New recruits of the Fellowship’s Project X '08 education programme enjoyed their first day of expert training this month, with PR, branding and presentation skills seminars.
The lucky twelve, who were auditioned and chosen before Christmas, met up at Toni&Guy Kensington, armed with a moodboard which summed up their image, their passion and their work.
The boards were then used as a tool as they took part in interactive sessions with communications expert Harriet Evans and presentation skills guru Debbie G.
Topics covered throughout the day included:
North Eastern Hairdresser of the Year Robert Eaton, who is mentoring the ’08 Project X group, said: "The skills these guys are learning on day one of the course will ensure they maximise every opportunity they get over the coming year and will help to really fast-forward their careers.
"I wish I’d learnt all of this when I was starting out."
The Project X group will meet again in February to spend a day with Mark Hayes learning about the importance of the line in modern hairdressing.
Other days planned for 2008 include photoshoots with Stuart Weston and TIGI, a creative cutting course with Mahogany and a colour inspiration day.

I had a few friends over for dinner at the weekend and we started talking about celebrities and how easily they set trends and how youngsters -- especially girls -- want to emulate their style and look.
One topic we debated was male style icons -- who has stood the test of time and who is the ultimate male style icon.
I suggested James Dean, another mentioned David Bowie and someone threw Liam Gallagher into the conversation. We all had our own ideas of what made a male style icon -- so I ask you this: Who is your male style icon and why? Ruth@HJi x

Hollywood's favourite hairstylist Tara Smith's mum and grandmother both ran a hair salon so it was only natural that she should follow in their footsteps.
After training as a make-up artist to enable her to achieve the complete look, she started assisting on films such as The Three Musketeers (working with the Brat Pack – Kiefer Sutherland and Charlie Sheen) and Hackers (as assistant hair and make-up artist to Johnny Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie) and was taken to the States after working with actress Sherilyn Fenn on Darkness Falls.
These days Tara's work consists of everything from commercials to films to magazine shoots to red-carpet hair; and regular clients include Demi Moore, Anna Friel and Marisa Tomei so she's got plenty of good advice for people hoping to take her career path.

Has anyone noticed Channel 4's ability to find one too-cool-for-school presenter after the next? The latest off the cool and quirky production line is the quite delectable Alexa Chung.
But while some of her predecessors have from time to time been accused of coming up short in the style stakes, Alexa's getting plaudits left, right and centre for her image.

An esteemed panel of judges have narrowed down hundreds of entries from around the country to produce the shortlist for this year's Clynol Awards.
The judges, including Schwarzkopf national technical manager Mark Todd, Indola technical manager Shane Meadows, and hairdressers Ross Taylor of Falltricks and Anne Veck of Anne Veck Hair, gathered at Clynol's London Academy on Monday 14th January to set about the difficult task.
Speaking about the high standard of entries, marketing specialist and fellow judge Jenny Paul said: "Young Stylist of the Year was very challenging to judge, it's so refreshing to have a new category like this, and great for salons who don't normally get involved with photography.
"Very encouraging. I love judging these awards, Clynol accounts are so free-thinking - I love it, it's right out of the box!"
The winners will be announced in March when there are some top prizes including trophies, cash prizes and tickets to major events such as the British Hairdressing Awards and the British Hairdressing Business Awards up for grabs.

A perfect combination of learning and fun was the order of the day when the Clipso group franchisees travelled to Paris for the L’Oreal Business Forum.
The trip included a day at the L’Oreal Global Headquarters in Paris, covering topics such as the changing market place, market proposals, the importance of client communication and interesting statistical comparisons with other European countries.
But when the education ended it was the perfect opportunity for a catch up and a chance to bounce some ideas off each other for the year ahead.
And there was plenty of time to explore the sites of Paris, including bonding evenings with L’Oreal representative Ben Taylor in the Buddha Bar wonderland and French cabaret the Lido.
Russell Mcgrath, salon manager of Clipso Watford, said: "The L’Oreal Business Forum trip to Paris was a fantastic team bonding weekend, full of lots of great ideas, interesting marketing proposals and lots of fun!"

Jack Lawrence of Clipso London has been selected to become an L'Oreal Professionnel ID Artist.
Jack was hand picked by L’Oréal Professionnel to work together and be trained on the latest catwalk looks, new cuts, and new products in order to then become an ambassador for L’Oréal Professionnel’s styling name tecni.art and be able to train and inspire their peers, as well as their customers.
Entry is by invitation to audition only, and the young stylists have 5–10 minutes to present a mood board of their ideas and a finished model demonstrating their colour, cut and styling skills, and to talk about the products and techniques they used to achieve the look. Jacks confident presentation stood him in good place for the position.
Jack will now attend a two-year ID Artists programme, which will include training courses with celebrity session stylist Rudi Lewis at the L’Oréal International Academy in central London. Rudi will show the latest looks hot off the catwalk as well as demonstrating which L’Oréal Professionnel tecni.art styling products to recreate these looks.
Jack and other ID artists then go out and present these looks and cuts at 'Style Labs' around the country where other stylists can attend and learn about the latest looks for this season.
Darren Fowler, director of Clipso London, concludes "I’m very proud of Jack’s invitation to become an ID Artist. The competition is very tough and even to be asked to enter is a big achievement in itself.
"These next two years will be an exciting time for Jack and he’ll receive priceless education and development. Everyone in the Clipso group is behind Jack and are keen to hear all his thoughts on upcoming trend directions."

Celebrity guests including Lesley Joseph, Cleo Rocos and A Place in the Sun's Amanda Lamb, along with a who's who of the hairdressing industry helped to raise over £10,000 for the Hair and Beauty Benevolent at the annual HABB Ball.
The event, the industry's first night of glamour of the year, marked the beginning of Racoon International's Eva Proudman's role as president of hairdressing's own charity.
She began by explaining how she herself had turned to an industry charity in her own hour of need after a car crash meant that her spine had to be fused.
Former president Jayne Lewis-Orr also delivered a reminder of the importance of the charity, by sharing the heart warming tale of Ruby, who lost her hairdresser mother Helen to breast cancer when she was just 11. HABB is paying for a school trip to New York and helping her to enjoy the same experiences as her classmates.
There were Presidents Awards for Jayne, for her work as charity president for the last three years, and Image International and Chambers Hair Design for their fundraising efforts in the past 12 months.
On the evening, huge amounts of much-needed funds were raised through a raffle, with amazing prizes including vouchers to spend in Harley Street, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols; an auction of money-can't-buy merchandise; and a silent auction that featured a Ben De Lisi dress and hairdryers designed by top hairdressers and made by Wahl.
But the biggest draw was a replica FA Cup, as won by Chelsea in 2007, which was bought be Anthony Mascolo for a whopping £2,500.
While raising money and awareness for HABB was the focus of the evening, there was still plenty of fun to be had.
Richard Ward, Marc Antoni, Akin Konizi and hob creative, Tim Hartley, Errol Douglas, Johnny Engstrom Artistic Director of Guy Kremer, Andrew Barton and the Saks Art Team, Effi Davies at Toni & Guy, Seanhanna Artistic Team and Sassoon all wowed the guests with hair shows inspired by the theme 'Fashioning the Olympics'.
And disco diva Kym Mazelle, belted out her anthems 'Young Hearts Run Free' and 'Love Me the Right Way' before the industry's own DJ, Desmond Murray took to the decks for a party.

Clipso founder Terry Calvert reveals what he just can't live without in his man bag.

For Inspiration
Vogue is great for inspiration. I often pull make-up and styling ideas from here for my trend collections.
For Work
I use my laptop to check my emails on the go and catch up on business while travelling.
For Me
I’m never without a photo of my girlfriend Lindsay and baby daughter Scarlett
For Travelling
I spend Monday and Tuesday out on the road so it’s essential I’m reachable – I always seem to be on the phone!
For Fun
My two older daughters download music for me, so I never know what’s coming next on my iPod.
For Work
As a hairdresser, I think you always have to carry scissors. My favourites are Fuji.
For Me
I always carry nuts with me – they’re a great source of protein and keep my energy levels up.
For My Hair
L’Oréal Professionnel’s tec ni.art a-head clay is a great all-rounder and my hero styling product.
For The Future
With a new baby I can’t help but want to capture every day, so a camera is essential. It’s also great to take snaps of our collections while they’re being created.

There's long been a principle that where Kate Moss goes the rest of the fashion world follow.
And that trend shows no sign of letting up with fellow super model Heidi Klum the latest to leap on the eyebrow-skimming fringe bandwagon.
In recent weeks we've also heard on our celebrity style pages just how great Tess Daly and Cheryl Cole look with their funky fringes.

Vidal Sassoon, the most influential hairdresser of all time, reflects upon some of the most iconic images of his glittering career.
![]() | "I cut this model’s hair for a show in 1961. She had great hair that worked well with our haircuts. I first did this look on Nancy Quan, which was then photographed by Terence Donovan.
We worked on shows and magazine shoots all the time – we were very lucky. We were so involved in what we were doing that it became part of the culture in London at the time." |
| "This is me with Broadway star Carol Channing in the early 60s. I created this look firstly at the Ungaro show in Paris and then flew to New York and recreated it on Carol.
My philosophy when working with designers was that I create the hair and they create the clothes; Ungaro wouldn’t let me have an input into the clothes so I wouldn’t let him have an input into the hair. It was totally my creation. After I had given this style to Carol, she appeared on stage every night for a year and got a huge amount of exposure and people started copying the look. It was a very interesting time for us; American hairdressers had no idea how to create geometric styles, although we had been doing it in the UK for four years." | ![]() |
![]() | "This was the Greek Goddess, which we created in 1967. I’d had my appendix out just before the shoot for Paula Kent at Redken, so I sat and directed Roger Thompson and Annie Humphreys as I couldn’t do it myself.
We worked all weekend to get the end result, after being inspired by curly hair we had seen in Harlem, New York. Roger cut the hair – it was one of his best haircuts – and Annie permed it. It was the first time a perm and cut hadn’t been set. I was looking at it and said leave it, that is it. It was something that just happened and we knew it was different and interesting. It appeared in The Mirror and got great coverage, then it appeared in American Vogue and everyone wanted it. It was an exciting time." |
| "Peggy Moffitt was a top model and muse for designer Rudi Gernreich. I was working in London when I received a call asking me to fly to the US to do the hair for a shoot.
I cut the hair and Peggy played up for the camera – and it worked brilliantly." | ![]() |
![]() | "I was 22 years-old here, working at Romaines on the Edgware Road in London. It was my first job after training with Silvio Camillo.
I did a lot of competition work then, which had nothing to do with fashion, but it was great as it really taught me about hair. I won a couple of competitions but I was never the best – I lost quite a few as well!" |
| "Film director Roman Polanski asked me to fly to the US to work with Mia Farrow, who was married to Frank Sinatra at the time and working on a film with Roman, Rosemary’s Baby.
I told him I would have to cancel appointments and meetings, so it would cost him $5,000. He said no problem, so I went over and did her hair in the middle of a boxing ring for a press call. It was a circus, and she couldn’t understand why they were interested in her hair when she wanted to talk about the problems and issues surrounding American Indians. I just got on with doing my thing, which received a huge amount of publicity – if I’d realised that I would have charged more!" | ![]() |
![]() | "This is me with Richard Salomon, chairman of Charles of the Ritz, who also brought YSL to New York. I was working on a shoot for Queen magazine in the early 60s, when I got a call from him asking for a meeting.
We were cutting geometric shapes, which very few people knew how to do. We had trained ourselves and worked for nine years developing these shapes, it was an extraordinary time. So, I met with Richard who had a proposition for me. He wanted me to go back to London, train a team who would go back to New York, he would buy a building on Madison Avenue, we would become partners and open the first salon in America. Talk about good luck! If the world wants something, then it will happen." |
| "This is my all time favourite style – the five point cut. It took me nine years to get it right.
"I thought I had to do something different and to me it wasn’t work, it wasn’t a hobby, it was what I lived for." | ![]() |

It would be a massive understatement to say I've been busy recently - it's been crazy!
I've spent a few days in Thailand, where I am working on an ongoing project with a salon group; helping them to build and strengthen their brand.
Unlike a lot of the work I do, this isn't straight teaching, it is more like consultation work and I am hoping to leave a lasting legacy so that they can get on with it after I finish my contract with them.
I have looked at everything from the brand to their training to the way they PR themselves and how they do their photography. I've found that their technical ability is good and specific to the region, but they hadn't looked at how they can further present themselves and develop.
So it's been a bit of a learning experience - for me as well as them - and they have faced some difficult decisions and challenges because changes have had to be made and lots of those were to do with the standards they set.
Last week, we shot their first campaign. It was something that they had spent a lot of money on and it was great to be involved.

It’s been a busy year for the winners of the L’Oréal Colour Trophy awards 2007. As part of their prize they travelled to New York to work on a Vogue photo shoot, styled the advertisements for this year’s competition, and recreated their original winning looks for the front cover of HJ.
As hopefuls gear up to enter for 2008, Maria O’Keefe of Sanrizz, L’Oréal Colour Trophy award winner, and Sara Elhaj of Toni & Guy, who – along with her partner Abby Cooper – scooped the Men’s Image award, tell us about their year so far.

Yvonne Frankel is 23 and from the Exclusive Hair Company in Belfast. She won the Young Colourist Award at last year’s L’Oréal Colour Trophy. Here is Yvonne's story

To enter the competition I had to initially send a photographic entry. This was the first shoot I had ever done so working with a professional model, photographer and make-up artist was completely new to me. I cut and coloured the hair and as a result, got through to the Northern Ireland regional final.
There were four finalists in the Northern Ireland final, then once I won that I was in the last eight for the Young Colourist category, which is in association with HJ.
The final session was held the week before the awards night, at the academy in London. I went along on the day with my model and had three-and-a-half hours to cut and colour the hair.
It went well and the judges were really nice, but I then had to wait 10 days until the big night. It was the longest 10 days ever!
The night itself was brilliant, but I was very nervous. I could not believe it when they announced that I had won, and the prize was amazing.
Part of my prize was to undertake a Colour Specialist Degree with L’Oréal Professionnel. It took me six weeks, training three days a week, but I passed it and it was fantastic. The course gave me so much knowledge – it was very intense, but really worth it.
This qualification has made such a difference to the business and personally; I am so much more confident with my colour work, and as a result clients are more confident in my ability.
I also won tickets to HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards. It was so good to watch and it was great to be in the same room as all those amazing hairdressers.
Another part of the prize was a photo shoot with Hairflair magazine. It was mentored by my hairdressing hero, Jo O’Neill from Toni & Guy. It was brilliant and Jo taught me so many techniques that I have since been using in the salon.
The final part of my prize was a place on a L’Oréal Exposure Tour, which I will be going on this year.
Winning the Young Colourist Award has ignited the spark for hairdressing and has boosted my passion for my trade. It was the first time I had entered any award and I am so pleased that I made the effort.

I took my son to karate last night and in a room full of people, we were the only ones with curly hair. No other parent had curls and neither did any of the 30 boys and girls. With his arms and legs thrashing around, the curls on his head bobbed around, but I was surprised no other child had even a kink in their hair.I Flounders calls it the devils curly hair in the Simpson's movie, but is it really? Is naturally curly hair a dying breed ? Ruth@HJi x

The stars hit the red carpet last night and brought Cool Britannia to London. The Brits celebrated the best in music -- and the winners looked good too.
Hosted by a gorgeous Kelly Osbourne who was sporting a new elfin hair cut, the evening kicked off with the eclectic Beth Ditto.
Sarah Harding wowed the crowds with a slicked back quiff, while bandmate Cheryl tweedy went back to her WAG days with long voluminous locks. Leona Lewis brought some Hollywood glamour to the cold capital and winner Mark Ronson and Kaiser Chief's fontman Ricky Wilson led the trend for side partings and slick styles. However, not everyone got it right.

While Amy Winehouse oozed cool her beehive was bigger than ever and looked like it was too heavy for her miniscule frame. Kylie sang 'wow' but her hair colour certainly wasn't -- too blonde and roots you couldn't take your eyes off.
Overall though they all looked great -- see what Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck has to say in next week's issue. Ruth@HJi x

The event, which was hosted by four-time Grammy-winning producer and Recording Academy Chair Jimmy Jam, blurs the boundaries of the fashion and music industries.
It showcased spring 08 collections from hot musical talents-turned-designers, including Beyonce’s House of Dereon, Rocawear by Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake’s William Rast and Jennifer Lopez J-Lo.
Doughty created a casual spring-y twist to complement the stylish vision of InStyle Fashion Director Hal Rubenstein.
"We were asked to create a streamline 80s feel to the hair with the use of products and the addition of extensions, mimicking the fun, carefree rock star-feel that the clothes have," says Doughty.
"A total of 30 models were prepped by an amazing team of 15 stylists made up of Future Professionals, school owners, associates and salon stylists.
"There was a great vibe in tent as everyone hustled to get the models ready."
Grammy winner Rihanna, who performed at the Salute to Fashion, says: "As a musician, you’re in the spotlight and want to make sure you always look your best. That’s where fashion comes in."

Holly Willoughby's plunging neck line on Dancing on Ice caused a bit of a stir, but when it comes to her hair, the family TV favourite plays it oh so safe.
When we asked a couple a hairdressers what they thought of her look they told us that she'd mastered a style perfect for the small screen.
"To me this style looks Dynasty-perfect for TV! It’s long and layered with a fringe, which in this shot has been pinned back. To get the look, I would roughly blow-dry, then set the hair in Velcro rollers to add wave to the ends, before pinning the fringe into a quiff. The more body you achieve the better."
Sean Fordham, FordhamWhite, London
"Holly’s golden, warm tones complement her colouring and complexion, eliminating any chance of a sallow look and enhancing her green eyes. The only negative point is the inch of regrowth at her roots. It’s vital to ensure maintenance of colour to uphold a fresh, clean look."
Paul Kemble, hob salons creative team, Hertfordshire
But what do you think? When it comes to her style is Holly dancing on thin ice or is she a perfect, umm, six?

In the decade since she burst on to our screens, the original American Beauty, Mena Suvari has sported plenty of distinctive styles – but can she pull them off ?
![]() | ![]() | ![]() | ![]() |
| 1999 | 2004 | 2005 | 2008 |
Christel Lundqvist, of hob salons, London, says that Mena's got the perfect look to carry-off most colours - though some suit her better than others.
"Mena’s complexion and colouring means she can pull off most hair shades and still look great, although I do prefer her as a blonde," says Christel.
"Going for drastic changes in style, alternating from beautiful creamy blonde shades and rich reds to elegant brown hues, transforms her appearance dramatically.
"After her ‘mature’ role in American Beauty, Mena’s red locks evoke a grown-up vampy look and style.
"Playful and soft, the lighter beige choice promotes texture and complements her delicate updo style, while working well with her natural beauty and graceful features.
"In contrast, her darker, cooler colour gives her a more sultry style and shows off her stunning eye colour to full effect.
"The perfect choice for spring/summer 2008, Mena’s latest blonde beauty reinvention is right on trend. Light and soft, this beige blonde tone is fantastic with her pretty features and is a great choice for the warmer months ahead."
Do you agree with Christel? Is blonde best for the American Beauty starlet or does dark and sultry make the most of her porcelain features? Have your say...
