Errol Douglas Supports Homeless Charity

Posted by Kate
Dated: June 2, 2008 3:18 PM

Errol-centrepoint.-jpg.jpg
Three-times Afro Hairdresser of the Year Errol Douglas MBE has donated his services to a group of less fortunate clients by taking part in a Centrepoint project to give young women a life makeover.

Errol cut and styled the hair of 10 young women from Centrepoint's youth homelessness services as part of the makeover with Elizabeth Arden cosmetics.

They also received an inspirational 'mind makeover' designed by expert business consultant and life coach, Sharron Lowe, to encourage them to focus on personal aspirations, action planning and positive thinking.

Errol says, "This is the third year I've been involved with the project and it's great to see these young women feeling happy and confident about themselves.

"People become homeless for many reasons and it's heartbreaking to hear some of their stories. To give them 100% 'me' time is really rewarding and fulfilling for me as a hairdresser.

"They were all beautiful, and deserved to feel that way as well."

One of the participants, Saron, from Centrepoint's Salter's City Foyer, London, said:  "I absolutely loved it! Both makeovers really gave us girls the confidence to come out of our shells.

"We all learned so much and it has inspired me, in spite of my circumstances now, to write down my goals for the future and be positive and confident and start every day with a smile!"

Lilly-Allen-pink.jpg
It only seems two minutes ago that we were saying 'Oh my God, I can't believe it, Lily Allen has gone blonde' and now the lovely lady has only gone and changed her colour again.

But has she opted for a return to her chocolate roots, a striking copper or a different shade of blonde? Oh no, that's not for the Smile singer. She's opted for bubblegum pink!

When we asked the hairdressing fraternity what they made of Lily's new colour, we were rather expecting raised eyebrows and universal horror, but it turns out you're rather fond of the quirky look.

Dated: June 6, 2008 10:36 AM

Hairdressers are still among the happiest workers in the UK, according to the fifth City and Guild Happiness Index - although beauty therapists did knock them off the top spot this year.

There's still plenty for hairdressers to smile about, however, insists City and Guilds. Hairdressers have an average happiness level of more than eight out of 10, with one in three rating themselves as 100 per cent happy. Nearly half of the UK's hairdressers are happier than they were a year ago and 80 per cent would recommend the profession to a friend.

As the undisputed Queen of Pop, Madonna has been re-inventing herself for as long as most of us can remember.

From blonde to dark and back to blonde again; from long to short and all the lengths in between: you name it Madonna has done it.

Now, as her half century approaches, she's only gone and done it again. This time she has said goodbye to the trashier looks of yesteryear and opted for a more mature, glamorous look that screams 'yummy mummy'.

An Icon Answers: Phil Smith

Posted by

Posted by Kate
Dated: June 6, 2008 3:20 PM

Dated: June 6, 2008 3:20 PM

Colin McAndrew from Medusa Hairdressing in Edinburgh puts give questions to his hairdressing icon,  Phil Smith.

Phil-Smith2.jpg

You have so much going on - salons, awards, running the business and marathons. How do you achieve the perfect balance?
There isn't an ideal balance. For me, it is important to prioritise and deal with situations as they arise. It is good to forward plan, but you also need to be spontaneous, otherwise you might miss the moment.
I enjoy spending time in my salons with the team and clients, and spending time at home with my wife and children, so every week I make sure I have quality time with them all. Running three marathons is something I always wanted to do before I turned 40, so I use the training time to reflect on the business and help create a better balance.

What advice would you give to someone in my position who is starting out managing a three-salon group?
The jump from creative director to salon owner is never easy, and as you have taken on three salons at once it is going to be tricky. But never give up. There will be tough times - there always are in life, but use your motivation and love for the industry to keep fighting through. The most important asset to you now is your team, so spend time ensuring they understand, appreciate and respect your business. Stay motivated and strive to be the best.

What business challenges are you currently facing?
I have found a rise in the housing market has had an effect on the salon business. It is now harder for young, ambitious people to make that first step in securing a property, so they are moving away from the cities to rural locations where prices are more affordable.

Where does your true love lie, in creating beautiful collections or winning awards for your business acumen?
My true love lies with being successful, in both business and creative aspects of the industry. However, my HJ Hall of Fame award for Wales and South West Hairdresser of the Year is my most treasured possession, so maybe my love lies with being creative? The business needs to be going well in order to pursue the creative side, so achieving this balance is very important.

With so many salons on different levels for clients to choose from, what do you think a good salon has to offer to succeed?
Fundamentally, there are three qualities a salon needs to succeed - good coffee, good chat and a great haircut. Good conversation comes from brilliant people who have been trained to the highest degree in consultations and client relations, and work in an environment they are happy and proud of. Great haircuts come from those with continuous training that keeps them constantly updated. And, a good cup of coffee - well, you're on your own there!

west row.JPG

It was all hands on deck for West Row Hairdressing recently as the seven Yorkshire salons sent a team of 10, the West Rowers, to compete in the Dragon Boat Race to raise money for Martin House Children's Hospice.

The team took to the water dressed as Amy Winehouse - complete with impeccably coiffed beehive wigs. Salon owner Marc Westerman said: "There were some very serious rowers but we had a really good time. We all dressed as Amy Winehouse and sang Rehab as we rowed down the river. We raised 1,350 pounds on the day, a good start towards the 25,000 pounds we aim to donate over the coming year for this extremely worthy cause."

Dated: June 6, 2008 5:15 PM

I've only been a finalist in a few competitions, and although I appreciated how finalists must feel, I've never had the butterflies or nervous wait for results. Until now. My husband Gary is a finalist with his band, The Steve Boyce band, on Virgin Radio, with the prize to support Eric Clapton at Hyde Park. We find out the result on Monday morning -- and I don't think I can bear it! The adrenaline rushes, the butterflies, the nerves, the highs and the lows -- I certainly now know how finalists for HJs British Hairdressing Awards feel! The anticipation is enormous, and while winning would be amazing, Gary has had the time of his life. I just hope it doesn't end!! Ruth @HJi x

trevorimage.jpg
Reinventing clients' appearances and helping to boost their self-esteem is one of the many aspects that makes hairdressing one of the most rewarding career choices.

Trevor Sorbie MBE has taken that aspect of his business to another level by creating 'My New Hair', a wig personalisation service for clients suffering from illnesses such as cancer and alopecia.

'My New Hair' came about after Trevor helped a family member who was undergoing treatment for cancer.  He says: "Coping with illness is very traumatic and to have the added stress of hair loss can be devastating.

"Hairdressers are very involved with their clients'image and providing this service is an additional way to enrich a client's life during this sensitive time."

Baby's All Grown Up on the Celebrity Hair-o-Meter

Dated: June 10, 2008 3:53 PM

From Lily Allen's Crayola-bright colour to Prince William's cut getting the royal seal of disapproval - here's HJi's latest round up of which celebs are looking hot or not in the hair style stakes...

So do you agree with our choices or are you loving/loathing someone else's celebrity hair? Have your say on My HJi.

thermo2.gif

Hot Pink...
Lily Allen
She grabbed headlines galore with this show-stopping fuchsia makeover and, judging from the response we've had from you lot, you're loving Lily's bold new look.
Lily-Allen.jpg
Emma Bunton
Baby Spice unveiled her blonde bob at the recent Glamour Awards bash and we think it looks fab. This swingy, flicky shape is spot-on for summer, and the gorgeous golden hue is hot with a tan.
Emma-Bunton.jpg
Mark Ronson
Music producer to the stars Mark works geek-chic style, with this side-swept, boyish cut. And check out the frilly shirt! This is a man not afraid to make a fashion statement.
Mark-Ronson.jpg
Prince William
Not exactly flying the flag for male grooming, Wills' barnet looks decidedly unkempt, and with a fleet of footmen at his disposal, surely he can do better than this mess?
Prince-William.jpg
Marcia Cross
Thank goodness this is a wig and the flame-haired Desperate Housewife hasn't swapped her trademark red locks for this dreary, dull cut and colour permanently.
Marcia-Cross.jpg
Beth Ditto
All credit to The Gossip frontwoman for taking a risk fashion-wise - and she's hailed by many as quite a style icon. But we think this quirky top-knot is just plain wrong.

Think of sushi and most of us think yum (or yuck, depending on our pallet!). Not Angelo Seminara. The British Hairdrsser of the Year saw sushi and thought I want to create that...in hair.

So when HJ asked him to create an exclusive fashion collection for the magazine, he knew just what he wanted to achieve.

"I had an idea a long time ago to play with colours to do something that looks almost like sweets, almost like the inside of a sushi roll.

"In the studio, I tried to produce this."

With England's football heroes more caught up in wedding fever than football fever this summer, it might have escaped your attention that Euro 2008 is in full swing.

But if the idea of 22 men chasing a ball around a pitch doesn't float your boat, it's still worth standing up and taking notice because more and more men are turning to the sports arena for their style inspiration.

The great news is that Kevin Keegan-style perms and handlebar moustaches have been consigned to the days when England were still any good; the bad news is that there's still a fair few hair horrors on display.

We asked British Hairdressing Awards 2007/08 Men's Hairdresser of the Year Jim Shaw, salon director of Essensuals, Billericay, to put some of football's icons hair styles under the microscope.

Talentspotting-2008.jpg

What is Talentspotting?
Run by L'Oréal Professionnel, Talentspotting is a competition for hairdressers under the age of 25, where they're judged not only on their technical skills but also on their ability to bring an idea to life and present a show onstage. The idea behind it is to promote and nurture fresh young talent in the industry. There are two categories: Individual and Art Team.

What's the judging process?
In the first round, entrants submit a mood board, outlining the inspiration behind their ideas. Shortlisted contestants then go through to the semi-finals where they give live presentations onstage before a panel of judges and have the chance to work with a top industry mentor. At the Grand Final stage, the selected candidates present a live show and explain the ideas behind their work at a top London hotel.

Who are the judges?
Previous judges have included Trevor Sorbie, Errol Douglas, Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck and Andrew Barton, among many others.

What are the prizes?
The overall individual category winner gets a wealth of prizes including a photo shoot directed by a leading industry name, £1,000 worth of education courses at the L'Oréal International Academy and opportunities galore. The Art Team winners also get a photo shoot plus the chance to assist hair teams backstage at the L'Oréal Professional Colour Trophy Grand Final, and salon membership to the Fellowship for British Hairdressing.

After enjoying a lovely evening at the L'Oreal Professionnel Colour Trophy at London's Earls Court, I headed off to Warsaw, to do a show at the L'Oreal Professionnel Colour Trophy in Poland.

Without our third wheel, Alison, who is away on maternity leave, Tracey Gallagher and I put together a concept where we worked live on stage for a full 40 minutes.

The idea was to really wow the crowd with a transformation show and it certainly achieved our aim: we got a standing ovation from the 2,000 hairdressers at the National Opera House.

Not only will the lucky winner be able to choose from a five day course in London, starting July 21, or in Darlington, Country Durham, starting August 11; they'll  also get the chance to give their verdict on the course in a reportback feature on HJi.

Entrants don't need to be talented writers, but they do need to have a passion for hairdressing and be happy to share their thoughts on the course with other industry professionals.

THIS COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED!

PM-Hair-camp.jpg
Over 1,000 stylists from London to Glasgow have taken part in a style adventure at Paul Mitchell's Spotlight Hair Camps.

Taking place at seven venues across the country, the Paul Mitchell Platform Artist Club (PAC) and Art Team put on inspiring workshops and demonstrations to update delegates' cutting techniques and expand their creative knowledge.

First, PAC took to the stage conducting 'hair-up' workshops to help stylists meet the increasing client demand for new ways to style their hair.

This was followed by demonstrative cuts from Angus Mitchell's Eclipse Collection including the 'Crystal' and 'Lyndsey'. Inspired by the luminous circular shape and eclipsing effect of the sun, the commercial viability of the cuts makes them easy for stylists to adapt in the salon.

Paul Mitchell® PAC member Carlo Cardinale said: "This year's Spotlight Hair Camps were a phenomenal series of events.

"The Paul Mitchell® PAC and Art Team had a great synergy that fused through to the delegates and created an electricl atmosphere."

Celebrity Blondes From Icy to Strawberry

Dated: June 19, 2008 12:57 PM

Blonde hair is as intrinsically linked with summer as strawberries and cream; sea and sand; picnics in the parks; and Pimms and lemonade.

But when it comes to chosing the right summer shade, the modern client isn't content with picking a look for the season and sticking with it. She's looking for a shade that reflects changes in her needs and even her mood.

In fact, a recent survey by Schwarzkopf Professional found that 81per cent of blondes go into the salon wanting to update and refresh their look rather than just maintain the same colour and style.

But with blonde hair shades ranging from icy to strawberry, it goes with out saying that not every shade is suitable for every client and that you have to match the right shade to the right skin tone.

We caught up with Schwarzkopf 'Blonde Expert' Charlie Taylor, from Charlie Taylor Hair, Health and Beauty, to look at four of the key blonde shades celebs are wearing this season and learn which clients the look can best be recreated on.

HJi takes a look at the celebs who've been snapped and papped looking perfectly coiffed or downright drab in the past two weeks.

But what do you think? Does Diaz deserve our dressing down? Does Messing look simply, well, a mess? Join the celebrity hair debate on the My HJi hairdressing forums.

Hot, hot, hot...
Debra Messing
The Will & Grace star has swapped her red waves for this deeply dark shade - and we think it's given her an instant glam-over.
Debra-Messing.jpg
Jada Pinkett-Smith
Mrs Will Smith (lucky lady) has gone all glamorous on us, trading her cute cropped locks for this slinky, sexed-up style.
Jada-Pinkett-Smith.jpg
Nicole Richie
New mum Nicole carries off the 'haven't really tried' look to perfection with this effortless updo and delicately dishevelled strands.
Nicole-Richie.jpg
Cameron Diaz
Ok, so Cameron never looks bad, but her usual surfer-girl style is so much cooler than this straight hair and Sloaney pashmina combo.
Cameron-Diaz.jpg
Meg Ryan
Is Meg channelling Jon Bon Jovi circa 1987 with this fright wig? There's 'rock chick' hair and then there's 'power ballad' hair - and sadly this is the latter.
Meg-Ryan.jpg
Alexa Chung
Oh Alexa, you were shaping so nicely for style icon status, and then stepped out with this bad, bad case of bed hair. A little serum wouldn't have gone amiss.

...Not, not not

Dated: June 18, 2008 5:50 PM

Dated: June 18, 2008 5:50 PM

HJi-Snapshot-competition.jpgSince we launched My HJi we've really loved seeing the lovely images that you have uploaded.

So starting in July we're launching a new competition - My HJi Snapshot - to reward the images that really stand out from the crowd.

The competition begins on July 1, and we've teamed up with the lovely folk at TIGI to give the winner a kitbag packed full of goodies from their Hardcore range and an annual subscription to HJ.

What's this My HJi Snapshot competition all about?

It's a monthly photo competition to showcase the talents of our readers. You've got a month to upload the images that you are most proud of. At the end of the month we'll ask an esteemed judge to select the month's winner. In July, we're delighted to have Nick Irwin and the TIGI Creative Team on board to choose the winner.

What do I have to do?

Either take a picture of great hair or sort through your portfolio and find a style (or styles) that you are proud of. Then log in to My HJi - if you aren't already a member you'll need to sign up - and add your photo to the July photo gallery. You can add as many images as you like, but once you use an image once, you won't be able to use it again in a subsequent month.

Can my photo be of anything?

It can be anything from your portfolio - from a complex avant garde creation to a great blow dry. It doesn't need to have been shot professionally and it can even be on a block or mannequin - just as long as it is hair to be proud of we look forward to seeing it.

I'm still a student, can I enter?

TIGI-hardcore-products.jpg
Oh yes, My HJi Snapshot is open to anyone with who has created a great hair style they'd like to enter. July's prize is a TIGI Kitbag filled with goodies such as a hairdryer, curl stick and straightening irons from their Hardcore range -  so it's the perfect prize if you're starting out in the industry!

So what's in it for me?

As our very first My HJi snapshot competition winner, you'll have your winning photo appear on the Community Page in HJ. You'll also walk away with a kit back complete with all the essential items a hairdresser needs and a year long subscription to HJ.

Good luck!

*Please note that the competition doesn't launch until July 1, so you won't be able to find the gallery on My HJi until then.

Keratin-Milk-OTC.jpg
Ever noticed how some of life's most beautiful things are often the most fragile? That's certainly the case with beautiful blondes that can have their structure weakened by the colouring techniques that create them.

Now Schwarzkopf Professional have developed BLONDME Keratin Restore Milk to provide the ultimate pick-me-up for blondes.

By infusing the hair's inner structure with keratins, Keratin Restore Milk strengthens blonde hair by literally filling in the gaps to provide hair with strength, and restore elasticity.

There are two products in the range: The rinse-out Salon Intense Treatment to be used by salon professionals only; and the leave-in Home Maintenance Treatment that maintains blonde hair between visits.

THIS COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED!

Following the recent changes to the NHF Art Team with the new role of Charlie Taylor as creative director, the team has announced a re-brand with a new name for the summer - NHF Inspire.

"We're setting our sites on bigger activities and a higher profile this year and when we all met recently to brainstorm ideas, we realised that one of the main confusions with our peers was distinguishing the creative body of the NHF with the competition arena. Creating a new brand around the team will work to set us apart," explained Charlie.

NHF Inspire is the creative body of the NHF and hosts seminars, produces hair trend photographic shoots, and works on magazine editorial shoots with the aim of inspiring and motivating NHF members.

intro-audience.jpg

However experienced you are as a manager, it's always beneficial to step away from the business and look for inspiration both from inside and outside the industry.

This is what makes HJ Business Live such an invaluable event for salon owners and managers.

The most recent event took place in the salubrious surroundings of the Kensington Roof Gardens, London, where they were treated to presentations from a leading entrepreneur, a top hairdressing business coach and a former England rugby captain.

introgarden.jpg
Proving equally as inspiring and informative as the presentations was a forum, featuring a panel of leading hairdressers and suppliers - including representatives from each of the day's sponsors, Racoon, TIGI and Goldwell.

Topics discussed were based on questions from delegates, and included branding; the importance of investment in marketing; how the industry can unite to improve the public perception of hairdressing as an industry and a career; the pros and cons of compulsory registration for hairdressers and various management issues.

Great news this week - Andrew Barton's Diary

Posted by

Dated: June 27, 2008 2:42 PM

Dated: June 27, 2008 2:42 PM

Andrew Barton 100.JPG
The highlight of this week has to be the phone call I received from Jayne Lewis-Orr at HJ telling me that I was a nominee for British Hairdresser of the Year for the sixth consecutive year.
I was with a client when I received the call and she ran straight out to buy a bottle of Champaign for us to celebrate.
All this week I have been up and down the country. I was in Bournemouth on Monday talking to a hairdressing group about creative cutting. Then on Tuesday I was in Birmingham for the last date of the tour I am doing with Kerastase. The aim of this road show has been to inspire young people and make them aware of the incredible opportunities they have in front of them.
I enjoy being a token of career success in hairdressing for youngsters to tap into.
On Wednesday I was working on a photo shoot for the new News of the World magazine, Fabulous. It was a colour story - brunette to blonde.
Although I'm not a colourist I enjoy using colour - it's essential to our industry. The salon of the future will be a colour house rather than just a cutting house. The modern client is more excited about colour than anything else.
I was back in the salon for the end of the week - always my favourite place to be.

'Anyone Can Do it' Sahar Hashemi Tells Hairdressers

Posted by

Posted by Kate
Dated: June 25, 2008 5:06 PM

Dated: June 25, 2008 5:06 PM

sahar3.jpg

  • Sahar is the woman who kicked off the coffee house revolution in the UK. She is also the author of motivational book, Anyone Can Do it, a title that sums up her life philosophy. But she didn't always possess entrepreneurial spirit.

"If anyone had asked me when I was younger if I was an entrepreneur I would have said 'no'," said Sahar. "Growing up, my image of an entrepreneur was someone like Richard Branson. I didn't make my first million selling sweets in the playground, so I didn't place myself in the same category."

Sahar followed a career that she thought would please other people - she became a solicitor.

"I was doing a job that didn't suit my personality. I was leaving 40% of myself at home every time I went to work. When I asked my colleagues why work wasn't more fun the reply was 'you're not being paid to enjoy yourself.'"

It was the premature death of Sahar's father in 1994 that forced her to reassess her life and take the decision to leave her job and visit her brother Bobby in New York. She had planned to use the time in America to reflect, but instead, the trip provided the inspiration that would make her a hugely successful entrepreneur.

While in New York Sahar discovered a coffee bar and fell in love with the range of lattes, cappuccinos and espressos available there, served with blueberry muffins by professional staff in modern uniforms.

During her time in New York, Sahar visited the café every day and found that when she returned home to London, she missed it. sahar2.jpg

A casual remark to her brother when he returned to London, that she wished she could find a similar bar in London, started the ball rolling. Bobby recognised there was a gap in the market and suggested the two of them be the ones to fill it. Reticent at first, Sahar began to research the London market. She soon became convinced that the UK was ready for a New York-style coffee bar.

The first 19 bank managers the pair visited looking for a £90,000 loan were not so easily convinced, however. "They asked me why a nation of tea drinkers would want American coffee bars," said Sahar.

Fortunately, the 20th bank manager did share their vision and the pair opened the first Coffee Republic on South Molton Street in Mayfair.

One important piece of advice Sahar passed on to the HJ Business Live delegates was: "Don't be put off by a 'no'. People are always going to say 'no' - factor that in and there is no dream you can't accomplish."

Sahar also stressed that Coffee Republic was not an instant success. "It takes 15 years to become an overnight success," she said. "We needed to turn over £700 per day to break even and for the first six months we were only taking £200. When you start something new, you have to factor in the fact that customers don't like change initially."

Customer came around, however, and in 1996 the pair opened their second store and by 1997 the number of outlets had risen to seven.

sahar.jpgIt was in 2001, with the Coffee Republic empire totalling 110 outlets and turning over £30 million, that Sahar decided she wanted to sell.

"I was beginning to feel like an over-protective parent and decided it was time to sell my shares in the company," she recalls.

The morning after she and Bobby had signed on the dotted line, however, she realised she had made a terrible mistake.

"It was like bereavement," Sahar told delegates.

There was no looking back, however, and following her foray into publishing, Sahar turned her entrepreneurial skills to confectionery with the launch of Skinny Candy, a range of healthy sweets and cakes.

Whether this brand will revolutionise confectionery in the same way that Coffee Republic did coffee bars remains to be seen, but if anyone can do it, Sahar can - and according to Sahar, so could anyone.

Learning to Keep Clients Happy With Peter Lunn

Peter Lunn 2.jpgHJ Business Live: inspiring hairdressers
Sahar Hashemi on entrepreneurship
Will Carling on leadership

Peter bounded on stage to an enthusiastic response from delegates and began his presentation with a bold promise: "I guarantee that you will take something away from the next hour that will make a positive difference to your salon."

The theme of his presentation was how keep clients happy by learning to listen - and ensuring staff share your vision.

"In British hairdressing we haemorrhage clients," said Peter. "We lose so many opportunities to grow client numbers. As managers, we may have high expectations by can we manage our people to deliver them."

Continued Peter: "A client expects your staff to be experts in terms of their skills, knowledge, advice and the service they offer. Clients are getting more and more educated - but we should be the ones getting educated and giving advice."

The aim, said Peter, should be to make all hairdressers hair review specialists - skilled at interacting with the client, engaging them mentally and emotionally and making them feel valued.

One of Peter's pet hates is hairdressers who talk to the client through the styling mirror. "Who else talks to people like that? It constantly puts people in a position where they feel uncomfortable."

peter lunn1.jpg
The secret to getting staff to offer a more skilled service is to build their confidence, said Peter. "When you start new staff part of their initial training should be confidence building."

Peter's other major piece of advice to delegates was to ensure every one of their clients had a personal hair plan, including advice on what products to use and a schedule of when to return to the salon.

According to Peter just 20% of clients actually visit the salon every eight weeks, while 80% probably average no more then three times a year - a trend that could be turned around by an effective hair plan for each client.

But change must start with the salon owner/manager, said Peter. "If we don't improve our management skills, we will never improve the people that we manage," he concluded.

Motivating Your Workforce Will Carling Style

Posted by

Posted by Kate
Dated: June 25, 2008 5:36 PM

Dated: June 25, 2008 5:36 PM

carlin2.jpgHJ Business Live: inspiring hairdressers

Sahar Hashemi on entrepreneurship
Peter Lunn on self motivation

Former England rugby captain, Will may not sound like the obvious person to inspire hairdressers and salon owners, but his experience of leading the team to numerous victories contains valuable lessons for anyone needing to motivate a team.

Will was just 23 when he was made captain of England, and he soon recognised that the players were not acting as a team.

"Most of the players didn't even speak to each other because they played for different clubs," Will told delegates. "They didn't talk about winning - their main concern was how long they would stay in the team. All they cared about was not being dropped."

When Will took over the job of captain the team was winning 20% of its games, when he left they were winning 80%.

The strategy Will employed could be applied to any salon business. It all came down to setting players long-term goals and constantly motivating them.

carling3.jpg
At the beginning of his captaincy Will presented each player with a wallchart, which plotted their lives for the next three years, broken down by each week.

"This started players thinking about three years down the line rather than the next game," said Will.

The other major change in approach was to start analysing how results were achieved. "I wanted us to stop just looking at outcomes and start looking at processes," said Will. "We needed to understand why we won the games we did win so that we could repeat the success."

Getting to know the team members as men and not just players was also integral to the team's success, said Will.

"It was important to get to know every player as a person so that when they walked through the door I knew what frame of mind they were in," he said.

Focussing on what players did well was also important, said Will. "In sport a lot of coaches focus on what a player can't do, I praised the guys about what they could do."

carling 1.jpgWill recounted an occasion where before a match against France he put a card under the door of each player's hotel room, with a personalised account of why he thought they were a great player. "It's little efforts like this that make a huge impact on people," he told delegates.

Learning to listen was another important element of Will's success. "I needed to know what the team needed from me. I needed to listen to them. I asked 'what can I stop doing to make it easier for you?'" said Will.

Delegates were certainly happy to listen to Will's story, and no doubt took away some valuable techniques for motivating their own workforces.
