.
According to salon co-owner, Ellen Conlin-Main, the HEAD training scheme is designed to give young members of staff as much training as possible without them having to attend an outside college, which ultimately saves the business time and money.
External verifiers can also access the online course from their home or office.
The course can be completed in 12 to 18 months and covers everything from team building and selling techniques to barbering and hair colouring. Students are constantly assessed throughout this time to ensure they maintain a high standard.
At the end of the course, the candidate will have created a portfolio of achievements, outlining their capabilities in detail as a reference point for the future.
Says Ellen: "Online training is definitely the way forward. It has proven to be valuable and we have a large number of determined and driven youngsters looking to join our salon because of the high-quality training available to them.
"Not only is the HEAD online training scheme a practical way to learn and make headway in hairdressing, it is helping our youngsters fulfil their career goals quickly and efficiently. It has made recruiting staff easier and reduced staff turnover."
myhairdressers.com
"Affordable, accessible and instant," is how the creative team behind Lee Stafford's www.myhairdressers.com describe the training available through its site - which pretty much sums up the appeal of online training in general.
Myhairdressers.com is a subscription-based web learning tool offering in-depth step-by-step instruction from experienced creative minds, including Lee Stafford and Stacey Broughton.
The site allows salon owners and staff access to up to 24 detailed step-by-steps, including classic, progressive and commercial work, and includes a cut of the month from Lee.
Alan d
Alan d comprises four London and Surrey-based salons and one of the largest privately owned training academies in the UK.
Two years ago it launched an online presence selling training DVDs, but is in the process of launching a dedicated training site.
Says Edward Hemmings, creative director at Alan d: "Our website regularly gets 100,000 hits per month and we realised we could do more with it. We investigated the possibility of breaking our collection down into downloadable segments available to hairdressers worldwide.
"The educational website will be launched imminently and will include regular new training films as well as practical NVQ-based programmes covering setting, perming and other techniques that many salon owners struggle to teach."
ask-schwarzkopf.com
Manufacturers are also realising the power of the web when it comes to education. Schwarzkopf Professional, for example, is now offering its training expertise online.
Registration is free and those signing up will have access to interactive learning tools, the latest Essential Looks collection and step by steps.
Comments Mark Todd, professional partner services manager and head of technical division for Schwarzkopf Professional: "ASK online will not replace the current support we offer all of our salons for in-house education, but will work in synergy, providing a 24-hour/365-days per year opportunity for information-led requests.
"Our web platform provides daily updates on all fields of creative and product-related subject matter, and will not only supplement the training we provide but also embed the relevance to salons of web-based media with no time restrictions."
As an increasing number of trainers recognise the power of web-based training, education will continue to become easier to access and, like the internet itself, the possibilities are limitless.
