The 40s, 50s and, most evidently, the 80s are the big influences when it comes to the hair trends set to make their way from the catwalk to the high street this autumn/winter.
The key hair trends making a return from yesteryear include old school glamour, texture, hairstyles tailored to suit the face and, when it comes to volume it's the bigger the better.
"Hair is a reaction to the times we're living in. It's strong, positive and forceful - it's empowering to women," explains Redken creative director Guido.
Malcolm Edwards for L'Oreal Professionnel agrees. "The strongest styles this season are from the wilder, more adventurous camp. Fashion is replicating the 80s. An era when tight times and inventive British creativity went hand in hand".
So what else can you expect your clients to be asking for in the months ahead? These are the key hair trends for autumn/winter 2009.

High-tempo hair shows, inspiring business and creative seminars and, of course, a fantastic party filled an action-packed agenda when hairdressers from across the globe congregated in Las Vegas for the Paul Mitchell Gathering.
And while the extensive education programme - that consisted of creative cutting and colour workshops, where delegates were taught how to recreate Paul Mitchell's latest collection: Six Figures; and business seminars where delegates were given the tools to get the best out of their salons in this tough economic climate - gave hairdressers and salon owners plenty to think about, it was the spectacular shows at the beginning and end of the Gathering that got everyone talking.

With the changing of the season just round the corner there's no better time than now to offer your clients a brand new on-trend hair colour.

According to Richard Ward from Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa, London, colour is opulent and rich this season. "Expensive looking hair colour, which gives intense yet natural coverage with an organic, purity of tone will be bang on trend.
"Women have ditched their credit crunch disasters and appreciate the luxury of supremely applied colour - they won't compromise ansd now want even more superior results, " he says.
So what else will clients be asking for? Here's some of the key hair colour trends as seen in editorial coverage and how they are being interpreted by celebrity fashionistas.

British Hairdresser of the Year nominee Phil Smith has been hairdressing for 25 years and maintains the same passion he has always had.
Phil originally wanted to be a fantastic salon-based hairdresser but his ambition and drive soon took over and now he is a successful businessman with eight salons and a huge collection of business and creative accolades under his belt.
"To me hairdressing is about making people look and feel better about themselves," he says. "At the end of the day I am a hairdresser and it's important never to forget that. I still have a regular column in the salon - how can you motivate your team if you don't practice what you preach?"
We asked Phil to talk us through his hairdressing career and these are the images that define his hairdressing achievements to date.

As temperatures start to cool down, so will hair colour as we head into the autumn/winter season, with cooler, more sophisticated brunettes and blondes.
"Small adjustments can help women update their look from season to season," says Tracey Cunningham, celebrity colourist at the Byron + Tracey Salon and Redken's creative consultant for colour. "When summer comes to a close, cool your client's shades down - move towards blue or violet, such as platinum blondes, ash browns and plum reds."
So what should the three main colour types be looking for this autumn/winter? Here is a selection of the key looks for blondes, brunettes and redheads.

HJ News Editor, Matthew Batham, believes hairdressing is an industry that will ride the recession with style. I mentioned in my last comment what a resiliant bunch hairdressers are, and this week I have more evidence to support this claim. While so many industries have bemoaned their lot during the current economic climate, I'm yet to speak to a hairdresser who doesn't have something positive to say

I've spent time ever day for the last few weeks working on getting ready for my new salon opening in November.
At the moment we're focusing on strategies - developing procedures and manuals that will ensure things are done the Barton way.
I'm very excited to have appointed my group technical director, Andrew Blackadder - know in the industry as AJ.
AJ spent about 10 years working with the Toni & Guy art team, but before that he worked with me as my junior in Australia. Andrew became known as AJ when he was working for me. We already had an Andrew working in the salon so he opted to be called AJ, as in Andrew's junior. It's great that we're going to be working together again.
I also have Tracey Gallagher joining me as group creative director.
It's great to be working with people that I know personally and professionally, that I can trust in these very senior positions.
I've also been busy interviewing the first phase of recruits. We've been inundated with candidates - and we only advertised in HJ and on HJi! So far we've seen 130 people and they have all been of an amazing calibre. It's going to be difficult pick the 15 we need for phase one of the recruitment process.
So far the whole process has been fairly stress-free. It's all been very well organised with the help of my fantastic management team. My experience is with larger salon groups, so I've been opening salons for years.
This week I've also spent two days shooting my collection for British - this year they are going to be really different. It's been very exciting as it has coincided with my departure from Saks so I've had full creative control.
