Belfast salon Rogue Hair was named the winner of this year's L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy after a night of drama, entertainment and excitement at Earls Court 2.
The Grand Final, hosted by former Blue Peter host and Strictly Come Dancing star, Gethin Jones, also saw the inaugural Mizani Catwalk Look Award - the first live afro hair competition of its kind.

The photographic winners of the Trend Vision Award 09 have been chosen after an intense afternoon of judging at the Wella Professionals World Studio, London.
Hairdressers from across the country had submitted their interpretations of this year's Trend Vision trends: Utopia, Intersexion, DeLush and Virtual Life and now it was down to the panel of industry experts to put their favourites through to the Regional Heats.

The six finalists of the inaugural Mizani Afro Catwalk Look have been chosen by a panel of leading industry names at the L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy judging.
They will now go forward to a live judging day at the L'Oréal International Academy on Friday, May 15.

After the drama and tension of the live hair competitions on the L'Oréal Professionnel Regional Tour, this year's Colour Trophy Grand Finalists have been selected.
At each of the live regional events, the finalists had 30 minutes to recreate their photographic entry in the glare of the spotlight and with an excited audience watching over them.

£6,000 software prize for Weymouth salon

A £6,000 salon management system which was won at Salon International by owners of hair and beauty salon Elegance in Weymouth, Dorset, has enabled the salon to kick off 2009 in style.
Co-owners Sonia Fraga and Judith Hansford entered Integrity Software's competition at the show in October 2008, and were picked at random from over 100 participants to win a prize that's set to transform the way they do business.

Nanomax is a prescriptive range of treatments for individual hair types that uses nanotechnology to restore and repair hair.

Purple Rain is a Color Challenge Hit

Purple Rain has always been something of a cult classic and the Prince song has now made its mark on hairdressing too. The 80s hit inspired Woking hairdresser Lucy Mitchell's winning hairstyle in this year's Paul Mitchell Color Challenge contest.
Lucy, from Shear Beauty, complemented an asymmetric bob with the season's must-have purple and violet hues to create an on-trend commercial look that wowed the judges and saw off stiff competition from over 400 hairdressers, who had entered the Color Challenge regional heats.

'Best standard ever' in the Color Challenge

The Paul Mitchell Color Challenge regional heats have got underway in Scotland and the north of England with more entries and a higher standard than ever before.
First up was the Scottish regional heat at the Dunblane Hydro in Stirling. Judges from regional salons, including The Hair Lounge, and Gary Moore, examined the competitors' mannequins looking for hairstyles with color that beautifully complemented the cut and finish.

Following the success of last year's Young Hairdresser of the Year competition, HJi has once again teamed up with the Clothes Show Live to find the Young Hairdresser of the Year 2008.
Young Hairdresser of the Year is a nationwide competition that aims to recognise up-and-coming British hairdressing talent, and reinforce the importance of fashion and hair fusing together.
The competition is open to hairdressers who are qualified to NVQ level 2 or equivalent, who are under the age of 30, and have a minimum of three but a maximum of five years' experience.

The semi-finalists for this year's Talentspotting competition have been announced after a tense day of judging the hundreds of moodboards that had come flooding into the L'Oréal Professionnel Academy.
This year, judges Errol Douglas MBE, Terry Calvert, from Clipso, and Brooks & Brooks' Sally Brooks had the additional task of judging moodboards from the exciting new Junior Art Team Category which encourages under-25's from the same salon to form a young artistic team.

When he took on the role of President of Alternative Hair, Anthony Mascolo, had the idea of running a photographic award to select a group of hairdressers to participate in a section of the Alternative Hair Show, entitled the Visionary Award Show.
In 2008, the Visionary Award is back offering hairdressers the exciting opportunity to show their work in front of a 5,500-strong international audience.
As this year's Alternative Hair show celebrates the 80th birthday of Alternative Hair Patron, Vidal Sassoon, entrants should submit one 10" x 12" image that has been inspired by the work of Vidal Sassoon.
From the entries received, 12 hairdressers will be invited to recreate their idea and appear on stage at the Alternative Hair Show on Sunday October, 19th, 2008.
The winner of the Visionary Award Competition 2008 will be announced at the Show on October 19th, and will also be invited to take part in next year's Alternative Hair Show.

My HJi Snapshot Competition - COMING SOON!

Since we launched My HJi we've really loved seeing the lovely images that you have uploaded.
So starting in July we're launching a new competition - My HJi Snapshot - to reward the images that really stand out from the crowd.
The competition begins on July 1, and we've teamed up with the lovely folk at TIGI to give the winner a kitbag packed full of goodies from their Hardcore range and an annual subscription to HJ.
What's this My HJi Snapshot competition all about?
It's a monthly photo competition to showcase the talents of our readers. You've got a month to upload the images that you are most proud of. At the end of the month we'll ask an esteemed judge to select the month's winner. In July, we're delighted to have Nick Irwin and the TIGI Creative Team on board to choose the winner.
What do I have to do?
Either take a picture of great hair or sort through your portfolio and find a style (or styles) that you are proud of. Then log in to My HJi - if you aren't already a member you'll need to sign up - and add your photo to the July photo gallery. You can add as many images as you like, but once you use an image once, you won't be able to use it again in a subsequent month.
Can my photo be of anything?
It can be anything from your portfolio - from a complex avant garde creation to a great blow dry. It doesn't need to have been shot professionally and it can even be on a block or mannequin - just as long as it is hair to be proud of we look forward to seeing it.
I'm still a student, can I enter?
Oh yes, My HJi Snapshot is open to anyone with who has created a great hair style they'd like to enter. July's prize is a TIGI Kitbag filled with goodies such as a hairdryer, curl stick and straightening irons from their Hardcore range - so it's the perfect prize if you're starting out in the industry!
So what's in it for me?
As our very first My HJi snapshot competition winner, you'll have your winning photo appear on the Community Page in HJ. You'll also walk away with a kit back complete with all the essential items a hairdresser needs and a year long subscription to HJ.

Hair Industry Competitions Explained: Talentspotting

What is Talentspotting?
Run by L'Oréal Professionnel, Talentspotting is a competition for hairdressers under the age of 25, where they're judged not only on their technical skills but also on their ability to bring an idea to life and present a show onstage. The idea behind it is to promote and nurture fresh young talent in the industry. There are two categories: Individual and Art Team.
What's the judging process?
In the first round, entrants submit a mood board, outlining the inspiration behind their ideas. Shortlisted contestants then go through to the semi-finals where they give live presentations onstage before a panel of judges and have the chance to work with a top industry mentor. At the Grand Final stage, the selected candidates present a live show and explain the ideas behind their work at a top London hotel.
Who are the judges?
Previous judges have included Trevor Sorbie, Errol Douglas, Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck and Andrew Barton, among many others.
What are the prizes?
The overall individual category winner gets a wealth of prizes including a photo shoot directed by a leading industry name, £1,000 worth of education courses at the L'Oréal International Academy and opportunities galore. The Art Team winners also get a photo shoot plus the chance to assist hair teams backstage at the L'Oréal Professional Colour Trophy Grand Final, and salon membership to the Fellowship for British Hairdressing.

Fancy attending an exciting and inspirational evening show featuring Sassoon Academy, D&J Ambrose and the Wella Professionals Trend Vision Award regional competitors?
Well this is your chance. The Wella Professionals Trend Vision Award regional finals kick off in Glasgow on May 26 before going on a whistlestop tour of the country taking in Manchester, Dudley and London and we've got a pair of tickets to each event to give away.

Schwarzkopf and Rae Palmer launch local graduate competition

Schwarzkopf and its ambassador, Rae Palmer, have launched the HABB Graduate competition for up-and-coming stylists who are educated to NVQ Level 2 in hairdressing.
The regional contest, for students at Fareham and Highbury Colleges, will culminate in a grand final on 16 June.
At the final, 15 students will battle it out to win a fantastic prize, including a year's apprenticeship at Rae Palmer Hairdressing in Southsea and a ticket to the British Hairdressing Awards and British Hairdressing Business Awards.
Other components of the top prize include an audition for the Young Artistic Team with Schwarzkopf and the opportunity to assist Rae on a photo shoot.
The aim of the competition is to unite local colleges with industry charity HABB, while providing training sessions for students and discovering new talent.
Judges for the live grand final are yet to be announced.

L'Oreal Professionnel Colour Trophy Deadline Looming

Time is running out for salons planning to enter L'Oreal Professionnel Colour Trophy 2008, as the dossier entry deadline is Monday March 3rd.
Each year, thousands of salons enter L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy each year, hoping to scoop the coveted award and an incredible prize package that includes a photo shoot in New York, advertorials in Vogue promoting the winning salons, and of course, the industry recognition.
Once all of the photographic entries have been received they will be narrowed down to 350 teams who will represent their salons at the Regional Finals.
But in order to get the chance to showcase their talent on the catwalk, the teams must make it through this tough first phase of judging.
"Competing in the L’Oréal Colour Trophy gives you the opportunity to realise your dreams and create next seasons award winning look", explains Charles Worthington. "Make sure you meet the entry deadline because it’s your time to shine!"
The L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy is the only event to showcase designers direct from the catwalks of London Fashion Week.
Each Regional Final will feature a stunning women’s fashion show from Central St Martins graduate Avsh Alom Gur with hair by the seanhanna Art Team, Haringtons Art Team, the F.A.M.E Team, and the Daniel Galvin Art Team.

Wella Trend Vision 2008 - The Trends

Wella Professionals has taken four key trends which represent the trends for 2008: Wonderland, Mineral Splendour, Factory Lyrics and Couture Allure.
Inspired by new and emerging directions, each of the four trends is free to be interpreted by the hairdressers unique personality in this year's Trend Vision Award Young Talent Category or the prestigious Trend Vision Award Colour Category.
Wonderland
Wonderland exudes a dreamlike nature where colours may be loud and energising with opacity for bold statements or translucent for sheer layers. There is an air of innocence coupled with an optimistic and contemporary romanticism. Oversized motifs and flower explosions give way to fluidity and a seemingly whimsical look. Hair is loose and deconstructed and may be long or elfin, child-like and flyaway - like cotton candy.
Shape & Form Wonderland where nature is enhanced by technology giving inspiration to an imaginary eco dream.
Hair lengths are grading from short to long loose and deconstructed lengths & textures. Pixie fringes fade to feather soft ends.
Colours range from harmonized base shades giving a canvas from which Honey golds, neutral browns and organic coppers merge into accents of apricots, rose and petal
hues.
Techniques "Smugging" partial focal points and fullheads.
Mineral Splendour
An understated new sophistication underlies a trend of subtle metallic colours: champagne, bronze and pewter, of shimmering, irridescent materials and unexpected treasures. A preciously simple look of fluid lines and pleated constructions. Hair may be medium or long length with head hugging, cocoon shapes. Warm metallic or cold mineral effects sum up the hair colour.
Shape & form: Mineral Splendour evokes understated sophistication, glowing radiance and organic forms with fluidity to overall shapes.
Hair lengths are medium with bevelled edges, c-curved lines movement can be expressed but sculptured not textured, with radiant silk finish shine.
Colours range from warm bronze browns, golden shimmering coppers, metallic silvers, mineral tones, cool agates.
Techniques: Interlocking curved angles, seemless edges. Tone on Tone Glazing.
Factory Lyrics
A mix of intelligent beauty and ultra feminine allure, Factory Lyrics has a confident striking, somewhat imperfect beauty. An androgenous look where femininity meets workwear, there is a sense of industrial reminiscence. Clothes are embellished yet functional in dusky dark colours and beautiful, rough materials. Hair takes on a contrast, not uniform shape. Cuts are graphic but deliberately broken with asymmetrical shapes defining the style. Complexions are perfectly creamy.Shape & Form: Factory Lyrics is the harmonious balance between beauty and function.
Hair lengths are short or long anti-balance is the focus, internal textures contrast one another. Finish is a combination of polished and raw.
Colours range from cool smokey hues, taupes, greys and silvers.
Techniques: Linear lines, vertical bands/rectangular offset "barcode" smudging applications to roots to soften contrasts of colours.
Couture Allure
Opulent styling captures the essence of Couture Allure. This is the new aesthetic chic, there is an audacity and charisma to this look. It is a retro-futuristic look verging on the completely abstract. Fashion focuses on redefining proportions and geometrical constructions. Hair is strong, bold and couture cut, it has a sleek, almost artificial appearance. Colour tones are pure with graphic blacks and whites and convention breaking colours.
Shape & Form: Couture Allure is the essence of bold expensive signature haircuts, billowing dome shapes with structured volume. All hair lengths can be expressed within this Trend with the focus always on controlled opulent highly polished styling with maximised shine.
Hair lengths strong, bold and couture cut, it has a sleek, almost artificial appearance.
Colours range from velvet violets, cherry reds, majestic blues, white, new blacks- rouge noir.
Techniques: Full head colours -"Bias" method incorporating shine lines of saturated tones to accentuate volume and dimension.

Entering industry awards takes commitment but the rewards can be immense for both the individual and the salon.
Whether it is a photographic competition or a written entry, entering – and hopefully winning – a competition can take a career to the next level and elevate a name into the spotlight overnight.
As for the salon, or indeed the salon group, there are multiple benefits of entering competitions, including:
