L'Oreal Professionnel's Colour Trophy Finalists Chosen

Posted by

Posted by Ruth
Dated: March 4, 2009 2:09 PM

Dated: March 4, 2009 2:09 PM

A panel of prestigious judges chose the finalists in the first round of the L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy last week. So what did they think - and what advice have they got for the finalists?

Charles-Worthington_09-Doss.jpg"The standard of work just gets better and better every year. We've seen sharper cuts, forward thinking ideas and more consideration for the overall look. The L'Oréal Professionnel Men's Image Award is stronger than ever. The images have been loaded with style; they're edgy and spontaneous with more long hair we've seen in the past."
Charles Worthington, London

Trevor-Sorbie_09-Dossier-Ju.jpg"I'm looking for an image that jumps out and makes me stop in my tracks. A successful photographic entry will show consideration towards every element - cut, colour, make-up, clothes styling and the model. When they all come together you see real professionalism and winning potential. Working under pressure is the ultimate challenge and it takes a special kind of hairdresser to make it through to the grand final."
Trevor Sorbie, London

"I've been bowled over by the entries this year. I've been really impressed by the strong colour work in every region. I'm looking for something that would transfer from behind the lens to the model. A winning image needs to combine fashion and commercial appeal, making it truly aspirational for clients."
Alan Edwards, Glasgow

Rob-Eaton_09-Dossier_JBradl.jpg"In the L'Oréal Professionnel Men's Image category competitors are really getting to grips with the idea of producing a strong, masculine look that is subtle and understated in its overall style. For me, the Young Colourist Award is the most exciting category of the competition as it showcases young talent - the future of British hairdressing."
Robert Eaton, Russell Eaton, Barnsley

Ruth-Hunsley_09-Dossier_JBr.jpg"The Young Colourist Award is such an exciting category, showcasing the next generation of young colourists. Entrants had taken into account the overall look, producing young, fresh and commercial work. Now the finalists will take part in a live final where the judges will be able to see their techniques in action, hear more about their inspiration and understand their vision."
Ruth Hunsley, HJ's deputy editor

Sean-Dawson_09-Dossier_JBra.jpg

"My tip for regional finalist's is that if you're working to a tight budget, spend as much as you can on your model. An amazing model will always sell your image so this is a great investment. There's an incredible prize on offer at the end of this journey and winning is the stepping stone to a huge career."
Sean Dawson, hob salons, London

Annie-Humphries_09-Dossier-.jpg
"The L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy benefits the individual and the salon in so many ways. It generates fantastic media coverage and ensures the whole team pulls together to inspire ideas. Entering is really exciting and motivating for the salon and will lift the atmosphere to dizzying heights."
Annie Humphreys

Advanced Hair Colour Qualifications Explained

Dated: March 10, 2009 4:48 PM

Dated: March 10, 2009 4:48 PM

SP-Repair-treatment.jpgAdvanced hair colour training qualifications are rapidly growing in popularity. They are an effective way to show that your staff have the highest level of expertise and can help boost the salon's profits.

"From a financial point of view, we have increased Wella Professionals Master Colour Expert prices by 20% to see our colourists that have the qualification," explains Darren Messias, creative director at Keith Hall Hairdressing, Midlands

"We have also seen a significant increase in new and colour-shy clients who are prepared to pay extra for time with the crème de la crème of colourists," he says.

As colour expert courses are of an advanced nature, they usually require five to seven years' previous experience and are spread over a period of three to six months. But they are well worth the effort according to these graduates.
