As nice as travelling the world and experiencing different cultures is, it is really wonderful to be home and to have my own shower and my own wardrobe to choose from rather than a suitcase.
Over the years, I've got the knack of travelling really light because I have to take so much heavy hair kit, from electricals to spares and products, which are suprisingly heavy.
Generally speaking, I never travel anywhere without my kit, but the other week I had a realy panic because I was taking a really early flight to Glasgow and I left my kit in the exec lounge.
I didn't realise I had left it behind until I was getting off the plane; so I went into a group of students I had never met before and had to borrow theirs. The funny thing was that they were all really nervous about what I would think of their kit!

With two other finalists in the running for the dream honeymoon prize, Jericho wanted to send Kelly away looking her best and ready to win.
“My team really have all the characteristics of a great team, and its no surprise they pulled together huge support for Kelly and the competition’ says Alyn Davies, Company Director of the local salon group.”

The National Hairdressers’ Federation (NHF) is advising employers not to fall foul of discrimination laws. The warning comes in light of the on-going case concerning the Muslim hairstylist suing a London hairdresser on the grounds that she allegedly discriminated against her because of her religious headwear.
Bushra Noah is claiming £34,000 in compensation from Sarah Desrosiers, owner of Wedge in Kings Cross, after being turned down for the job as a junior stylist. The 19 year-old claims the salon owner was “insulting and discriminated against her because of her headscarf.” Sarah Desrosiers denies the claim.

"Her Breakfast At Tiffany’s updo with that little bit of fringe is still current today. It’s the epitome of a timeless style. It’s every girl’s dream to have this party look and ultimately it’s still young and debonair. We regularly have clients who refer to it in the salon.
"It’s a flattering style that suits most face shapes and is one of the ultimate updo’s because there’s a party girl in every woman! Her character Holly Golightly’s look stands for energy.
"Just like the iconic shot of Marilyn Monroe with her skirt billowing up represents that blonde, innocent but flirtatious vibe, Audrey’s sophisticated and glamorous style will make her the poster girl for brunettes forever."

More than 800 hairdressers from all over the world flocked to Germany’s buzzing capital city for the three-day event, which included workshops in cutting, colour and the company’s beautiful new Transparency collection. The National Hairdressers’ Federation have appointed Charlie Taylor, as the 2008 Creative Director for the NHF Art Team.
Charlie, winner of the NHF’s Celebrity Hairdresser of the Year 2007 and a member of the British Hairdressing Hall of Fame, is the first ever Creative Director since the team's formation over five years ago.
Working alongside the team’s Art Team Director, Wendy Cummins, Charlie will be mentoring and educating the ten strong team in a number of activities.
"As an educator, it is really nice for me to work with new people," says Charlie. " To pass on my experience to others is always extremely satisfying; when you are involved in a team you immediately establish a learning environment, where all members of that team gain a huge amount from each other."
"I believe that it is really important for the NHF to establish an Art Team outside of its competition arena to firstly raise the profile of the NHF, and also to ensure it keeps bang up to date with modern techniques and possibly being ahead of the game. It’s going to be a really great year working with the team!"
Charlie will be working with the Art Team throughout the year in a number of activities including their hair trend collections for spring/summer and autumn/winter, presenting seminars at the NHF Conference later in the year, and also heading up the team on stage at Salon International.
The first activity will be an Art Team meeting where Charlie and Wendy will encourage the team to produce moodboard ideas for the first shoot of the year, network with one another, and encourage the team’s creative abilities to shine.

Spending five hours running round London on a wet and windy Sunday morning might seem about as far removed from working in a hair salon as you can possibly get, but for Phil Smith the pair go hand in hand.
Because, since taking up running 18 months ago, the five-times British Hairdresser of the Year Awards nominee has just completed his third marathon.
"When I started running, I said I wanted to try to do a marathon before I turned 40," says Phil. "As it happens, I've done three in a year and there's still time to spare before my fortieth.
"The London Marathon on Sunday was really tough because I didn't really want to do it, but when I was offered a place I still said yes!
"At 23 miles, when the hailstones started to fall and I realised that I wasn't going to achieve my target time of five hours I started to get emotional about that decision!"

When we look at our bodies it's easy to see signs of ageing. Even the most blessed beauty queens can't avoid wrinkles, saggy skin and a tummy that's not quite as firm as it was at 18. But what happens to the hair as we age and how can you help your clients combat dull, limp locks?
World-renowned trichologist Philip Kingsley reveals what happens to ageing hair and the affect that external forces can have on the ageing process.

Not many of us like the physical effects of ageing, but unfortunately there are many signs of growing older we simply can’t stop – and grey hair is one of the most dreaded.
For women especially, this can be a major trauma, but it’s not all doom and gloom. According to Lisa Shepherd, three times Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year, today’s technical advancements in colour mean we can enhance, blend in, disguise or totally cover grey, which is a lot less drastic than going under the knife or having a new set of pearly white veneers.
There are three stages of grey hair, says Lisa. "First it’s the odd stray hair, then a 50% mix of grey with the natural colour, and, finally, total take-over."
But what is it that makes our hair go grey and why are some people lucky enough to bypass the grey stage altogether?
Around the late fifties, says Lisa, natural hair colour fades as the body’s production of melanin decreases. "When melanin production stops altogether, the hair that grows is white. The production of melanin is governed by genetic factors so the best indication of when someone’s hair will become white is when their parents’ hair whitened."
Once the hair has gone grey, it’s important for a colourist to think about the best way to camouflage it, and grabbing the lightest blonde or deepest brunette isn’t the solution.
"A very light blonde often results in a harsh yellow tone being present, so normally as you get older it is advisable to go lighter, as it is softer against your skin tone. Sometimes a few high and lowlights are all that’s needed to begin with," adds Lisa.

Jennifer Aniston's famous 'Rachel' cut became a must-have style in the mid 90s and yet hairdressers are divided in two camps about the look that inspired a generation.
Errol Douglas is one of those who couldn't bear the layered look. "If there was one celebrity cut I wish had never caught on it would be Jennifer Aniston’s ‘The Rachel’ cut," says Errol. "It didn’t really suit anyone!"
In contrast, Richard Ward and Mark Leeson wish that they had been responsible for creating the iconic style. Mark adds: "I think from a commercial point of view the Rachel cut will always be a milestone."
But it's been more than 10 years since the former friends favourite said goodbye to the 'Rachael' and in that time she's experimented with various colours and lengths.

We all know how harmful the sun’s ultra-violet rays can be to skin, and too much sun exposure can also be extremely damaging to hair.
While it’s tempting for your clients to soak up the sunshine and give their locks a naturally sunkissed look, it can wreak havoc with the structure of their strands. Add salt walter and chlorine to the equation and the problem only intensifies, as top trichologist Philip Kingsley explains…
What effect does sun exposure have on hair?
Exposure to the sun breaks down the protein structure of the hair, dramatically weakening the hair shaft and reducing its elasticity, which means it breaks more easily. The sun’s bleaching effects also roughen the texture of the hair, like a chemical bleach, which can leave it looking dull and lacking shine.
Why is it important to protect hair against the sun?
While our skin turns pink in the sun as a warning sign that we’ve been sunbathing for too long, our hair is dead, so there’s no way of telling that it’s harmed until it’s too late. Even in dreary weather, ultra-violet rays still filter through the clouds, so clients should defend their hair every day. Just as many people choose everyday skin products with a sun protection factor (SPF), now many hair styling products are available with similar protection.
How should clients care for their hair when they’re out in the sun?
In the daytime, it’s important to use styling products that contain UV protection. Then, after a day in the sun, put back into hair the moisture and elasticity that the sun strips out. Clients should rinse their hair thoroughly before delivering extra care with nourishing products.
How can salons increase their average client bills in summer?
Salon owners are missing out if they don’t tap into the extra revenue stream that offering specialist post-holiday treatments can bring to the business. In my trichological clinic in Harrods, London, we get through buckets of my reparative treatments in the autumn, undoing all the damage the sun has caused to my clients' hair all summer.

What is good taste? That's the big debate going on in the My HJi forums. In the blue corner, Santilli, our friend from Italy, thinks that it is all subjective. He reckons that we human's have got a herd mentality.
Making his case from the red corner is Dids, who thinks that beauty is timeless. He says we're all in agreement what bad taste is - even if some people do seem to aspire to it. That'll be WAGS then!
Hovering somewhere in the middle is BoyWonder who thinks that's what's good for one person isn't necessarily good for another. He adds that "There is not doubt that beauty come in all shapes and sizes."
But does that extend to all colours and all lengths? We're not going to pass judgement, but if you've got an opinion on the subject you know where to write it...

After a consultation with stylist Dino and Colour Director Brooke, her bleached through the top and dark underneath colour was toned down and evened out as Nell wanted to update it and make it look thicker and more glamorous. Brooke tinted the top to a light brown and then added some light and dark contrasting lights to give it some texture and depth. The results will no doubt be seen on a red carpet near you soon!

Young talent is the future of the hairdressing industry, and at HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards, the Junior of the Year category recognises just that.
Every year, judges pore over hundreds of entries from ultra-enthusiastic, up-and-coming hairdressers, who have embarked on the first step of their careers. With so many budding stars to choose from, picking the candidate that shines the brightest is never easy, but those who have seized opportunities and thrown themselves into the profession with passion stand out from the crowd.
The rookie recruits who make it to the shortlist on the night are those in which HJ’s panel of experienced industry judges have seen something truly special. Many of them have gone on to achieve tremendous career success since their names flashed up on the big screens at the glittering event while others have left the industry.
And for the winners, stepping onstage to collect their prize – often to the biggest round of applause of the night – is a moment to treasure for a lifetime.

The L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy regional tour has seen 351 regional salons take their place on the competition floor, armed only with products, hairdryers and talent in their battle to win a place in the final stage of the 2008 competition.
Each Regional Final featured a stunning women’s fashion show from Central St Martins MA graduate Avsh Alom Gur with hair by the Sean Hanna Artistic Team, Haringtons Artistic Team, The FAME Team and The Daniel Galvin Artistic Team. PICTURES
A line-up of leading names, including Zoe Irwin, Errol Douglas, Richard Ward, Dylan Bradshaw, Charles Worthington, Sean Dawson, David Lambert, Jamie Brooks, Anita Cox, Karen Dodds, rotated around the judging panel throughout the tour to carefully cast their expert eye over the entries before giving their discerning professional votes.
"The team’s that have made it through to the Grand Final were deserving winners and demonstrated an excellent understanding of the brief," explained judge Alan Edwards.
"The standard of work across the competition floor has been very strong and there was a great energy from everyone involved."
Agyness Deyn inspired crops, curls and bobs dominated the winning entries, in addition to spectacular colour that ranged from baby blonde to flaming midnight. There was plenty of high fashion to accompany the sensational hair, with ruffles, chic panelling and femme fatale trends proving popular for women while tailoring and retro design details were favoured in the L'Oréal Professionnel Men’s Image category.

Who has had head-turning hair and who has had stomach-churning hair in the past seven days?
|
Burning up… |
| Gone are her anti-glamour limp locks – Gwyneth Paltrow has been papped looking every inch the Hollywood yummy mummy this week. With golden highlights, a shorter, sexy wave, and a pair of killer heels to show off her endless pins, it’s the makeover of the year so far! “I suppose it's a comeback in a way because I definitely was hibernating for a while and I feel that now I am coming back into the world," Gwynnie told the transfixed members of press. | |
| From working at her local chippie to rocking the runways, it-model Agyness Deyn has pioneered the revival of the peroxide blonde crop. No longer the preserve of dodgy ‘80s dance acts (remember Yazz anyone?) ‘the Agy’ has been mimicked by some of London’s hippest starlets from the coolest Geldof sister, Pixie, to Vivienne Westwood model and edgy actress Jaime Winstone. | |
| Yes, she’s a style icon and yes, she is gorgeous, but the ever-controversial Kate Moss has been looking less than lovely this week. What happened to that lash-skimming sexy fringe? We love Kate’s rock chick style but bedraggled, backcombed and just plain greasy is simply not nice. | |
| As La Winehouse ricochets from one drama to another, her beehive is looking more like a bird nest this week, and we fear she’s fast going to become a regular fixture on the chillier end of our hair-o-meter. OK, so the lady’s got problems, but she’s also got a team of stylists at her beck and call. Get the experts in and sort it out Amy, please! | |
| Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr… |

Award winning hairdresser, Shane Bennett hosted an open house evening at his salon in Hillsborough, County Down recently, to celebrate the opening of a new VIP suite.
Almost 600 guests attended and were treated to a stunning catwalk show, which ran three times to accommodate everyone that came.
Said Shane: “I am completely overwhelmed with the huge number of people that came to see the new VIP area and watch the catwalk show. Despite the rain people continued to queue for almost two hours so as not to miss out. Guests commented that the catwalk show was simply out of this world and want to know when the next one will be!”

When it comes to hair, big was once again beautiful on the autumn/winter 08 catwalks, with the poker straight locks that have dominated recent seasons making way for movement, volume and curls.
That transition has fast made it's way back into salons, as Lisa Shepherd, three times British Hairdressing Awards Midland Hairdresser of the Year, explains: "We are definitely seeing the return of a lot more movement in the hair in the form of soft curl which is being created using velcro rollers and tongs.
"Clients are asking for style, but aren’t necessarily asking for a perm but they are wanting the 'soft, lived-in' curl almost like a 'slept-in' look."
