I started the week in Istanbul doing a three-day shoot for an advertising campaign for a hair company in Turkey. That might sound glamorous, but it it was actually far from it!
I had three women's hair to style; so I had to cut, colour and style their hair and then wait around for ages as they went about the shoots. We shot way until the night - the latest finish was 3am - and then were back at it by 9am so it was exhausting to say the least.
I art direct so many shoots, so it is always interesting when you work with someone else, but you have to be respectful to their style and vision even if it is sometimes different to how you would have done things.

Philip Says:
"Dry hair is probably the easiest hair condition to treat. It is due to loss of moisture in the hair cells – not lack of oil. Therefore, it is important to re-moisturise the hair with products containing the necessary ingredients.
"Creams which contain a mixture of water and oils that are applied to the hair, massaged in, then steamed to aid penetration, are excellent for dry hair. The time involved in steaming varies depending on the severity of the dryness – the drier the hair, the more time is needed. It is also best to use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner, and a protective leave-in conditioner.
"Contrary to what may be thought, the more frequently the hair is shampooed, the healthier it will be. Finally, avoid hard brushing (dry hair is weaker and breaks more easily), and do not over-dry the hair – stop blow-drying when the hair is just dry."

Philip Says:
"These days, there is really no such thing as greasy hair. The hair gets greasier because it is not washed frequently enough.
"Hair should be shampooed as soon as it appears to be greasy, which may be every day.
"It is a normal scalp metabolic process for the hair follicles to produce oil via their sebaceous glands. Some people, particularly those with fine hair, get oily more quickly and if the hair is plentiful and thick, it may be very time consuming to shampoo every day. This, however, is the best way to treat ‘oily hair’."

Philip Says:
"Flaky scalps can be complicated because it is incorrectly thought that a flaky scalp is a dry scalp, but flaky scalps are usually oily. Therefore, applying oil is not going to help.
"Treatments for flaky scalps involve applying a cream direct to the scalp. It’s best to use a cream that contains anti-flaking ingredients such as sulphur, salicylic acid and various anti-bacterial ingredients.
"It’s best to apply the cream to dampened hair, massage it into the scalp with a kneading action, then apply steam or infra-red heat for about 15 minutes.
"Following this, hair should be shampooed with a specific anti-flake shampoo and, ideally, finished with an anti-flaking scalp tonic."

Staff from The Colour Room salon in Stockport recently took part in the 10km Twilight Walk around Manchester city centre, raising more than £1,000 for breast cancer research charity, The Genesis Appeal.
Friends, family and clients of The Colour Room provided sponsorship and extra money was raised in the salon by raffling a luxury hamper of hair appliances and products, as well as all staff donating their tips from the busy Saturday before the walk.
Lauren Arstall, junior stylist from The Colour Room who organised the team event said: “I am very proud of all my colleagues who took part to support this great charity and very grateful for the generosity of our clients who really boosted the amount we were able to raise.”

I spent the first four days of this week in Athens with Saks presenting three seminars a-day. Around 100 people attended each seminar and we were there to share creative ideas on cutting and colour and future trends.
We often visit Greece – we’ve been presenting there for the past 10 years. It’s hard work, with 7am starts every day and the final seminar finishing late in the evening – but its also very rewarding. It’s great to be abroad representing British hairdressing. Greek hairdressers are well educated, but they do look to the UK for influence.

Beverly C became the first female to be awarded an MBE for services to hairdressing when she received her investiture from the Queen on May 1.
After receiving the award at Buckingham Palace, dressed in a stunning cream suit and fascinator, Beverly told us she was thrilled to have her achievements recognised.
"It feels amazing," says Beverly. "When I won British Hairdresser of the Year for the first time and then got it again I didn't think anything could possibly beat that.
"But, when I was awarded this for services to the hairdressing industry it takes it to a totally different level. I was absolutely honoured."
Beverly has followed in the footsteps of celebrity hairdressers Trevor Sorbie, Charles Worthington, Vidal Sassoon, Nicky Clarke, Daniel Galvin and Errol Douglas, who was also honoured in this year's honours list.
She believes it is her long term commitment to the industry, that is being recognised rather than a specific achievement.
"It looks back at your entire hisrory," she adds. "They are looking at your overall contribution over a long period of timeand what contribution you have made and how you have made a difference to the industry.
"That in itself is really good - that you can get an award for being involved in a career for the last 25 years."
As one of the industries leading icons, Beverly has some sound advice for hairdressers hoping to follow in her footsteps and make it to the top.
She says: "You have to really love your career and all the aspects of it. But it's about not being afraid to go forward or afraid to take the next step.
"There are a lot of people out there who will help you. Set yourself small goals and enjoy the journey. "

Four long years after Carrie and co. said farewell to the small screen the Sex and the City girls and their iconic styles are back creating a storm ahead of their eagerly awaited movie.
But have the girls still got what it takes in the style stakes or will the film create a stir in the hairdressing world for all the wrong reasons?
Here's what Royston Blythe and Nick Malenko have to stay about the foursome's distinctive styles:

Kristin Davis
"This is a great look for hair that is naturally straight. Poker straight hair has had its day so to update the look, add loads of volume at the crown and keep a little more movement at the ends of the hair. Apply a serum to the hair and blow-dry with a large, round brush and then set on large Velcro rollers for maximum volume. Brush through and finish with texture spray."
Royston
Sarah Jessica Parker
"This season is all about sexy, volumised, modern hair and as always SJP nails it! She screams effortless glamour. To achieve the look, use a volume mousse and blow-dry with a large, round bristle brush to give the hair a smooth finish. Section the hair, use a heat defence styling spray and create movement using large tongs. Once the hair has cooled, run your fingers through to separate and soften the curls. Finish with a gloss spray."
Nick
Cynthia Nixon
"Bobs are timeless, however they have been done to death! The colour is amazing, however, if you like your bob, go more daring on the colour like Cynthia. This graduated bob is best achieved with a volume mousse, to protect the colour and add body and lift. Blow-dry with a flat brush to achieve a smooth look and finish with a gloss spray or shine serum."

An impressive £2,500 was raised by the hair and beauty industries for their own charity on the second annual HABB Day on Friday 2nd May 2008.
HABB President, Eva Proudman was delighted by the success of the fundraising day and is convinced that as time goes on HABB Day will become an even bigger and better date in the diary.
"Unlike the more established national charity days and months, HABB is only in its early stages and is very much promoted by word of mouth and a trade campaign amongst salons and companies familiar with the good work HABB does," she says
"It's an aim of the Fundraising Committee to continue shouting about this day, year on year, and hope that it quickly becomes a regular date in our industry's diary, just like other days/months have become."
HABB received support from a number of companies, each doing their own thing on the day to raise funds and awareness:

HABB Chairman, Phillip Rogers says: "Every penny raised from the day is used to help HABB's beneficiaries, which is essential.
"However, the day is also a way to talk about the charity's work and encourage as many professionals to get behind our own industry's charity - whether it's through supporting HABB Day or attending one of our organised events.
"A huge thanks goes out to all the companies who donated money for HABB Day and already this has increased from last year. We really hope to see more companies support the day next year."
If you'd still like to donate, are interested in helping HABB or have a fundraising initiative call 01372 849 639 or visit www.habb.org.

After a couple of weeks doing shows and seminars in the Mediterranean, this week I've been on the road with my haircare range Shiny Happy Hair.
I've visited Asda stores in Manchester, Leeds, Cheshire and the Midlands meeting my public(!) and offering advice on haircare and how best to use my products.
Everyone thinks that having your range is probably a dream come true, but it is a huge workload! Fortunately, I have a fab team around me - we're calling them 'Team Barton'!- to give me support.
I've recently employed a new MD to help me out. She comes from both a large corporate and small business background and is really helping me to put a proper business structure to the company.
Despite it being a lot of hard work, I'm really enjoying the work because it is all new to me. I've been in hairdressing for 25 years, but launching Shiny Happy Hair has made it feel like I have done my first year all over again.
The great thing about getting out and about is that you meet people and you get to know what they really think. It's really interesting to hear what women want from their haircare range and how they describe them.
As an industry, sometimes we get locked into our own language and terminology and it doesn't necessarily mean anything to the consumer. We'll describe colours and cuts with professional language; but to be honest saying graduated bob means nothing to your average person, whereas 'Victoria Beckham's bob' means everything.
That's actually an extension of a lot of the work that I have done at Saks, which has been to understand trends and buying power so that we can appeal to women nationwide rather than just targeting a London-centric type.
As the consumer becomes more savvy about what she buys and how she buys it - especially in what is fast becoming a challenging economic climate - it's vital that we respond to her needs.
I've had the opportunity to launch my own haircare range for quite some time, but always held of until it felt like it could be my signature rather than the direction a company wanted to take me in.
It might turn out to be the wrong decision, but I wanted to be involved in everything, from the formula to the smell to the marketing message on the back of the bottle, so that there is a little bit of Andrew (and my years of experience) in every bottle.

Lucie Doughty is Paul Mitchell's editorial director.
Although she was born in England, Lucie now lives in the US and spends her time either hairdressing on stage, working in the salon, or maintaining the manes of celebrities such as Rene Russo, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Charlize Theron, and Kelly Clarkson, to name but a few.
Do you also work in a salon?
Yes, one or two days a week I work in a salon in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles. I love the working environment of the salon and the energy it creates. It's great to see what other stylists are up to and to maintain relationships with my clients.
How much of your time is spent working for Paul Mitchell?
I am always working for Paul Mitchell and never stop thinking about ways in which I can support the company's vision.
Where do you spend most of your time?
I live in the very eclectic Venice Beach, California. It has a laid-back vibe, mixed with the excitement of being in the city, and I absolutely love it.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Where I live, the sunshine, the ocean and the people around me.
I absolutely love fashion magazines, especially the more obscure magazines that push the limits of fashion and hair.
What are your main responsibilities for Paul Mitchell?
To produce and direct the look and feel of photo shoots, which means doing the hair and ultimately getting Paul Mitchell credited in consumer and trade magazines.
When my celebrity clients get featured in magazines Paul Mitchell is usually credited, which allows the company name to connect with consumers and hairdressers in ways other than traditional advertising.
I do hair for a lot of different mediums including commercials, print adverts, fashion shows and editorial shoots. I also produce images for a lot of the marketing material for the company and when we have a celebrity or charity event, I help direct the look of the hair.
What's the best thing about being the creative force behind Paul Mitchell?
There are many creative people in the Paul Mitchell family and I am fortunate to be a part of that. I think the best thing is being able to go anywhere in the world knowing that I have the support of the Paul Mitchell team to make sure I'm set up for success.
How much of your time is spent travelling?
Half of my year is on the road; sometimes it's great, other times I miss my home. Whatever the situation, I learn from it and enjoy the experience.
Where did you travel to last year and what were the highlights for 2007?
I travelled to Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa, China, Las Vegas, Germany, Paris, Chicago, Tennessee, Maryland, Washington, Florida, and Rhode Island.
The highlight was the trip to South Africa and working onstage with our artistic director, Stephanie Kocielski.
Is there anything about your job that you don't like?
There are not enough hours in the day.
How would you describe your life?
Full of surprises

Most famed for her role as M in the James Bond films, Dame Judi Dench has also carved out a career for herself as the queen of the period drama.
But is her look on the money (penny) or more at home in the nineteenth centuary roles she plays?
London hairdressers Sean Fordham of Fordham Soho and Kellie Allen of Martin Hoarau Hairdressing both told us that Dame Judi's got her look spot on.
They agree that there is not a lot that could be done to improve her style.
"Judi's haircut is short and sassy, and the natural wave creates great movement and texture. I definitely think it suits her face shape and her hair colour is great," says Sean.
"If I was to update the haircut I wouldn't change very much, except develop more of a fringe to soften the look. Overall, it's a great cut for a great Dame."
While Kellie thinks it's a great look that could only be enhanced with a richer blonde.
She adds: "I like Judi's new look. The colour is a fresh, clean blonde, which looks healthy.
"If I was to do anything I may enhance the existing blonde and apply a darker, richer blonde around the exterior, to bring out the natural warmth in Judi's face."
Discuss Dame Judi, or any other celebrities', hair on the My HJi forums.

Students with a hunger to learn will want access to information at any time and from anywhere, and the internet offers this possibility.
Manufacturers, private academies, and salon operators are all starting to embrace online training as part of the educational mix.
Hairdressing-Training.com
One of the first salons to recognise the benefits of online learning was Jordan Burr in London. Owners Jo Jordan and Glen Burr founded the hairdressing-training.com website in 1999 and it has increased both in terms of its offering, and the number of users, and has continued to be a pioneering force in online training.
Says Glen: "Online training with hairdressing-training.com allows trainees and hairdressers easy access to learn at their own pace. It can be used in the workplace or at home.
"Learning online is an aid for trainees to gain knowledge and be able to work at their own pace.
"Hairdressing-training.com is available in more than 200 UK colleges of further education, is free of charge and is one of the first training websites to be made available on mobile phones, and soon as podcasts.
"The site is at the forefront of online education with the full support of the Learning Skills Council, offering new and creative technologies to our industry."
The site is due for a relaunch later this year, so watch this space.
ECH Head Training
Glasgow-based Ellen Conlin Hair and Beauty launched its HEAD Training scheme in 2006, and was the first salon in Scotland to have its training scheme accredited by the Scottish Qualification Authority.
According to salon co-owner, Ellen Conlin-Main, the HEAD training scheme is designed to give young members of staff as much training as possible without them having to attend an outside college, which ultimately saves the business time and money.
External verifiers can also access the online course from their home or office.
The course can be completed in 12 to 18 months and covers everything from team building and selling techniques to barbering and hair colouring. Students are constantly assessed throughout this time to ensure they maintain a high standard.
At the end of the course, the candidate will have created a portfolio of achievements, outlining their capabilities in detail as a reference point for the future.
Says Ellen: "Online training is definitely the way forward. It has proven to be valuable and we have a large number of determined and driven youngsters looking to join our salon because of the high-quality training available to them.
"Not only is the HEAD online training scheme a practical way to learn and make headway in hairdressing, it is helping our youngsters fulfil their career goals quickly and efficiently. It has made recruiting staff easier and reduced staff turnover."
myhairdressers.com
"Affordable, accessible and instant," is how the creative team behind Lee Stafford's www.myhairdressers.com describe the training available through its site - which pretty much sums up the appeal of online training in general.
Myhairdressers.com is a subscription-based web learning tool offering in-depth step-by-step instruction from experienced creative minds, including Lee Stafford and Stacey Broughton.
The site allows salon owners and staff access to up to 24 detailed step-by-steps, including classic, progressive and commercial work, and includes a cut of the month from Lee.
Alan d
Alan d comprises four London and Surrey-based salons and one of the largest privately owned training academies in the UK.
Two years ago it launched an online presence selling training DVDs, but is in the process of launching a dedicated training site.
Says Edward Hemmings, creative director at Alan d: "Our website regularly gets 100,000 hits per month and we realised we could do more with it. We investigated the possibility of breaking our collection down into downloadable segments available to hairdressers worldwide.
"The educational website will be launched imminently and will include regular new training films as well as practical NVQ-based programmes covering setting, perming and other techniques that many salon owners struggle to teach."
ask-schwarzkopf.com
Manufacturers are also realising the power of the web when it comes to education. Schwarzkopf Professional, for example, is now offering its training expertise online.
Registration is free and those signing up will have access to interactive learning tools, the latest Essential Looks collection and step by steps.
Comments Mark Todd, professional partner services manager and head of technical division for Schwarzkopf Professional: "ASK online will not replace the current support we offer all of our salons for in-house education, but will work in synergy, providing a 24-hour/365-days per year opportunity for information-led requests.
"Our web platform provides daily updates on all fields of creative and product-related subject matter, and will not only supplement the training we provide but also embed the relevance to salons of web-based media with no time restrictions."
As an increasing number of trainers recognise the power of web-based training, education will continue to become easier to access and, like the internet itself, the possibilities are limitless.

Award-winning hair salons Toni&Guy Leeds King Edward Street and Toni&Guy Leeds Trevelyan Square helped to give four breast cancer sufferers a lift with a hairdressing 'Masterclass'.
The 'Masterclass' initiative is the brainchild of Caroline Monk, a former cancer sufferer who strives to make women who are going through cancer look, and feel beautiful.
Toni&Guy were thrilled to support the debut event; donating their time, staff and skills in order to make women feel feminine despite having to deal with the exhausting effects of chemotherapy.
The Masterclass involved four nominated women, all of whom are breast cancer sufferers, having their wigs cut and styled; resulting in a perfect day of pampering and a sure-fire confidence boost!
The day was a huge success; the women left with their tresses having been cut into chic and wearable styles and their confidence levels soaring.
"There was no way that we could say no when Caroline asked us to get on board her latest fundraising venture; it was such a fantastic project to be involved in and so rewarding to see the ladies leave the salon looking gorgeous and glamorous!
"We look forward to taking part again in 2009!" said Rob, of Leeds Kind Edward Street.

Business entrepreneurs Kevin Nicholls & Ashley Howard of Roo Salon have put the talents of Marketing students at Leeds University to the test by setting them consultancy projects that form a critical part of their postgraduate Masters degree in International Marketing Management.
The pair tasked the students with looking into the traditional male grooming business abroad, as well as the pink and grey markets; they also asked them to research the different markets for; hairdressing scissors and pouches.
Kevin admits that he was delighted to have helped the university by being involved with the project, and said it has had enormous benefits for them and their brands roo pouches and roo blades.
"Both Ashley and I have found this exercise very useful and we are glad to have been asked to participate in this project," says Kevin. "From a client's perspective, the benefits are huge/ I not only get consultancy services but I can get different groups of students to look at different aspects of our businesses'
Ashley adds "We have been extremely impressed with the students' efforts...many of their recommendations have real value in taking our brand forward...more importantly, I could really see how students have adapted and developed their ideas over time."
Students were thanked for their efforts at an award ceremony where Ashley presented prizes to the students who had created the best presentations and handed out participation certificates and 50% discount vouchers for use at Box Creative Hairdressing to everyone who had taken part.

Former premiership player Justin Edinburgh will be the new face of Nourkrin Man, a natural hair nutrition programme for the prevention of thinning hair.
Justin, who played for Tottenham Hotspurs for 10 years, noticed that his hair was thinning a few years ago and turned to Nourkrin Man to help retain his locks.
"Footballers hairstyles are often commented on and as I'm still heavily involved in other aspects of the game I always hoped nobody would ask me about my hair.
"Since using Nourkrin Man I feel much more confident about my hair and I can now present on TV safe in the knowledge there are no thinning areas that the camera can pick up on."
Justin is also co-owner of a successful hairdressing salon with HJ's Men's Hairdresser of the Year 2007 Jim Shaw and is fully aware of how important hair and appearance can be.
"Keegan was renowned for his curls and Beckham's current hairstyle is always in the news so, I'm very conscious of how hair is often the focus when you are a footballer.
"Being co-owner of a hair salon meant that when I visited the salon the stylists weren't shy in telling me to do something about my thinning hair."

At the launch, held in Jacks' Wimbledon branch, guests were offered free beer, champagne and manly snacks, alongside complimentary haircuts, shaves and Redken For Men samples.
Jacks of London was the brainchild of Sue Whitehead, who noticed that male clients in her salon weren't getting what they wanted from the hairdressing experience.

On the show, recruits Claire Coxon and Kelly Chamberlain were taught how to flaunt their assets while their hair was enhanced thanks to Racoon International's revolutionary Micro Wefts.

Think you could transform the tresses of hundreds of happy shoppers in one evening? That's the challenge that faced the Jo Hansford team when they represented L'Oréal Professionnel at the latest Glamour/Mango reader evening at the Mango Flagship store on Oxford Street.
The team, headed up by Steve Carr, tonged, crimped and blow-dried into the night as the throng of 2000 shoppers eagerly awaited their super quick hair make-over at the tecni.art pamper zone.
Shoppers were transformed in a matter of minutes as Steve and the team steadily made their way through the expectant queue. Curls were the look for the evening with girls wanting to swap their poker straight locks with gentle, natural and dishevelled curls.
The trend for big voluminous hair couldn't be missed either with shoppers experimenting with the popular Amy Winehouse look. "What a treat!" one shopper said, "shopping and a new do! What more could a girl ask for in one evening?""
Surrounded by hairspray, mousse and wax and four hours of continuous styling later, the team were exhausted but clearly buzzing from their success. "What a night!" exclaimed Steve, "hard work but great fun - it's not often you get to meet so many clients in one evening!"

Hairdressers from the Jericho Hairdressing salon group received a huge shock when they discovered that they had been booked to style the hair of guests at the royal wedding of Peter Phillips and Autumn Kelly.
Just 30 minutes before the long-standing booking at a hotel near to the Berkshire salons, they were told that they would be responsible for coiffing the hair of grandmothers of the bride, Edith McCarthy and Ivy Kelly, as well as the wedding's flower girl.
Peter Phillips, son of Princess Anne, became the first of the Queen's grandchildren to wed when he married Canadian Autumn Kelly at St. George's Chapel in Windsor.
Stylists, Michaela Chapman and Amy Gemmel of Jericho Maidenhead, Leigh Swadling and Sophie Glover of Jericho Bracknell, had the privilege of representing their salon and British hairdressing to the family, on this exceptional day.
Michaela says: "It was truly an amazing shock to find out suddenly who I was going to be doing the hair for, but then again, at Jericho we pride ourselves on our work so why not!."
Director of Jericho Hairdressing group, Alyn Davies, adds: "We are extremely proud to be able to be part of this special occasion and also proud that our stylists have this opportunity. My team are professionals and incomparable'.

"Ladies that Lunch" was the theme of an inspiring fashion show by leading Exeter salon V&M Hair in collaboration with Crede Boutique.
The catwalk show was an inspired collection of creative, fashionable looks with a commercial and wearable edge, so that guests could interpret the look to suit their individual style.
"The show was a huge success, and a great outlet for the salon team's creativity," says salon owner Anita Vines. "The collaboration between V&M and Crede works perfectly as our businesses complement each other both in style and ethos - together we put on a unmissable event for our special guests.
"These shows always generate business, and are also great for the image of the salon and motivation of the team."
V&M Hair is one of the most revered and sophisticated salons in the area, and a favourite of the local press. They have also worked with ITV on fashion make-overs and continue to have a high-profile throughout the county.

London salon Inanch has tied up a sponsorship deal with Walt Disney Film Studios to style the hair for Disney film executives and film stars coming over from the USA to their UK Film Premieres and Press Conferences.
The deal is the first of it's kind in the UK and salon director Joe Emir says "Disney is recognized as the leading family entertainment brand worldwide with family brand values and it is a great honour to be given this wonderful opportunity to work with Disney in the UK.
"Having worked on film premieres in the past, there were occasions where the talent coming over from the USA didn't have their own hair stylists at hand and it was struggle for us to get hold of a good hairdresser in time for the premiere or press conference".
As part of the deal Disney will be supplying movie trailers and special movie clips for Inanch-TV which is the salon's own in-salon TV channel. Inanch TV was launched by the salon's PR & Production agency, Catwalk Creations.
"We were having problems with our salon TV network supplier. The content was not being updated regularly and there were too many commercials being played." adds Joe. "With Inanch-TV we have bespoke content which is updated on a monthly basis and covers the latest in Fashion TV, lifestyle programmes, travel destinations, movie trailers and our own promotional offers".

There aren't too many industries that let you see the best in the business in action and get the chance to learn from your idols.
But, thanks to organisations such as the Fellowship for British Hairdressing and the training courses organised by the leading product manufacturers, hairdressing breaks that mould.
Whether you are an assistant just starting out in the industry or an established hairdresser who never wants to stop learning, there is always plenty of benefits to attending such events.
Carolyn Newman, Colour & Art team Director at Charles Worthington, shares her experiences from The Fellowship for British Hairdressing Power Night with Tim Hartley.
"When I was hairdressing in Tasmania, I only dreamt of being able to see the best of British hairdressers not only on stage but up, close & personal.
"The wonderful thing about the Fellowship is that they give you this opportunity and last night was no exception watching Tim Hartley's Power night.
"With a packed out audience at the L'Oreal International Academy Tim had us all enthralled for the evening.
"His presentation opened with a beautiful black & white video depicting Tim's journey since leaving Sassoons, and showing his collections from the last two years
"Using a slide show, Tim talked us through his inspirations from: architecture, design and photography, explaining that hair is an art form and image and hair changes people's lives. He explained how form is function and how he then translates this into his haircuts.
"Tim then cut three models live on stage. Firstly depicting how to use length in a different way for long haircuts, then demonstrating graduation and texture and finally using combinations of cutting short hair with length.
"For me the keys points Tim demonstrated were how to expose your clients best features, especially the cheekbones, to work visually but precise and the use of strong simplistic colours in jet black, ruby red and shiny chestnuts.
"Tim presents in a relaxed, understated professional way and made us all feel at ease and invited questions from the audience, which there were many. The evening finished to a huge applause showing six models wearing his cuts and vision for the future, looking stylish and strong.
"Thanks again Tim for inspiring all of us - and to the Fellowship for providing these fabulous events."

Bonomini in Bristol had a novel approach to choosing who would put together their shoot for the South Western Hairdresser of the Year in this year's British Hairdressing Awards: they held a photographic competition for the team.
The idea behind the competition was to find the keenest, most creative talent from within the team and to give an equal opportunity for all.
Bonimi drafted in an expert judging panel of leading hair and beauty PR Louise Wood; local Clifton Life magazine editor Victoria Green and a local photographer 'Sorya', to select who would create their Awards photographic entry.
"Funding a shoot for us is a huge deal as a single independent salon with 16 staff," says Egidia Bonomini. "So we wanted this to be something the salon could share.
"To help the whole team to buy into it, and to give everyone a fair chance to be chosen to work on our major shoot, we threw a competition evening inviting everyone in the salon to show what they can do."
The artistic trio of Sam Bell, Amy Gregory and Henry Whittle were ultimately selected as the shoot team.

Founders of Rainbow Room International, Alan and Linda Stewart, have achieved tremendous success in the 29 years they've been in business. But being crowned Business Directors of the Year at HJ's British Hairdressing Business Awards last year has helped take their expanding enterprise - which comprises a chain of 12 salons across Scotland and a thriving training academy - to even greater heights.
We caught up with Linda to find out how the award has benefited the business, and to hear how the dynamic duo has achieved such success.
How has winning HJ's 2007 Business Directors of the Year award affected Rainbow Room International?
Winning has definitely helped us build on our highly regarded reputation. This is thanks to positive coverage in the Scottish press, which has increased our local profile and added fantastic credibility to our trade. Winning such a prestigious award also helps with recruitment, which is essential to our continued growth. And it's also been fantastic for team morale, as every salon in the group has a great sense of pride in being associated with a successful company.
What have been some of your key career highlights since the win?
It's been very exciting to launch our own online live bookings system, with secure payment facilities. Our website and online appointment request service has always been popular with clients, and offering a secure online appointment booking facility was the next logical step. Our clients can now make an appointment via the internet, and change or amend their booking up to 48 hours before their visit. It's a unique service that provides our clients with greater choice and flexibility. We're also in the latter stages of planning a new franchise salon to expand the group even further.
How have you used your business director expertise within the wider hairdressing industry?
We run popular business courses in our Glasgow academy and winning has helped us market this training.
We've also built up relationships with other salons throughout the UK, the owners of which call us from time to time for guidance or advice, which we're only too happy to provide.
One of the cornerstones of our success is that we have an 'open door' policy - any salon is welcome to come and view our operation, and find out more about the way we run our salons and academy.
Looking back at your career, what lessons have you learned?
Opening our second salon wasn't easy. The concept was for it to be an advanced training school as well as a salon.
We had almost no budget to cover advertising and promotion, so we were spending a lot of money on photographs and taking part in shows, which was costing us more than we were getting paid.
We took a step back to analyse our biggest strength - training - and developed a plan to use the salon/school for clients from Monday to Saturday, and every Sunday we would open too, so Alan and I could run cutting seminars.
The Sunday seminars would be straight profit as we would not pay ourselves and this helped to repay the money we had borrowed from our bank. We were full every Sunday and after a year when we didn't have a single day off, we were in profit.
We hadn't understood profit and loss, or cash flows, and had failed to plan, but it was our artistic and teaching abilities that pulled us through.
From then on we made the decision to learn about business in-depth. We became business junkies, attending seminars, reading books and watching tapes of business gurus every night.
We never want to put our team or ourselves at risk again. Now, we always have a plan A, B and C and we have made sure we are financially stable.
How can salon owners balance management and running a business with inspiring creativity within their team?
Take the time to have a good look at your business and work out what you're really good at, what your strengths are and what creates the most value. We have systems for everything in place within the company, and with good time management, it's possible to multi-task. Sometimes you need to look at all the tasks that need tackling in the salon, and get someone else in to help, who has expertise in the areas you're not so strong in.
What five top tips would you offer other salon owners as essential for business success?

It's no secret that some of the entrants to HJ's British Hairdressing Awards spend a lot of money on their photo shoots, but don't be deterred if your budget is limited - as these winners demonstrate.
Anna Chapman
Trevor Sorbie, Brighton
HJ's 2007 Newcomer of the Year
Anna had practically no budget for her shoot, but it still looked stunning enough to capture the judges' attention.
"I had no budget for the first set of four photos - I used about 300 pounds of my own money for travel expenses for the models," says Anna.
Finding the right models to portray the natural "simply beautiful" look she wanted proved Anna's first challenge. One of the models is a regular client of the salon, the others were found via MySpace.
"Although I didn't have the budget for professional models, I didn't want this to be apparent. I made sure I found women that looked professional - in return they received a free haircut!"
Helping to ensure the models looked like professionals was photographer Owen Kerbe. "Owen is a professional photographer and a close friend and we have wanted to work on a shoot together for a long time. We struck a deal that he would only charge me his usual fee if we made it through to the final. He was great at giving the models direction."
Not that Anna left it all to Owen. "I was very hands-on," she says. "This was a very important shoot to me and I only had one crack at it. I am a bit of a perfectionist so I have to be in control of everything."
Jim Shaw
Essensuals Billericay
HJ's 2007 Men's Hairdresser of the Year
Jim won the men's award with a stunning selection of images. While his budget was higher than Anna's, at 8,000 pounds, it was still relatively small for the results achieved.
Jim had a clear image of what he wanted - which is the essential first step for any shoot.
"I wanted to capture the current trend of groomed hair with sharp lines - an iconic 60s feel with a modern twist," says Jim. "I wanted models to have a sharp and sophisticated look, and for their hair to look well groomed and super-healthy."
The two elements Jim wasn't prepared to compromise on were the models - all sourced from a professional agency in London - and the photographer. Says Jim: "For me, getting the models and the photographer right are the most important aspects of a shoot. I would not compromise on either, as the combination of the two can be the fine line between a winning or losing image.
"My photographer was the brilliant Alessandro Cecchini, who also shot my last collection for HJ's British Hairdressing Awards. It took a large proportion of my budget, but he was worth every penny."
Jim ensured he was extremely hands-on at the shoot. "It took nine months of planning," he says. "And, I enjoyed every moment of it."

Changing lives in a small way is part of what makes up everyday life in the salon. In fact, most hairdressers agree that making the client look and feel better about themselves and leave the salon with a smile on their face is one of their favourite aspects of the job.
Now the industry is striving to take that one-to-one change to a larger scale and really make a difference to the world.
As part of their commitment to making a difference, L'Oreal have signed an agreement with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to create the international campaign Hairdressers Against AIDS.

It's more than two decades since Kylie Minogue, who turns 40 this week, bounded onto our screens. In that time she's gone from girl nextdoor to sex siren to national treasure.
In the style stakes, she is most most-famed for her iconic outfits: from the spangly gold hot pants that relaunched her career to the white hooded costume that got us la-la-la-la-la-ing and more recently her blue 'Showgirls' show-stopper; but her hairstyles have also been through numerous reinventions
As the Aussie superstar hits the big four-oh, we caught up with Ben White, Director, Eleven at 11 Blenheim St to look at her hairstyle hits and misses of the last twenty years.
