It has been quite a year for Jim Shaw - after winning Men's Hairdresser of the Year 2007 he has followed up his success by opening essensuals MEN salon
The brand new salon in Billericay, Essex, is the first essensuals salon of its kind, offering a full grooming service and the 'ultimate male salon experience'.
The salon launched with a tour followed by a night of partying and celebrating with 500 members of Jim's family, friends, clients and colleagues at the Sugar Hut in nearby Brentwood.
Guest of honor was Christian Mascolo, co-founder/Managing Director of essensuals and Jim's partner in essensuals MEN.
Jim says: "We wanted to create a modern and relaxed environment for the male client who is style conscious and looking for more than a quick trim because we know it is not only women who like to be pampered!
"The combination of our amazing team, fantastic looking salon and a unique salon concept makes us the ultimate stop for the modern day man. The clients and locals are as excited about the launch as we are!"

Martine McCutcheon has come a long way since the days when she played Tiffany, the tart with a heart behind the bar in Eastenders' Queen Vic. Since then, she's been a star on the stage and even hooked up with the Prime Minister in the blockbuster hit Love Actually.
All the while, the media have had an ongoing too thin/too big debate about her curvy figure but what they seem to have overlooked is that she's matured into something of a celebrity hair style icon.

Magazines scream of glossy, healthy-looking hair, but once the summer arrives the reality is dryness, colour fade and brittle locks.

Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck was born into the Toni & Guy empire so you could argue that hairdressing has always been in her blood.
Being surrounded by such a creative and dynamic family, it was inevitable that hairdressing would have a profound effect on Sacha, and despite studying fashion and design, hairdressing had already taken its grip.
"I found hairdressing very easy and enjoyed it. I was a natural. I was very privileged to be joining the family business - and learning from the best in the world - and I still enjoy what I do more than 20 years later. " she says.
"As global creative director for Toni & Guy, essensuals and label.m, I don't see myself as successful - I am so critical of myself and always strive to be better. However, I am very lucky to have a career I love," she adds.
Here, Sacha shares some of the images that have defined her career.

Deborah Harry, aka Blondie
"Blondie was the first person to use her hair to define the name, look and vibe of a band. Look at Pink and how she has done the same too. In my eyes, Blondie was the first female music artist who had everything.
"She was fashion conscious - her hair colour was loud but launched a look that many women of the time then wore.
"Her style was always bleached blonde but she had so many great variations with lengths, cuts and shapes. Her most iconic must be the style that she wore in the video Heart of Glass - a voluminous bob - which was simple, irresistible and made her look feminine and cute.
"I also like the blunt fringe that Deborah wore with long hair at the back, a sort of Cleopatra look. With her platinum hue, the blunt fringe and long hair was so rock and roll. Kate Moss has worn this look several times.
"There are mixed feelings about Deborah and her current look, but with the re-release of her first album I think people will look back at her styles and think 'yes, she got it right.'"

Among all the beautiful hairstyles that graced the stage at the L'Oreal Professionnel Colour Trophy Grand Final, the winners Mack Hairdressing and Men's Award winners Trevor Sorbie Brighton had one major thing in common: they really stood out from the crowd.
While the women's category was dominated by Agyness Deyn-inspired crops and funky fringes; brunettes were the order of the day in the Men's Image Award. That is with the exception of the winners who'd opted for on-trend curls and a pure blonde boys cut.
They both admit that they were well aware that they were taking a gamble by going against the norm, but both felt it was a risk worth taking to create a look that they really believed in.

Staff at Essensuals, Billericay, put away their scissors and hairdryers for an evening of pure glamour in aid of the Toni & Guy charitable foundation.
Held at the stunning Stockbrook Manor, Billericay, the charity ball took some nine months planning by salon owner Jim Shaw, the Men's Hairdresser of the Year, and his right-hand woman Leanne Harris.
But the guests, including loyal clients and local businesses, who enjoyed a champagne reception, a four-course meal, scrumptious goodie bags and a gigantic chocolate fountain would agree that it was well worth the effort.
Magicians, singers, pianists and casino tables kept guests entertained throughout the night, while auctions and a fantastic raffle helped to raise over £5,000 for the charity.
Leanne said: "Once again, we were overwhelmed with the support from local businesses and clients, from providing flowers to donating prizes and purchasing tickets to attend.
"After the success and fun we had last year, we were determined to do it all again after seeing what a difference a new ward would make to the sick children at Kings College Hospital."

Ramsay and Johnson art team members, Neville Ramsay, Paul Johnson, Sara Sumner and Angey Rain, put on a stunning show to present Revlon Professional's exciting new NEO Collection, at Leeds Metropoliton University.
With signature features of sharp, on-trend disconnected bobs offset by softened interiors and long disconnected cuts with visor inspired fringes the NEO Collection has a strong commercial feel, which proved a massive hit with the 300-strong audience.
The collection was enhanced by an array of dramatic colours including bold coppers, inky blacks, cinnamon and icy blonde shades that showcased Revlon Professional's conditioning colours and offered ideas that could easily be translated to the salon.
The inspirational night concluded with a fast paced Grand Finale, with the Ramsay and Johnson team presenting dramatically masked models with oversized wigs giving a quirky ending to a superb event.

When it comes to celebrity status, the Big Brother 'stars' certainly demand plenty of column inches; but when it comes to celebrity style they're not quite so adept.
If they're not showing a little more flesh than we need to see, there's too much bling or another fashion faux pas raising eyebrows.
And as for the hair... well, there are more hair extensions than in the family enclosure at an England match!
We asked a few leading hairdressers to cast their eye over some of the housemates who have managed to survive the celebrity status test of time; and it's fair to say there weren't too many complimentary comments going round.
Fortunately, they did have plenty of suggestions for how their hair styles could be improved, so if you're listening Chantelle and Co...

Jamie Stevens, art director at Errol Douglas, London recently gave Britain's favourite makeover guru a makeover all of his own.
Gok Wan came into the Errol Douglas salon for a complete re-style and is now sporting a short-sided, longer on top look fit for a fashionista.
"Gok saw one of the images I'd done for a men's shoot and loved it," says Jamie. I took his extensions out and gave him a restyle previously, and he was ready for a complete new look for the new season this time round.
"We went for the short, hard military look - partings are changing to be harder and more regimented and have been big on the catwalks.
This is a great men's style for autumn through winter 2008."

How do you get dozens of top hairdressers to descend on the leafy town of Epsom - ask them to be judges of the HJ British Hairdressing Awards!
It was a who's who of British hairdressing at the venue for the judging of the most prestigious awards in the industry and the atmosphere was church-like as judges gave their full attention to the entries displayed over two floors.
It's obvious from the silence and the intensity with which the judges studied the entries, that they were aware of the importance of the awards to every entrant.
Speaking to HJi after the judging, all members of the panel agreed that the HJ British Hairdressing Awards are instrumental to taking hairdressing forward, and that a win or even an appearance in the shortlist can rocket-launch a career.
Independent auditors were on hand to calculate the finalists who will go forward to the second round of judging.

Twenty-five fashion graduates showcased their edgy collections, with a wide range of complementary hairstyles to match.
Hensmans' hairstylists were working with the students months ahead of the show in order to create the right looks for their fresh new outlook on the fashion world.
Not only were the hair creations modelled around the outfits, but the students were also given the challenge to create another collection inspired by the Spring Summer Essential Looks Collection to open the show.

What is Habia?
Habia stands for Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Authority and is the government-approved standards setting body for hair, beauty, nails, spa therapy, barbering and Afro hairdressing. It creates the standards that form the basis of all qualifications including NVQs, SVQs, apprenticeships, diplomas and foundation degrees. It also sets industry codes of practice.
What can it offer hairdressers?
Habia, based in Doncaster, Yorkshire, is a central point of contact for information, offering guidance on education, training, careers, business development, legislation, and salon safety. It works to raise the standards of training and education for hair, and beauty, nails, spa therapy, barbering and African type hair hairdressing.
Who is it aimed at?
Habia is primarily the voice to government of employers in the whole hair, beauty, spa and nails sector on education and skills issues and how these affect business performance. Whether you are an employer, employee or trainee, Habia can offer advice on a wide range of issues. Employers can find the latest legislation and health and safety updates, while trainees can find colleges and academies to suit their needs.
Is it an independent organisation or does it work in conjunction with anyone else?
Habia is an independent, not for profit organisation recognised by Government. It is not a trade association. Habia works with all industry organisations, individual employers, learning providers, awarding bodies, and Government and its agencies across the UK. Habia works closely with the awarding body VTCT - Vocational Training Charitable Trust in raising standards, promoting qualifications and creating new education programmes and training resources.
Does this just apply to the UK or overseas as well?
British hairdressing is held in high esteem around the world and for the past 15 years Habia has worked with partners around the world to achieve recognition for UK standards and promote good practice. This involves reciprocity agreements, so that holders of UK qualifications do not need to re-qualify to work in that nation, and licensing arrangements, where that nation wants to use the UK standards in their qualifications. The organisation can bring companies together for training and business, arrange visas and promotes the work of UK hairdressers across the globe.
Does it cost anything to use the service?
Its website, www.habia.org, is free to use and as well as offering the latest news and advice, also retails essential books, DVDs and other materials for training and business. Membership is free for individuals and individual businesses/learning providers by registering on the website.
How can Habia be contacted?
Call 0845 2 306080 or email info@habia.org.
