Going the Extra Mile - HABB Bike Ride 2008

Posted by Alex
Dated: November 10, 2008 5:00 PM

Is there is no stopping top hairdressers sacrificing their bodies when it comes to supporting a good cause? Following HJi's report last week of Richard Ward raising £1000 for HABB by participating in the Great North Run, it seems they're at it again as Saturday marked the beginning of the 2008 HABB annual charity bike ride.

This overseas adventure sees over 15 hairdressers, who have raised a minimum of £1500 each, take part in a three-day cycle across the wild, mountainous terrain of north Lanzerote.

We at HJi have been in contact with three of the brave participants getting  a day-by-day update on their progress:

habb-bike-2.jpg            habb-bike-1.jpg

Day 1:

Hello UK!!

Well, to say today was challenging is an understatement!!

Up at 7am for breakfast, we hit the road at 8.45am in the end. The first 5km were on the road and it was fairly flat - easy we thought!!! The next 6km were off road, which were fine as well. However, to get off road, we had to turn a corner and came face to face with the wind. But we battled through. And we were fine, until we hit the next part.

Then came 9km up a steep hill (300m elevation) - THE WHOLE WAY UP!! First gear for most the whole way up. The views at the 9km mark were amazing across the island and were well worth the pain! Once at the top, the only way was down and this was the fun part! The descent was nearly as steep as the climb, but was immense fun with lots of switchbacks. We stopped in Haiza for a quick breather and then started the 12km climb to Mirador. This too was hard and very taxing, but we got there eventually! Then it was 3km down to lunch (easy!), before 12km down an undulating road along the coast to the caves. Quick stop, before starting over 20km back home - half up hill, the rest down hill!!

In total we covered 80km today and boy can we feel it! Now its off for hot baths before dinner and early to bed to start again tomorrow!!!

Day one - done!!!

Claire, Jonnie and Andrew.
(Jonnie Cool, Andrew Neilson & Claire Rowland from Wella Professionals)

P.s Its 24 degrees here and very sunny!!!

Dated: October 13, 2008 2:49 PM

Barrie-Stephen-Strictly.jpgThe team from Barrie Stephen's King Street salon proved they are a versatile bunch by taking to the dancefloor for a 'Strictly Cutting Edge Dance' challenge.

Inspired by BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, Barrie and his team were taught some ballroom steps and challenged to perform a cha-cha-cha routine live on BBC Radio Leicester in front of dance expert Bryan Allen, a regular judge at international and world ballroom championships.

Barrie, who partnered up with BBC Radio Leicester presenter Rupal Rajani for the challenge, said: "It was a much harder challenge than I thought it would be.

"I can see why the celebs on Strictly lose so much weight because the training requires a lot of effort and energy.

"The steps we learned were actually quite difficult, but it was a lot of fun. We must have impressed the judge too because we passed the challenge!"
