The whole point of a fashion revival is that it has a cool, up-to-date edge.
So how can you ensure you're one step ahead of fashion, and what are the latest colour trends you should be introducing to your clients?

Celebs have been popping up at salons across the UK, and at HJi we're usually the first to hear about them!
Chart-topping popster Pixie Lott chose reigning HJ's British Hairdresser of the Year, Akin Konizi and award-winning colourist Christel Lundqvist at the hob salon in Camden Town, London to give her a hair make-over. The pair created a versatile look for the star so she can switch between the hippy chic or messier indi styles she's famous for.

Another famous blonde, Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt, recently enjoyed a styling session at London salon, Webster Whiteman before hitting the red carpet for an awards ceremony. The Doll (pictured here with salon owners Lisa Whiteman and Darren Webster) opeted for a side-swept style with fringe.

Fifty years ago a young Daniel Galvin was starting his career with one mission on his mind: to make hair colour as popular as hair cuts.
Working at the renowned Leonard salon in London, his eye for creating stunning and visual colour collections soon saw his work splashed across the pages of fashion bible, Vogue - and the rest as they say is history.
"Colourists were seen as the underdog and I always wanted us to be recognised as much for the work we did as cutters," he explains.
Now, colour is one of the most popular services and colourists are recognised in their own rights, with awards dedicated to the speciality.
So, half a decade on, what does the future hold for Daniel? He's as passionate today about raising the standard of colour as he was when he started, and investing in the future is top of his list.
"You are as old as you feel - age isn't important apart from when you are born and when you die. Age is irrelevant - you can do anything you set your mind to.
"I have a fantastic team at my London salon and it's important I offer them as many opportunities as I can so they can grow and develop as they are the future of the business."
These are some of the images from his hairdressing career and the memories they evoke.

Is red tape really such a problem that salon owners get into such a state of confusion, they accidentally pay employees the wrong wage, ask HJ News Editor Matthew Batham?
According to the National Hairdressers' Federation, over-complexity of legislation surrounding the national minimum wage was likely to be the reason behind any salons underpaying - not flagrant breach of the law.
The National Hairdressers' Federation has warned the UK government to exercise "great care" when deciding whether to implement a Scottish Affairs Committee recommendation to name and shame firms that breach national minimum wage (NMW) legislation north of the border. The Scottish Affairs Committee has recommended the government expose employers even where non-compliance has been averted.
Eileen Lawson, NHF secretary general, said a hairdressing salon was only as good as its reputation, so any decision on naming and shaming a business where non-compliance resulted from accidental breach would be hugely damaging. "Accidental breach is what it says on the tin, and the emphasis should be on education not punishment," she said.
Lawson said the NHF was unaware of any of its own members incurring a penalty for non-compliance although several had difficulty interpreting the law and had asked for advice.
Scrap Business Rates
The NMW isn't the only legislation under scrutiny. One salon owner, so disgruntled at the size of the business rates bill for her new Suffolk business has started a petition. Paula Mason, of Lawrence Paul Salons is asking the government to make new businesses exempt from business rates for the first 12 months of trading.
You can register your support at the number 10 Downing Street website - and start your own petition against whatever red tape is getting your goat.
Bright Side to Business
Looking on the bright side, despite the red tape burden - and the recession - an increasing number of small businesses are optimistic about the future. Three quarters of small businesses believe the economy will see an upturn in 2010, according to research from BT Business, with 35% predicting an improvement by January 2010.

That represents a huge potential market for your salon, so if do not you have the knowledge and experience to work with Asian hair you could be missing an opportunity.
Mark Creed and the team at Philosophy Hairdressing in Oxford have visited India on a number of occasions in the last four years in conjunction with L'Oréal Professionnel.
In that time, Mark has developed an affinity with the hairdressing industry in India and has a clear understanding of how to get the best results with Indian hair types. So we asked him and his colleagues at Philosophy to share their advice for cutting, colouring and styling Indian and Asian hair.
