Errol Douglas Awarded and MBE

Posted by Kate
Dated: January 3, 2008 4:02 PM

Celebrity hairdresser Errol Douglas has recived an MBE for services to hairdressing in the New Year's Honours List.

Errol-Douglas-MBE.jpg

Errol, whose Knightsbridge salon celebrates its 10th birthday this year, has been nominated for British Hairdresser of the Year eleven times, been entered into the Hall of Fame after winning Afro Hairdresser of the Year and won numerous other accolades in his glittering career.

Speaking about the honour, Errol said: “It’s an amazing honour to be awarded the MBE, but I've received it for my industry, not for me personally.

"It gives inspiration to young hairdressers who want to get into the profession, and it furthers what I’m doing in my industry to raise its profile as a fantastic profession to work in.

"For me, it’s all about education, passing on what I know to the people I train, and helping young people to achieve their hairdressing career dreams.”

John Terry: The Face of KOS.PRO

Posted by Kate
Dated: January 4, 2008 10:06 AM

England and Chelsea captain John Terry is the face of KOS.PRO. He tells us about his grooming routine.

JohnTerry.jpg

How would you sum up your style?

JT: Classic and simple. I love a well-tailored suit together with a pressed shirt and freshly shaven face. I’ll then put a bit of wax in my hair and I’m ready to go.

Do you feel under pressure to look good when you go out?

JT: At Chelsea FC, we all take pride in our appearance when we go out. I love wearing a good suit and always feel smart with one on. I wouldn’t say there’s huge pressure for footballers to dress up – we’re all individuals and like different styles and trends, so tend to wear whatever we feel comfortable in.

How important is image to footballers?

JT: We all like to take care of our appearance. Being in the public eye some footballers think about it more than others. I would like to think I would dress the same whether I was a footballer or in another job.

How important is it to you to look good, not only as a sportsman but as a fully fledged celebrity?

JT: I’m not a celebrity, I’m a footballer and while I care about my appearance my performance on the pitch takes precedence. It’s up to the individual as to how far a man should go with his grooming. My routine for getting ready during the day rarely changes and is low maintenance, like most blokes.

Are you aware that young men may copy your style?

JT: I take my responsibility as England and Chelsea captain very seriously as I know a lot of young boys look up to me, but I wouldn’t say I was a great style leader like David Beckham. I tend to keep my style quite simple, classic – I’ll never wear anything too outrageous.

Do the England/Chelsea team compare and swap products?

JT: The boys love the fact that I’m working with a grooming company as it keeps them in shaving and haircare products!

Who do you admire for their style and why?

JT: David Beckham’s an incredibly stylish guy, he always looks smart and can carry off many different looks.

You are the face for KOS.PRO and you’ve tried the whole range. What’s your hero product?

JT: The KOS.PRO Shave Gel is brilliant. I swear by it as it gives a smooth, comfortable and close shave that doesn’t irritate my skin; no shaving rash or bumps.

Time For Change: New Year's Resolutions

Posted by

Dated: January 4, 2008 12:49 PM

Dated: January 4, 2008 12:49 PM

January is the perfect time to set targets and objectives for the coming year. We asked a selection of hairdressers what their new year's resolutions are...

NY-Jon-McLeod.jpg
"I always like to set one word or phrase every year, which is our business focus for the year. 2007 was the year of learning, looking at what we have learnt in 20 years of business, examining all aspects of the business and documenting all we have experienced. This year is about passing on that learning to the current and future management team – the year of sharing wisdom."
Jon MacLeod, Paterson SA, Edinburgh

NY-Toby-Dicker.jpg
"My new year’s resolution is to never think that the job is done. The day you think you have made it is the first day of your decline. Always remember our finest achievements have not even been dreamt of yet."
Toby Dicker, The Chapel, Tunbridge Wells, Kent

NY-Peter-Crown.jpg
"Our new year business resolution is to improve the client experience at all our salons, before, during and after their visit. We are going to actively work on all these areas so it’s easier to follow a system for the staff members when it’s in place. We will be looking at promotions, using the database to its full potential, client interaction and getting to know our clients better. We are also going to have a major push on mystery shopping this year. We plan on sending a mystery shopper to each salon at least once a month – more if we feel it’s necessary. The purpose of the mystery shoppers is to help our businesses increase sales and improve employee customer service awareness."
Peter Crown, Lookfantastic, West Sussex

NY-Stewarts.jpg
"Our new year business resolution is to bring more awareness to the Hair & Beauty Benevolent within our team and continue to support this significant charity."
HJ’s 2007 Business Directors of the Year, Alan and Linda Stewart, Rainbow Room International, Glasgow

NY-Paul-Merritt.jpg
"The past two years at Bloww have taught me a lot and have been really, really hard work. However, now we’ve celebrated our two-year anniversary, my resolution is going to be to start enjoying it – really pushing the brand forward in terms of creativity and excellence. It’s going to be a good year."
Paul Merritt, Bloww, London

NY-Mark-Woolley.jpg
"2007 was a great year for us – business was up, we won some awards and presented at some great events. I’ve got a few focuses for 2008. One is to expand the creative side of the business, we’ve created an internal artistic team so I’m keen to get them out there presenting and shooting. Also, I’m planning to open a concept salon in Central London."
Mark Woolley, Saks Hair & Beauty, Brighton

Ny-Anne-Veck.jpg"We want to become the destination salons in Oxfordshire for beautiful hair and sophisticated service and communicate this with our radically new corporate image. We want to increase our retailing from 10% to more than 15% with the opening of a new retail boutique at our Bicester salon, and reward our high achievers and motivate the rest of the team at the Anne Veck Hair Awards. We also want to take our colour service to the next level, with two colourists aiming to complete the Wella Master Colour Programme and become Wella Master Colour Experts during 2008."
Anne Veck, Anne Veck, Oxford

NY-Tracey-Devine.jpg
"2008 starts a new era in training in our salon. We are switching from college day release to full in-house training led by myself and three of my top team members. It should be more motivating and much more intense."
Tracey Devine, Angels, Aberdeen

NY-Paul-Simbler.jpg"I have three resolutions for 2008. Resolution one: I would like to concentrate on reducing costs and expenditure. Although we had budgets in place for the year, having expanded the company quite rapidly through the opening of numerous salons and the launch of our state-of-the-art academy in Camden, we have exceeded our planned budget. This, compounded by a possible recession, means that we are resolving to ensure that our budgets for the coming year are met and not exceeded. Resolution two: Having only launched our London training academy in July 2007, we are focused on putting more time and energy into increasing student bookings for 2008, so that we are able to educate more people, helping them to enjoy greater success in their own salons and businesses. Resolution three: In the coming year I would like to be able to spend more time in the salon. Having increased the number of office-based staff, I hope to have time to get back into our salons, coaching our managers and helping progress our franchised and company-owned salons to get them all to the next level."
Paul Simbler, hob salons, London and Hertfordshire

NY-Sean-hanna.jpg
"My new year’s resolution is to ensure that some of our companies are restructured to maximise current tax legislation. The chancellor has indicated that he is making quite dramatic changes to UK taper relief at the next budget and we have only a few months to crystallise our current position. It’s boring I know, but needs to be done as it will have a massive impact."
Sean Hanna, seanhanna, London

NY-Darren-Messias.jpg
"After a highly successful, award-winning 2007, Keith Hall Hairdressing has an exciting 12 months ahead. We have traditionally grown organically, giving staff the opportunity to become franchisees. We hope to open more salons in 2008. At the same time three or four of our salons will enjoy major refits."
Darren Messias, Keith Hall Hairdressing, Midlands

NY-Terry-Calvert.jpg
"2007 was hectic – I was working with the F.A.M.E. team again, opened a salon in Brighton, relocated the London salon, launched a retail website, my fiancée had a baby and we moved house! So, 2008 will see me consolidate this, maximise profit and turnover across the salon group, continue to grow the website and get everything ready for the next move forward in 2009."
Terry Calvert, Clipso, London

NY-Philip-Bell.jpg
"In 2008, we want to continue to develop our training programme and develop the skills of our team, especially our young trainees as we believe they are the future of Ishoka."
Philip Bell, Ishoka, Aberdeen

Do you have a new year's resolution? Why not discuss it with other hairdressers on the My HJi forums?

Rested, Relaxed and Raring To Go - Andrew

Dated: January 4, 2008 4:11 PM

I hope everyone had a tremendous Christmas and brilliant new year.

When we get back to work in the first weeks of January, it’s a little like one of those aftermath scenes from a movie - everyone feels a little shell-shocked.

Andrew-on-holiday.jpg
Fresh back from my holidays in the sun, which was obviously paradise - how could one of those water bungalows in the Indian Ocean not be? - and thankfully I’ve not had to start the new year with a dreaded resolution!

What with yoga in the morning, Thai Chai in the afternoon, plenty of massages (all in the name of research, of course) and far too much swimming, I’m feeling the best I’ve felt in a long time!

Mark my words; I’m going to need it, though.

Hairdressing can be theatrical

Dated: January 7, 2008 9:40 AM

Dated: January 7, 2008 9:40 AM

Happy New Year! So, I hope you all had a good break. Like many others, I suffered from the flu and spent most of my holiday on the sofa under a blanket with Night Nurse for comfort. However, I did manage to také my children to see Wicked at the Apollo Theatre in London. It was one of the best shows I have seen, and the theatrics and costumes were outstanding.
Working behind-the-scenes on a theatre production is just one career choice -- and one often forgotten -- but what satisfaction, to be so creative and have the ability to take hundreds of people every night to a different world and help them believe that what they are seeing is totally true. The Facts About HABB

Posted by

Posted by Kate
Dated: January 8, 2008 9:28 AM

Dated: January 8, 2008 9:28 AM

What Is HABB?

The Hair & Beauty Benevolent charity, established in 1853, is dedicated to helping professionals in the hair and beauty industry, and their families, if they find themselves facing hard times due to ill health, bereavement or injury.

Who Runs It?

HABB is managed by three committees:
  • a finance committee that co-ordinate the funds
  • a fundraising committee that helps to raise the charity’s profile, membership and funds
  • a management committee that decides how the money should be spent.

What Are Its Aims?

HABB helps those in need by providing special equipment and house modifications, as well as furniture and equipment specifically designed to help disabled hairdressers continue working. Through its Children’s Fund, HABB also provides equipment for disabled children, as well as essentials like school uniforms, beds and bedding. Pocket money, holidays, clothing and birthday and Christmas gifts are also donated.

How Can You Get Involved?

There are number of ways to show your support, but becoming a member is the ideal first step. You can also set up your own fundraising initiatives or get involved in HABB’s organised events such as the HABB Year Book, the HABB Ball, HABB Day or the HABB Seminars.

Alternatively, if you’re a manufacturer you can become a HABB sponsor and receive branding and recognition at events, in the Year Book or on the website, while also helping HABB beneficiaries.

What Do People Say About HABB?

"Without HABB and without the support and contribution of the entire hair and beauty industry over the years, thousands of men, women and children would not have had their lives made more bearable during some of their most desperate times." Trevor Sorbie

"The support HABB gives many people in our industry each year is invaluable, and for those who have come across difficult times, the assistance that it gives can truly make a difference to hairdressers’ lives. The L’Oréal Professional Products Division has been committed to HABB for many years, and it will continue to be one of our key charities long into the future, because we know it changes lives."
Martin Smith, managing director, L’Oréal Professionnel Products Division

"HABB is all about our industry. It’s all about helping hairdressers and beauty therapists when they need it. HABB is a way of helping each other."
Allison Kirkby, managing director, Wella Professionals

How Can You Become a Member?

The charity has various membership packages to suit different levels of support:
  • £10 donation membership
  • £25 full membership for individuals
  • £50 salon membership for salons with more than 10 staff
  • £250 corporate membership for nationwide salons, manufacturers or companies in the hair or beauty industry.

Dated: January 8, 2008 4:57 PM

The Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa held their annual 'Apprentice of the Year' competition which culminated in their very own end of year fashion show!

Richard-Ward-Show.jpg

The competition was open to all the 17 juniors from the salon. Senior stylists then voted based on the dedication, potential and progress made by the juniors over the course of 2007.

Richard-Ward-Show3.jpgSecond year trainee Joey Wheeler, who has been working at the salon for just over a year, won the coveted prize and was awarded an engraved trophy. He said: "I am so overwhelmed and shocked to have won as I really wasn’t expecting it. As I was collecting my trophy from Richard and Hellen, I could see my mum crying in the background!"

The fashion show gave the juniors an opportunity to showcase their talents. As well as selecting their own theme, which varied from 'Runaway Bride' to 'Rock Chick', the juniors styled the models' hair and clothes; organized makeup and even choreographed the models.

Nando Lopes, Training Director and Artistic Team Member who organised the competition said: "The night was a dream, I never imagined that the fashion show would go that well, with the juniors having no experience in putting on shows but they did us all proud.

"I am really impressed with them all. It was a great night."

Hairdressers To Look Out For In 2008

Posted by

Posted by Kate
Dated: January 8, 2008 5:03 PM

Dated: January 8, 2008 5:03 PM

Hairdressing never stands still - and 2008 will be no exception. But who are the people you'll be hearing about in the coming 12 months? These are our predictions...

Leah-Walton-08.jpg
Nineteen-year-old Leah Walton from The Colour Room in Stockport won Junior of the Year at HJ’s 2007 British Hairdressing Business Awards. She’s been building up a strong reputation locally as an exceptional colourist, and has recently been promoted to The Colour Room’s technical director. Leah has been involved in makeovers for consumer magazines, has done some stage work for a major beauty event in Manchester, and was a regional finalist for Wella Professionals Trend Vision 07. She also won The Colour Room’s 2007 Employee of the Year award.

Paul Ferguson from Hooker & Young in County Durham has been hairdressing for seven years and was a first-time finalist for North Eastern Hairdresser of the Year at HJ’s 2007 British Hairdressing Awards. Paul plays a significant role in the Hooker & Young artistic team, and was a popular presenter on the Hairaisers stage at Salon International last year. His photographic collections are in demand and hair shows worldwide have requested Paul’s appearance over the past 12 months.

Sam-Burnett-08.jpg
Sam Burnett is a member of the Rush artistic team, and a well-known character within the industry. Also known as Sammy B, he won Newcomer of the Year at HJ’s 2003 British Hairdressing Awards. In 2004, he became a member of The Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s F.A.M.E. team and in 2005 was part of the winning art team at the HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards. As well as being an educator for Goldwell and Rush, Sam is also the joint partner of Rush in Walton-on-Thames in Surrey.

Emma Hodgkins of Toni & Guy Sloane Square, London, has been with the company for 10 years. After winning the Wella Professionals Trend Vision Award 2007 in October, Emma’s career is set to rise significantly. For now she is focusing on making the most of her award and building up her portfolio of work. She hopes she will inspire other young people to follow a career in hairdressing.

anna-chapman-08.jpg
Anna Chapman at Trevor Sorbie has been hairdressing for four years and is the current Newcomer of the Year. Anna is 23 and a stylist at the Trevor Sorbie salon in Brighton. She has built a strong customer base and has developed her artistic skills and is making her mark on the UK hairdressing scene.

Emma Steven at Lisa Shepherd in Sutton Coldfield is the company’s first franchisee. She’s causing quite a stir in the Midlands as she’s not only running a successful salon, but was also the winner of Clynol’s 2006 Image of the Year award and 2006 Newcomer of the Year at HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards.

GEMMA-hensman-08.jpg
Gemma Hensman is the director of Hensmans Salons in Northampton and Milton Keynes. She began her career at her parents’ salon, Changes, in 1999, and has recently been appointed director of the salons which have been rebranded to Hensmans. Gemma has a real passion for training and has a long list of qualifications to her name. She has been on the Schwarzkopf Professional Young Artistic Team for two consecutive years and, along with her team, has won the Schwarzkopf Professional Creative Team competitions four times. She also heads up the University of Northampton Fashion and Textiles Department.

Phil Downing from the Mark Scott salon in Derby was a dynamic member of the 2007 TIGI Inspirational Youth Team, where he presented on stage at Salon International. Phil has excellent presentation skills and produces first-class hair work, and, as a result, has also become a TIGI Ambassador. This has meant he’s been out to TIGI salons teaching product knowledge and supporting its regional educational team. All this and he is still only 21.

Jason-Welch-08.jpg
Jason Welch from Eleven Hair in London is fast building a reputation as a colourist. Jason is a Redken Platform Artist and his session styling credits include shows for the BBC and Channel 4. He has also worked backstage at Fashion Week in Milan and London. As his photo shoots and credits grow, Jason is one to watch in 2008.

Amanda Brooke began her hairdressing career at Hair Associates in Taunton, Somerset, where she completed her training in just one year and subsequently became a member of the Hair Associates Creative Division. She has won the Hair Associates Top Stylist award for the past two years and remains the group’s top taker each week. Amanda became a member of the KMS California UK art team in 2006 and has represented it internationally. Ultimately, her ambition is to become an industry leader.

Maria O’Keefe from Sanrizz, London, was the 2007 L’Oréal Colour Trophy winner. She has been hairdressing for 20 years and is the international artistic director for Sanrizz. Since winning, Maria is now sharing her expertise across the Sanrizz group and her colour work is definitely worth watching out for.

Hair Product Trends For 2008

Posted by

Posted by Kate
Dated: January 9, 2008 4:00 PM

Dated: January 9, 2008 4:00 PM

Hairdressing never stands still - and 2008 will be no exception. But what type of products will be hitting our salons in the coming 12 months? Here's what the experts think...

Lois Aspinall, marketing manager, Clynol
"Women want sexy, voluminous hair with so much shine that it gives a mirror-like reflection. Our customers are over the grungy, just-got-of-bed look. They want hair that makes a statement, and 2008 will see an array of products to help them do just that. It’s going to be a big year for shine sprays and serums. We are also seeing an increased demand for dual-action products, so we are creating multi-purpose products such as sprays that give shine and hold."

Jane Barnett, hair and scalp specialist for Kérastase
"The product trends for 2008 will move towards people being more aware of their scalp and how important it is to have a healthy, balanced scalp to ensure beautiful hair. We don’t always get a balanced diet, drink enough water or get the right amount of sleep which can affect our scalp, and ultimately our hair, plus external aggressors such as free radicals, pollution, and air conditioning take their toll. For these reasons I think we will see a bigger consumer interest in specific products for scalp needs."

Anya Haarhoff, marketing manager, L’Oréal Professionnel
"For 2008, natural is a key theme. From haircare products with organic and botanical ingredients to products infused with a cocktail of vitamins, healthy hair is a priority. This trend continues through to colour and there is a move towards subtle, gentle shades seeing a tendency towards minimalism and coolness. Look forward to a year of healthy, glossy, and beautiful hair."

Terry Sierocki, CEO, Sabre
"Frizzy, unkempt hair is something customers are keen to tackle and banish for good this year. A number of our brands are launching products that will create either permanent smooth hair or provide moisture for those really tortured locks. Men’s grooming is exploding in 2008 and you’ll see a big move towards this in product innovations."

Anthony Mascolo, international creative director, TIGI
"In recent years, there has been a huge growth in the men’s hairdressing market. We’ve found that both in the UK and globally men are increasingly interested in their appearance and image. In general, we’ve found that the contemporary male wants to have a low-maintenance look, but that doesn’t mean that he is afraid to use products, so I predict men’s styling and finishing products will be big news for 2008."

Jackie Pike, group product manager – customer brands, Wella Professionals
"In 2008, hair will be natural, shiny and healthy. Colour will be a key part to any cut and there will be hints of subtle tones of cool blondes right through to deep brunettes and vibrant reds. Popular finishing products for 2008 will be those that give a perfect and groomed result, but still enhance colour like gloss sprays, heat and colour protection products. Care products are again all about adding moisture and conditioning properties into the hair cuticle to give that luminous end result. Shampoos, conditioners and treatments will all have the same end result – beautiful, vibrant colour and perfectly conditioned locks."

Hairstyle Trends for 2008 - Predictions

Posted by

Posted by Kate
Dated: January 10, 2008 2:01 PM

Dated: January 10, 2008 2:01 PM

Hairdressing never stands still - and 2008 will be no exception. But what key trends will we be seeing on the catwalk? Here's what the experts think...

Beverly-C3.jpg
"The big story for 2008 will be short hair for women. The trend will have a retro 1920s feel with hair cropped short with an androgynous edge; not masculine but rather highly glamorous. Bobs will be shattered and more dressed next year. In fact, all hair will have a really dressed feel as we see the return of blow-drying, finger waves and heated rollers. Men’s hair will also have a retro feel, with a return of the ‘college boy’ look. Cuts will be very precise and groomed, but still retain texture. Shine, texture, glamour and precision are going to be the buzzwords."
Beverly C

“I think 2008 will be all about volume and condition, and hair will have gorgeous texture and shine. Big volume and glamour will be big news so texturising products will be too, enabling people to build volume and that backcombed look without the damaging side effects.”
Steven Goldsworthy, Goldsworthy’s, Swindon

Antionette-Beendeers-3.jpg
"In 2008, the focus will be on texture. The trend will move away from straight styles and move towards volume and curls. Styles will be matte with volume on top with a resurgence of 80s style."
Antoinette Beenders, global creative director, Aveda

"Hair is rougher, with a matte finish. We’re using products to take down shine and give hair a second-day look. We’re seeing everything from full and exaggerated shapes, to interpretations of classic 40s and even natural, unfinished, understated looks. Volume will be a key player, but what makes it fresh for 2008 is where you place it. Instead of placing height up-front, hair will be lifted at the nape and crown and teased at the sides."
Guido Palau, session stylist

angelo-seminara3.jpg
"For the coming season hair will be natural, beautiful, simple and well-groomed. Crops, like the one sported by model Agyness Deyn, epitomise the look of the moment. The Posh Spice look is over, and shorter, sexy looks are definitely in."
HJ’s 2007 British Hairdresser of the Year, Angelo Seminara, Trevor Sorbie, London

"If you’re blonde, you’ll be in fashion for 2008. I predict we’ll see more tonal blondes, with less of the full bleach look. Oyster and champagne tones will give blondes a warmer look, which is set to be big."
Josh Wood, Real Hair, London

"Wavy, textured hair will become even stronger. Think deep finger-waves with shiny finishes. Setting and tonging are coming back with a vengeance. Sophisticated, natural chignons and ponytails will be big and hair accessories will continue to be on trend. We’ll be seeing heavy, wide fringes of varying lengths; also brunettes and strong beige blondes will be prominent."
Charlotte Murray, session stylist

'Go Back To Black' Hairdressers Tell Amy

Posted by

Dated: January 10, 2008 3:17 PM

Dated: January 10, 2008 3:17 PM

Amy Winehouse's beehive was one of the iconic hairstyles of 2007 - but the pop icon has ditched the look for the new year.

As well as having her black locks dyed blonde, she's had her long hair cut off, although so far she's somewhat hidden the new style under a head scarf.

Amy-Winehouse-blonde.jpg

According to the red-tops Amy says she's gone for the change she said 'I felt like it', which is as good a reason as any, but we're still not convinced that the new tone is the best for the troubled star and we're not the only ones to say so...

Richard Ward of the Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa feels that the 'trailer park' blonde completely misses the mark.

He told BBC Radio Five Live: "Amy should take her own advice and go 'Back to Black! From the press photos, it's hard to see what she's done cut wise under the headscarf, but colour-wise she's far too dark to attempt this light blonde colour.

"You can see from her eyebrows how naturally dark her base is, and it's foolish to think she can go as light as this without going for a crop a la Agyness Deyn. This colour is trashy - trailer park blonde!

"Clearly Amy Winehouse is a woman who loves pushing her look to the extreme - but this is way off the mark. While she's at it, the eyeliner could do with some work too!"

Yesmin O’Brien, creative director at seanhanna feels that Amy will have a tough time managing her new look.

She added: "Amy’s been in a bad way for a while, so maybe she’s been persuaded to believe the myth that blondes have more fun!"

"Unfortunately the tones are still rather yellow. To lift her hair colour that much is very difficult – and I’m afraid she won’t be having a lot of fun with her hair if she doesn’t look after it… such a drastic colour change is high maintenance. Amy will need to find some time to lavish some attention on it!

"When her hair was dark she could get away with her unkempt, messed-up beehive, but now she’s blonde, I fear that is not going to work well at all!"

Sean Fordham at FordhamWhite is another hairdresser with a simple message for Amy: "Bring back the dark haired soul diva that we all know and love!", he says

If you'd like to have your say on the Amy goes blonde debate, join in the chat on the My HJI forum. In the meantime, our last word on the subject is that this is the perfect reminder that anyone considering a colour change should be reminded that they might need to amend their make-up to complement the look!

Hairdressers Best For Customer Service

Dated: January 11, 2008 12:51 PM

Not only are hairdressers among the happiest in their careers, but they are also the top dog when it comes to keeping their clients happy!

A major new study asked 6,000 people to score industries on the things that are most important to consumers, including professionalism, complaint-handling, quality and competence, and friendliness of staff.

Each of the professions were then rated on a UK Customer Satisfaction Index and hairdressers came out on top, scoring an impressive 84 out of 100.

The hair industry is now bring held up as a benchmark that other professions should learn from.

Robert Crawford, executive director of ICS who ran the survey, says: "It all goes to confirm what we already know – that hairdressers have a well-earned reputation for giving friendly, skilful and highly individual attention and advice."

"There are many companies and organisations out there that would do well to follow their example. There is no reason why the attributes displayed by small enterprises like hairdressers cannot transfer to larger organisations."

Just in case you're wondering, estate agents came bottom of the pile. Join the debate on who give the best and worst customer service on the My HJi forum.

I watched The Kate Moss Years on Channel Five this week and while Kate has constantly changed her look, she has also stuck to what suits her.

While the media salute her new-look heavy fringe, it is a look she has had before -- in 1995 when she was on the arm of former beau Johnny Depp.

It just goes to show that nothing is as new as it seems, and even style icons revisit their past.

A Shiny Happy Start to 2008 - Andrew Barton

Dated: January 14, 2008 11:06 AM

Dated: January 14, 2008 11:06 AM

The start of 2008 has been a real buzz. I've got a lot on but I'm feeling amazing thanks to my healthy new habits: a new exercise regime, a healthy eating campaign and I'm off the booze.

I haven't actually given up alcohol full-stop, but I am stopping the terrible habit I'd got in to of coming home from work and opening a bottle of wine.

The problem with having a couple glasses of wine in the evening is that you pile on the pounds, you feel less comfortable and you have less energy - and right now I am so busy that I need as much energy as I can get.

At the moment, there's lots happening on Shiny Happy Hair, which has a press launch later in the week and goes live in Asda stores in the middle of February.

Andrew-Barton-product-range.jpg

So far I have done three makeovers for the range and they've been well received so I am really excited about the whole world knowing about it because it is something new that looks and feels different in the market.

Most hairdressers who launch their own product range sell their name for a royalty of the licence, but I am funding it myself so that I own the brand, which means that it has been my creation from the forumulation to the fragrance, design and marketing philosophy.

With 25 years of knowledge of women's hair and tons of experience of working alongside manufacturers from Tigi to Kerastase I know the types of products that consumers are looking for and I wanted to take a no-nonsense approach that cut the bull-shit and reflected my personality.

Despite the fact I am launching my own range I still heavily endorse the prescriptive elements of professional hair care. I wanted a brand and range with the hallmarks of professional products that was available to everyone and didn't attract the price tag sometimes associated with professional products.

As well as working on Shiny Happy Hair, I have had my usual busy schedule with Saks and have had a different head on every morning.

It's a crucial time for communicating and educating the new collection and we're also introducing the new art team members. We have to give them an induction that is tailored to their specific needs and helps us to find out where they are at and get the best out of them.

As always they are exciting times. I'll have plenty more to tell you about next week.

Robertlobetta.jpg
I've just spent the night with Robert Lobetta -- and he took me to places no hairdresser has taken me before!

An Evening with Robert Lobetta was held by the Fellowship for British Hairdressing at the Wella World Studio in London.

Robert, one of the most creative hairdressers of his generation, talked candidly about his life and career, the ups and downs, the importance of having a vision -- and what makes a vision --collaborations with people in and outside the industry and how he turned his mistakes into his advantage.

For over an hour the star-studded audience were held captivated, with names such as Errol Douglas, Tim Hartley, Joshua Galvin, Sean Hanna, Paul Merritt and Gary Hooker and Michael Young awe-struck at his honesty, integrity and passion.

As the evening finished with a Q&A section, young Ross Taylor from Paul Falltrick asked if he could assist Robert on a shoot -- and Robert said yes, leaving eveyone in the audience wishing they had asked the same question! It truly was a night to remember -- especially for Ross. Watch this space and we'll let you know how he got on. Ruth @HJi

Happy 80th Birthday to Vidal Sassoon

Dated: January 16, 2008 4:44 PM

Vidal-Sassoon.jpg
Hairdressing legend Vidal Sassoon celebrated his 80th birthday on January 17.

In a career spanning more than five decades, Vidal has shaped British hairdressing and become an international icon for the industry.

Starting out from humble beginnings, Vidal was sent to work in a barbers at the age of 14.

He took time out from his promising career to fight in Israel's War of Independance before returning to the UK to create the look that defined the swinging 60s.

As his long-time friend Harold Leighton explains: "His work changed the format and idea of how hair would be cut and styled for the coming generations of hairdressers.

"The cut became the most important part now of having ones hair attended to and hair could swing and blow in the wind. It was a time for sharp lines, but hair fell back into shape without spray, there were no teasing or hair nets.

"Vidal created this new look on the best faces around, like Grace Coddington (now creative director Vogue USA) and Mary Quant. Most famously, he cut actress Mia Farrow's hair to a short gamine for the movie, "Rosemary's Baby" and the world took notice."

As well as creating iconic hairstyles, his training and the Sassoon Academy have helped to bring to fruition some of hairdressing's modern day icons and they are all quick to play tribute to the great man on his 80th birthday.

“There are so many facets to Vidal Sassoon. He is a diamond. Brilliant, both in mind and eye for the future. Strong in health and spirit. Immaculate in looks and lifestyle. This man gave us all what we are today with the leadership of British hairdressing world wide. I am proud to have known him for 47 years, both in work and friendship. He is very dear to me.
80 years young - Vidal, Mazeltov!” Joshua Galvin

"Vidal Sassoon is still the greatest hairdressing inspiration there has ever been, or perhaps ever will be. He is the person who represents the very best in hairdressing worldwide. He changed the face of hairdressing. He will always be my mentor." Trevor Sorbie

"I think Vidal Sassoon totally deserves his status. He had tremendous vision and focus and he created something that no one had ever done before – and it was achieved by working very hard and giving opportunity to others. We can all learn so much from him." Anthony Mascolo.

Vidal warrants all the praise and love from the hair and fashion, world product companies and electrical goods manufacturers around the world that he achieves to this day, long may he reign! Harold Leighton

If you'd like to add a comment about Vidal's career in the box below, we may publish it alongside the thoughts of some of the biggest names in the hair industry in the Hairdressers Journal on February 8.

Alternatively, join the debate about whether Vidal Sassoon's five-point cut is the best hairstyle of all time on the My HJi forums.

What's In Robert Eaton's Bag?

HJ’s 2007 North Eastern Hairdresser of the Year Robert Eaton, of Russell Easton, Barnsley, West Yorkshire, reveals what’s in his man-bag.

Robert-Eaton-08.jpg

  • I get inspiration for shows and shoots from glossy magazines including Vogue and i-D.
  • I feel I live on trains at the moment so I’m never without my iPod. I like The Klaxons and Kings of Leon.
  • I keep a comb and scissors, plus a bag of sectioning clips, with me all the time. You never know when you’re going to need them.
  • My mobile phone is essential because I’m always getting calls relating to work. I also like to keep in touch with friends by texting them.
  • I have a sweet tooth so chocolate is always in my bag. My favourite is a Mars bar.
  • I think it is really important to smell great so I always have aftershave with me. My favourite is Hugo Boss.
  • L’Oréal Professionnel tecni.art a-head clay is one of my favourite products at the moment, it defines any style.
  • I’m on the phone so much, the battery is always running low. I take my charger with me to charge the power up on the train.
  • I’d be lost without my diary. I’ve always got something going on either with training, seminars, photo shoots or press days.

Have Your Say On Gok Wan's Look

Gok Wan is the king of showing women How To Look Good Naked, but is the style guru's own look up to scratch?

The hairdressers we spoke to told us that as cool as Gok's image is, there's some work to be done when it comes to his quirky hair style.

    Gok-Wan.jpg

"Gok looks great, but I think he could be a little more adventurous. Although his hair colour does suit his complexion, it would be great to introduce a stronger placement of colour. This would prove difficult because of his dark base, but he could cheat with some coloured hair extensions. Because he is a flamboyant character, he could carry it off."
    Jo Jordan, Jordan Burr, London

"Gok's managed to mould an 80s New Romantic look into quite an individual, signature haircut which generally, I like. Gok seems to be quite a neat and tidy person and the cut reflects this, but personally I would add a little product and rough it up a bit."
    Paul Merritt, Bloww, London

If you could get your hands on Goks' locks, how do you think you would change it? We'd love to hear your thoughts on how you could make him look better...

I walked past La Perla on Bond Street at the weekend which appears to be undergoing a refurbishment.

But instead of the usual greased windows, or hiding behind a window of brown paper, the window was covered with press cuttings and media coverage the brand has had over the past year.

What a great way of shouting about your achievements while you are closed. It certainly caught my eye -- why don't you try it next time you want to cover your window? Ruth @HJI x

Cheryl Cole's Style: A Hit Or A Miss?

Life must be terrible if you're Cheryl Cole...a member of the country's most popular girl group, Girls Aloud; married to England footballer Ashley Cole and voted 7th sexiest female in the whole world by Lads mag FHM.

But what of Cheryl's look? We spoke to a couple of top hairdressers about the geordie lass's image and surprise, surprise, they think she's got that spot on too. Can the girl do no wrong?

    Cheryl-Cole.jpg

Here's what the stylists had to say:

"Cheryl has kept her look natural with a translucent light ash brown colour. This gives a high-gloss shine, which helps keep her hair in great condition and gives her a flattering, feminine look. The colour would suit anyone with dark eyes and dark skin or a natural tan."
Jackie O’Sullivan, O’Sullivan Concept Salons, London

"What stands out for me is the strength of her whole look – it's cut as a full fringe with no compromise. To achieve this look, give the fringe a substantial amount of thickness by bringing the front sections forward. It needs to have a bit of weight to get it to sit neatly and make a style statement. You need to look out for the hairline, taking into consideration the texture of the hair, whether it has curls or how it's going to fall if it has an awkward kink. Remember, this style will shorten the face and draw more attention to the eyes, nose and jawline."
    Tony Stavrou, Mowgli Haircutters, London

Now as much as we love a success strory, we're starting to feel a little on the jealous side, so if there is anything, seriously ANYTHING, that you think Cheryl could do to improve her luscious locks add your comments below.

Also, visit the My HJi forums to join the debate about whether Cheryl has the hottest hair in celebrity land.

Last week was a lovely - but slightly manic - week for me because I spent three days in the salon working with clients.

I love the variation of putting on a different hat each day and always having different challenges to face, but I enjoy my days in the salon over and above anything else.

It is so rewarding and there is nothing like seeing clients with a big grin on their face when you finish - that smile is quite addictive and what my job is all about.

At the moment, I am booked right up to August and when a client arrives at the salon they have often already got their next visit in eight weeks time booked.

In between appointments with me, I recommend that they visit other colleagues in the salon, and it isn't unusual for me to only see some of my clients two or three times a year.

The Cost Of Good Hair Days

    Dated: January 24, 2008 10:33 AM

    Dated: January 24, 2008 10:33 AM

Great looking hair is so important to the average woman that she invests £27,722 on her locks in her adult life.

In London, where the average cost of a cut is £65, that figure is even higher at £54,740, while ladies in the Welsh capital, Cardiff are close behind, spending £48,552 in their lifetime.

The bill, which is higher than the average annual wage, consists of trips to the salon and buying shampoo, conditioner, electrical equipment, brushes and styling products.

As well as money, women invest a significant amount of time in getting their style right, with the average woman spending nearly two hours a week - that's four days a year! - washing, blow drying and styling their hair.

Sadly, men are lagging behind when it comes to investing in their hair.

The average guy spends just £218 a year - or £12,696 in his lifetime - and less than 40 minutes in front of his mirror.

Are you surprised by these findings? Did you think that the noughties guy was more dedicated to getting his look right? What does your average client spend per visit? Join the debate on the My HJi forums.

Hello, long time no speak! All the excitement of Christmas and New Year really took its toll on me and I was completely wiped out for over a week, but I'm finally back in action now.

This is a very strange time of year in the salon. During the build up to Christmas it felt like you didn't have a moment to think and now it's really quiet.

The steady stream of clients coming in don't seem to be up for anything dramatic either. I think that's partly down to post-Christmas funds and partly down to the fact that nothing new seems to be happening in fashion at the moment; it all feels like a bit of a continuation at the moment.

    Shay Dempsey Uncovered

    Posted by

    Posted by Kate
    Dated: January 27, 2008 4:51 PM

    Dated: January 27, 2008 4:51 PM

Shay Dempsey has been in the industry for more than 20 years and is one of the most recognised hairdressers in Ireland.

    Shay-Dempsey.jpg

    Tell us about yourself...

Shay Dempsey: I started my career more than 20 years ago under the guidance of my cousin Norma Jacob, a London-based hairdresser who gave me my first scissors while cutting my family’s hair in my kitchen in Dublin.

After training, I returned to Ireland to open my first salon in Dublin’s city centre. It was a small salon, with just six styling units. But it was very cool for its time, with televisions and murals on the wall.

I have won various awards and 10 years ago opened my new salon, Zoo Hair Salon.

How many salons do you have now?

Shay Dempsey: I have three salons in Dublin:

    • my flagship salon is beside Dublin’s glamorous shopping street, Grafton Street

    • one at Citywest Hotel, one of Ireland’s premier conference and golf hotels

    • one in Naas, County Kildare, one of Dublin’s satellite towns.

How would you describe your business?

Shay Dempsey: Zoo Hair Salon is very much a boutique-style salon, offering five-star hairdressing with five-star service. We push constantly for high-quality hairdressing in all aspects of cutting, colouring and training.

I hope I speak for my staff when I say it is a hard-working environment, but also good fun. We take pride in our work and always support each other.

Why do you think you have been so successful?

Shay Dempsey: A lot of the success of Zoo is down to hard work and a philosophy that you can never stop learning. Training with teams such as Sassoon Academy and Sebastian Professional has been very important.

It was this philosophy that encouraged me to produce a training DVD – Couture by Shay Dempsey. I am continuously reading – fashion magazines, books on art and architecture – everything that inspires hairdressing.

I am dedicated and passionate about hair, which is vital for success in the industry.

What is your unique selling point (USP) and why does it work for you?

Shay Dempsey:Our USP is our bespoke approach to clients. Every client has an in-depth consultation with their stylist and colourist to ensure they receive a service that is right for them.

We dedicate a lot of time to our clients, tailoring the service. This works because clients trust their stylist and colourist and are confident that they will get something they want and that suits them.

What do you think about British hairdressing?

Shay Dempsey: I have always looked up to British hairdressing as I feel it’s always been slightly ahead of Ireland in all aspects.

London has always had an edge that can’t be replicated anywhere and it is definitely more advanced in terms of fashion – it’s one of the world’s fashion capitals. This has meant that hairdressing has moved quicker to stay in fashion.

What is the difference between Irish and British hairdressing?

Shay Dempsey: As the population of Britain is 12 times that of Ireland, there is more scope to work within British hairdressing simply because there are more people.

There is a huge amount of ethnic diversity in the UK, much more so than in Ireland, and this means that there is more opportunity for hair and fashion to develop, therefore leading the way in terms of hairdressing.

I’m very proud to have some great friends in the UK and also my work with Sebastian Professional.

Who do you admire in hairdressing?

Shay Dempsey: Robert Lobetta, international creative director of Sebastian Professional. Robert is a visionary and someone that I look up to.

I’m so proud to be working with Sebastian Professional as its official design specialist, which hopefully will see me work more closely with Robert and his team.

Another C-R-A-Z-Y Week - Andrew Barton

    Andrew-Barton-Saks-Awards.jpg
Last week was CRAZY!!!!! I don't feel like I have been to bed.

Monday was the Saks Awards, which was a really big day to award all the company's big achievers at London's swanky Cafe de Paris.

It was a very glamorous day and it was really great to see everyone together and catch up with all the franchisees. Being hairdressers, it goes without saying that we had a big party into the small hours!

Tuesday, I had the press launch of Shiny Happy Hair at a suite at the Mayfair hotel. There were over 90 journalists from different publications.

I was really nervous in the build up, worrying if anyone would come and how it would go down, but I was thrilled by the turn out and the response was brilliant.

The journalists were excited about the vision and philosophy behind the range and, after two years in the pipeline, it feels great to finally be out there.

After the official launch, I partied late into the night with lots of my friends. Asda, where the products will be sold, very kindly sent me round 40 bottles of champagne, so it was some celebration!

Needless to say, the not-drinking-in-January took a bit of a dent for a couple of days, but I'm back to it now.

Wednesday morning I had a really early start to get down to Devon, where Tracey, Alison and I were presenting for South Devon college.

It was interesting because we were invited to present the Indulgence collection to students and local salon owners. Often the regions get neglected when it comes to these types of presentations so it was good to go out there, but I worked out that I spent 11 hours travelling in total, so it was completely exhausting!

I spent Thursday in the office going through over 100 emails and then enjoyed a really special dinner with my first ever junior, AJ.

He is actually Andrew too, but you couldn't have two Andrews in the salon so he said 'I'll be Andrew Junior'. AJ caught on and he's been known as that ever since - even by his own family! He works as a colourist now and it was really nice to catch up with him.

As usual, I was in the salon on Friday, then Saturday was filming for the new series of 10 Years Younger before flying out to Bangkok for some seminars - more on both of those next week...

Last night I interviewed Vidal Sassoon for a special feature which will appear in next week's issue. He has just celebretaed his 80th birthday, and I spoke to him about his career, his memories and the people he had worked with. I could have listened to him for hours as he talked enthusiastically about the inspirations behind his famous looks, the people he worked with, the team that he adored and the dedication, passion and commitment he has for the industry. I couldn't sleep as his stories rang round my mind and writing the feature this morning was one of the most interesting I have written. He revealed his favourite style he ever created was the five point cut -- but to find out why you'll have to read HJ next week! Ruth @HJi x

Is the five point cut your favourite look ever too? Join the debate on the my HJi forums.

Find out what other top hairdressers had to say about Vidal Sassoon and his career.

Northern Ireland hairdresser Anne Moore is throwing a spectacular Masquerade Ball this Valentine's Day in aid of newly formed charity the ‘New Hairizon’ Project.

The New Hairizon community project supports cancer patients or other hair loss sufferers with quality styling and superior wigs.

Project founder Anne says: "Our goal with this project is to open a clinic, whereby the health service and the wig makers are in partnership and the standard wigs become real hair, because cancer has no respect for your age or finances.

"The stand I am taking is that everyone going through this awful disease should be supported to help them on their recovery.

She adds: "The Masquerade ball plans to be two fold in what it will achieve. Firstly a spectacular evening of fun, entertainment and enchantment will be had by all.

"Secondly, and most importantly, we will be raising money for this much needed project that will make a long term difference to people undergoing chemotherapy treatment"

Tickets for the Valentine's Masquerade Ball at The Ashburton Hotel in Lurgan cost £15 and are on sale from Anne Moore’s Hairdressing, Thomas Moore Interior and Hair by Stephen International or you can contact Anne Moore on 028 3832 6808 for more information.

The winners of HJ's British Hairdressing Awards 2007, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, gathered together at London hot-spot The Ivy for an exclusive lunch to celebrate their success.

It was an opportunity to get a first glimpse of this year's winners' supplement, which they all agreed was the best in years, and to receive a copy of the DVD of the memorable evening.

While some of the winners admitted they were a little nervous about seeing their speeches in the cold light of day, there was also the odd request for extra disks to give to their proud parents!

    Dated: January 19, 2008 10:27 AM

Wella Professionals has taken four key trends which represent the trends for 2008: Wonderland, Mineral Splendour, Factory Lyrics and Couture Allure.

Inspired by new and emerging directions, each of the four trends is free to be interpreted by the hairdressers unique personality in this year's Trend Vision Award Young Talent Category or the prestigious Trend Vision Award Colour Category.

     Wonderland
    Wonderland-pic.jpg

Wonderland exudes a dreamlike nature where colours may be loud and energising with opacity for bold statements or translucent for sheer layers. There is an air of innocence coupled with an optimistic and contemporary romanticism. Oversized motifs and flower explosions give way to fluidity and a seemingly whimsical look. Hair is loose and deconstructed and may be long or elfin, child-like and flyaway - like cotton candy.

Shape & Form Wonderland where nature is enhanced by technology giving inspiration to an imaginary eco dream.

Hair lengths are grading from short to long loose and deconstructed lengths & textures. Pixie fringes fade to feather soft ends.

Colours range from harmonized base shades giving a canvas from which Honey golds, neutral browns and organic coppers merge into accents of apricots, rose and petal
    hues.

Techniques "Smugging" partial focal points and fullheads.

     Mineral Splendour

    Mineral-Spendour-pic.jpg

An understated new sophistication underlies a trend of subtle metallic colours: champagne, bronze and pewter, of shimmering, irridescent materials and unexpected treasures. A preciously simple look of fluid lines and pleated constructions. Hair may be medium or long length with head hugging, cocoon shapes. Warm metallic or cold mineral effects sum up the hair colour.

Shape & form: Mineral Splendour evokes understated sophistication, glowing radiance and organic forms with fluidity to overall shapes.

Hair lengths are medium with bevelled edges, c-curved lines movement can be expressed but sculptured not textured, with radiant silk finish shine.

Colours range from warm bronze browns, golden shimmering coppers, metallic silvers, mineral tones, cool agates.

Techniques: Interlocking curved angles, seemless edges. Tone on Tone Glazing.

     Factory Lyrics

    Factory-Lyrics-pic.jpg
A mix of intelligent beauty and ultra feminine allure, Factory Lyrics has a confident striking, somewhat imperfect beauty. An androgenous look where femininity meets workwear, there is a sense of industrial reminiscence. Clothes are embellished yet functional in dusky dark colours and beautiful, rough materials. Hair takes on a contrast, not uniform shape. Cuts are graphic but deliberately broken with asymmetrical shapes defining the style. Complexions are perfectly creamy.

Shape & Form: Factory Lyrics is the harmonious balance between beauty and function.

Hair lengths are short or long anti-balance is the focus, internal textures contrast one another. Finish is a combination of polished and raw.

Colours range from cool smokey hues, taupes, greys and silvers.

Techniques: Linear lines, vertical bands/rectangular offset "barcode" smudging applications to roots to soften contrasts of colours.

     Couture Allure

    Couture-Allure.jpg
Opulent styling captures the essence of Couture Allure. This is the new aesthetic chic, there is an audacity and charisma to this look. It is a retro-futuristic look verging on the completely abstract. Fashion focuses on redefining proportions and geometrical constructions. Hair is strong, bold and couture cut, it has a sleek, almost artificial appearance. Colour tones are pure with graphic blacks and whites and convention breaking colours.

Shape & Form: Couture Allure is the essence of bold expensive signature haircuts, billowing dome shapes with structured volume. All hair lengths can be expressed within this Trend with the focus always on controlled opulent highly polished styling with maximised shine.

Hair lengths strong, bold and couture cut, it has a sleek, almost artificial appearance.

Colours range from velvet violets, cherry reds, majestic blues, white, new blacks- rouge noir.

Techniques: Full head colours -"Bias" method incorporating shine lines of saturated tones to accentuate volume and dimension.
