BLOWW and guests partied in style to celebrate the salon’s two year anniversary in November.
Director Paul Merritt says: “The BLOWW party was all about saying thanks to the team members, journalists, clients and associates who have helped to make BLOWW such a success in the two years its been trading.
“It’s been a hell of a ride but we’ve got here and I was happy to indulge in a cocktail or two to celebrate!”
Friends of the salon including Gok Wan, Heart FM’s Harriet Scott, fellow hairdressers Lee Stafford and Beverly C and singer Rick Parfit Jnr rocked out to DJ Rich Pack, whilst sipping on Cape North Vodka cocktails and dining on scrumptious steak and chip canapes.

Monday at the British Hairdressing Awards was a day full of angst, nervousness and anxiousness for me.
When Jayne Lewis-Orr invited me up on to stage to speak about my year as British Hairdresser of the Year and hand over the award, I spoke from the heart when I said that I hoped I would be taking the responsibility on for another year.

Throughout the year I tried to be great ambassador and a good spokesperson and tried to showcase British hairdressing as the best in the world through my international travels with the Saks Art Team
My deep care for the Benevolent means it is something that I have tried to create as much awareness for as possible, after all it’s our charity.
In 2008, I will continue to do so, but I will also be taking on breast cancer as my chosen charity to work with.
One of the reasons, I have decided to support breast cancer awareness if that it affects so many of our female colleagues their friends and families and, of course, our clients. I realise that people know who I am and I want to use that and I look forward to doing my bit for the charity in the year ahead.

ghd managing director Martin Penney and education director Beth Watson joined key members of the team to host a Champagne Tea at the Soho House.
The short soiree to thank the trade and specialist press for their on-going support and reinforce their commitment to professional hairdressers was attended by notable names in hairdressing such as Sean Dawson, Beverly C, Tim Hartley and Ann Herman and over 20 members of the press.
After a short sojourn in the private screening room, where guests were shown ghd's latest TV campaign and their irreverent new viral and given an insight into ghds plans for 2008, they returned to the reception for a tempting tea of elegant sandwiches, indulgent cakes and, of course, champagne!
Martin said: "We are so excited about our future and we never want to forget the people that have helped get us here. It's a real pleasure to show our thanks in this small way."

Angelo Seminara completed an incredible week when he added the Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year award to HJ's 2007 British Hairdresser of the Year at the Fellowship Luncheon and Awards 2007.
The lunch, at London’s Dorchester hotel, was hosted by Fellowship chancellor Andrew Clarke and president Sean Dawson.
As the wine and champagne flowed freely, members of the industry were acknowledged for their services to hairdressing in the Roll of Recognition.
Hairdressers who have made an outstanding contribution were made Fellows with Honours while former British Hairdresser of the Year Antoinette Beenders was given the accolade of Fellow with Distinction.
There were standing ovations for Tony Rizzo from Sanrizz, who received a Special Award for the work he has done for the Alternative Hair Show over the past 25 years, and Peter Goldsworthy from Goldsworthys who won the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The lunch also saw Robert Ari and Terry Calvert hand over the reigns for managing the F.A.M.E. Team - which for the first time will consist of five all-female members - to Dawn Bryant and Johnny Engstrom.
An award was also made to chancellor Andrew Clarke for the work he has done for the Fellowship over the past three years, before he passes the duties on to new chancellor Mark Creed in 2008.

I notice Paris Hilton has gone brunette -- just as my feature comes out telling you that brunette is the colour of the season, yet another celebrity opts for the shade. And what a difference it has made -- she looks sophisticated, younger and so much more pretty. And I'm not the only one that thinks this. Yesmin O'Brien from seanhanna in Sutton, Surrey, agrees. "I love Paris Hilton's new look. I think it warms up her skin tone. She is one one of those style icons who can wear or try any new look and it comes off, a bit like Victoria Beckham." What do you think? Ruth@HJi x

It's official - straighteners are woman's greatest gadget!
Our dear friends the straightening irons were even voted better than the mobile phone in a survey of gadgets by electrical superstores Comet.
Demonstrating just how important hair is to womankind, the hairdryer was another popular choice - coming in a popular fourth in the poll.
A spokeswoman for Comet said: "Hair straighteners really have revolutionised many women's lives and we see this in the sales."
As the demand for straighteners continues to grow, professional brands are pushing the boundaries and improving the technology to make their products even more desirable:

Corioliss
Corioliss continue to innovate and show the way forward for the electrical market. We already use groundbreaking nano silver technology in our straighteners and as we are aware of the consumer’s needs and the ever-changing trends within fashion, we have also launched a new range of detachable C2 skins which securely attach to the body of the C2 so that your straightener and your hair will always be on trend.
ghd
At ghd we’re delighted to hear the results of this survey. We know from our own research that girls the world over can’t live without their ghd IV stylers and that they also love the fact that they can create waves, curls and flicks with them as well as straighten their hair.
Kodo
As well as meeting and exceeding the high-performance and results that professional hairdressers and their clients demand, Kodo's Sakarra and Mikado ceramic straighteners are the safest high-performance ceramic straighteners available in the market today. Both feature Kodo's unique and ultra-safe HEATSMART technology, which means they reach their optimum performance temperatures without exposing users to the potential safety risks inherent in other professional, high-performance straighteners.
Can you think of a better gadget than straighters? Join the debate on the HJi forums.

HJi is recreating our fabulous 3D logo (pictured) and we need your help to choose the new faces.

At Salon International, we snapped the fashionable, quirky and utterly gorgeous people who caught our eye.
Now we've put some of them into a Gorgeous Gallery on My HJi, and we need your help to decide whose faces we should include in the new logo.
To vote for your favourites, log on to My HJi (you'll need to join first) and rate your favourite snaps by clicking on the image then selecting how many stars you think the picture deserves.
The more five-star ratings an image receives, the more chance that person will have of being included in the logo; so if you see yourself in the gallery and you really want to be a face of HJi make sure you encourage all your friends to rate you too!
Don't forget that you can also upload your own pictures of anything from your portfolio to your staff Christmas party on My HJi to share with the hairdressing community.

It's been quite a year for Lily Allen. She's topped the chart, launched a clothes range for New Look and slimmed down to a slender size 8.

And she's even got it right in the style styles according to some top stylists who were, quite frankly gushing, about her luscious chocolate locks.
"I love this new haircut on Lily – it really suits her. It’s young, fresh, fun and glamorous. I’m so glad to see that she’s let her hair down and lost the old fringe that she wore to the side. Her new long, glossy style with a straight, blunt fringe frames her face, brings out her eyes and shows how pretty she is. This style works especially well with her thick hair, which looks healthy and shiny. This look can be created on shorter or thinner hair by using hair extensions and then styling with straighteners."
Inanch Emir, Inanch, London
"Lily’s beautiful chocolate brown hair appears to have been treated with a semi-permanent colour, giving it maximum shine and a healthy, full, thicker look. This rich colour works perfectly with her on-trend fringe and her delicately tanned skin tone, which accentuates her big brown eyes and gives her youthful complexion an overall glow. Lily’s colour mirrors her style – classic, chic and effortless"
Giuseppe Bulzis, Windle, Covent Garden, London
Much as we'd love to say something controversial, we have to agree that Lily's look is spot on, but we'd be curious to hear from you if you think there's room for improvement...

A host of top hairdressers give their advice on how to help clients sparkle through the party season.

Lizanne Laurin, senior associate, Paul Mitchell
“Hairbands are hot right now. This is an updated classic.”
Get the look: Apply Paul Mitchell Extra-Body Daily Boost and Sculpting Foam, then brush through. Dry the hair with a large volumising brush. Curl and set the hair, using a large barrel curling iron and clips. Remove the clips and backcomb, sweeping hair up and securing to the crown with pins. Put band in place and spritz with a strong hold spray and gloss.

Kelly McCarthy, Reflections, Bristol
"This red carpet look was inspired by high-maintenance celebrity glamour. Instead of the soft, natural look we’ve experienced through summer, curls are big and bold."
Get the look: Apply a volumising blow-dry spray to towel-dried hair. Wrap hair around the ceramic plates of straightening irons and pull downwards to create curls. Finish with a spritz of shimmer spray.

Jimmy Paul, editorial stylist, Bumble and bumble
"This look exudes the kind of glamour that is synonymous with 60s starlets like Sophia Loren and Brigitte Bardot. It’s an iconic updo with a modern edge."
Get the look: Apply Bumble and bumble Thickening Spray before blow-drying with a round brush for maximum volume. Tease the hair then smooth with a small comb. Use pins to secure the shape and set in place with a shine and hold spray.

Louise Wood, Hair Advice Centre, Englefield Green, Surrey"This slightly dishevelled yet glamorous look will take a client’s hair effortlessly from desk to dance-floor, and its long-lasting, shimmering style could be worn day or night."
Get the look: Prepare hair with volumising mousse, then back-brush the front section, smooth into a quiff and secure with pins. Finish with a strong-hold hairspray and shine spray.

Akin Konizi, hob salons, London
"Create Marcel waves on short hair, instead of the usual longer length locks, for pure elegance."
Get the look: Place a low side parting on wet hair, before applying a setting gel throughout, with finger waves worked into the front section and secured in a diagonal direction. Dry to set in place. Remove section clips and manipulate hair before finishing with shine spray.

Lisa Whiteman, Webster Whiteman, London
"This glamorous alternative to the quiff adds instant interest to straight hair, giving it a sophisticated, sleek look."
Get the look: Apply straightening balm through the lengths of the hair, smooth with straighteners before applying shine spray. Take a section from the top, bring it forward onto the face, roll it under and secure with pins by weaving grips underneath and keeping them hidden. Finish with hairspray to hold.

Anya Dellicompagni, Francesco Group, Midlands
"This very glam look was inspired by icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, yet styled to reflect present day influences from designers such as Chanel and Dior. It’s all about gloss, shine and glamour."
Get the look: Work heated rollers through long hair then separate each curl and dress with shine and hold spray. Sweep the fringe across from a low parting and accessorise by holding it in place with a sparkling clip.
Tracey Devine, Angels, Aberdeen
"Keep the overall feeling soft and natural, like silk, with an air of luxury and seductive decadence."
Get the look: Ensure hair is completely dry and spritzed with a protective spray before working into sections on medium barrel tongs. Angle forward slightly and roll the hair tightly as the curls will drop a little as the night progresses.

Mark Leeson, Mark Leeson Hair, Body & Mind, Mansfield
"With a seductively sweeping fringe, this smooth style is a truly Bardot-esque take on the classic ponytail."
Get the look: Spray Goldwell’s Double Boost Rootlift throughout before drying hair to achieve maximum volume, then set on heated rollers for lift and hold. Brush hair through then backcomb the roots for height, before dressing the front of the hair into a sweeping fringe, smoothed through the crown and gathered at the nape of the neck.

Jason Smith, artistic director, Balmain Extensions
"This is a 50s-inspired look but with a cleaner, stronger shape."
Get the look: Gently backcomb hair from the root before adding a 25cm Balmain hairMakeup piece, pinned in a mohawk, vertical position. Bring in the sides and smooth over the top, then secure with a pin before finishing with hold and shine products.

Gary Hooker & Michael Young, Hooker & Young, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
"This beautiful, wearable but opulent look is extra special for the party season, and will certainly stand out in a crowd!"
Get the look: Crimp all the hair and add human hair extension pieces for an extra volume boost. Sweep the front section of the hair around and pin at the nape of the neck, then mist with Matrix Biolage Shine Renewal.

Sean Tetlow, The Colour Room, Stockport
"This evening style is a glamorous, sexy but soft look, that doesn’t try too hard. It’s easy to achieve and doesn’t require precise styling."
Get the look: Apply System Professional’s Volumagic to dry hair and randomly place different-sized heated rollers, brush through, and backcomb, keeping the shape soft and curls loose. Pin sections up at the back to give a bobbed shape and pull out tendrils for a distressed look. Finish with shimmer and hold spray.

The last few weeks have been the busiest I’ve ever experienced. In fact, what day is it?
I’ve been looking for the perfect new recruits to join the Saks Art Team. We had loads of enquiries from our recruitment campaign in HJ both from the UK and abroad… which is great.
We then had to read between the lines of glittering CVs, before interviewing and trade testing the applicants.
We’ve got a couple of real superstars, who’ll be great once we’ve taken them through their induction training.
Being in the Art Team is a specialist job that combines teaching groups in our Academies; travelling the world presenting hair shows and seminars to international audiences; working on shoots and much more.
It’s creatively very different to working in the salon.
We've got two new team members on board and I’m still looking for another two people to join us!

As 2007 comes to an end - can you believe it's already over? - I've been reflecting on the year that has gone by and it has been a huge year for me.
I suppose you could say that it was the year that I really got going and started to get into hairdressing. Last year I was just starting out in the industry and dipping in.
Now I have tried every cut and every colour and learned a lot... but I still have a hell of a lot more to learn and next year will be another big year.
Looking back, I think that the biggest lesson I have learned is the importance of good communication skills. If you can sit and talk to someone for an hour-and-a-half even if they don't love their hair they will be happy.
Making the most of that lesson means learning to multi-task, though. Some might think that it is easy to cut hair and talk at the same time but when you are starting out it is really not!
Fortunately so far my clients have been models and they know that I am still training so they will chat when I am sectioning off the hair and then stop talking when I am cutting because I have to concentrate.
I've also learned about the client cycles in the salon. Back in the summer, there were times when Forresters was a very quiet place. Right now, as we countdown to Christmas, it is absolutely mental!
There has been a constant stream of clients coming through the door and the stylists have a rota of 45 minutes for a cut and blow dry, so when people come in and want something that takes longer - as they seem to do a lot at this time of year - it all gets a little hectic!
Everyone is festive, jolly and stressed; but for some reason no one seems that keen on me putting Christmas songs on at 9 o'clock in the morning!
That's all from me this year... more in 2008. Happy Christmas!

Anneka Rowsell from Mawson & Company, in Winchester asks her icon Beverly C about her illustrious career.

Anneka: What do you like the most about your job?
Beverly: The diversity. From TV to photo shoots, to flying around the world educating and presenting, and at home spending time with my clients and my team.
Anneka: Who is your icon in the industry?
Beverly: I admire lots of people for different reasons. Anthony Mascolo, Trevor Sorbie, Robert Lobetta, and Eugene Souleiman are all highly creative and not afraid to break the boundaries.
Anneka: Was being the first woman to win HJ’s British Hairdresser of the Year award your best achievement?
Beverly: Absolutely. It was and is the pinnacle of everything I’ve done so far. It made any blood, sweat and tears shed worthwhile and I’m pleased that women have since been equally recognised in the industry.
Anneka: What inspires you?
Beverly: Catwalks, photography and imagery. But, most importantly my team – the people around me who make my ideas come to life.
Anneka: Describe your signature style?
Beverly: Beautiful, sexy hair with an edge.
Anneka: What advice would you give to someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Beverly: You must have passion, persistence, and patience. Be focused and don’t be afraid to ask people for help and guidance. The Fellowship for British Hairdressing has been very important to me in this respect.
Anneka: What is your favourite part of the industry?<
Beverly: I love all of it, but I especially enjoy new creative concepts – for shows and shoots – and seeing them come to life.

From Britney shaving her hair off to Posh's constant updates to the 'pob', 2007 was certainly the year when celebrity hairstyles hit the headlines.
These are the hair icons of 2007, according to some of the biggest names in the industry...
| Victoria Beckham | ||
![]() | Andrew Barton, Saks Hair & Beauty, London "2007 was certainly the year of the haircut as celebs chopped and changed their looks. Victoria’s pob metamorphosed in an array of different finishes, colours and lengths. It really was the year of the haircut. Girls who would never previously have dreamed of having their locks chopped suddenly turned over a new leaf. Whether you love or hate her, Victoria is a style icon and what she does others follow and emulate." | ![]() |
| Agyness Deyn | ||
![]() | Guy Kremer, Guy Kremer International, Winchester, Hampshire "Model Agyness, who is featuring in the current Dior and Burberry campaigns, is a modern-day Linda Evangelista. She has a short blonde crop at the moment but she has also been red and brunette this year. She has done a lot for our colour bookings during 2007." | ![]() |
| Katie Holmes | ||
![]() | Mark Leeson, Mark Leeson Hair, Body & Mind, Mansfield, Nottingham "Katie looked wonderful this year and manages to pull off both long and short hair with complete ease. Her most recent sleek bob frames her face perfectly and looks gorgeous when worn choppy and voluminous or smooth and glossy. It is a classic with a twist and right on trend." | ![]() |
| Keira Knightley | ||
| Nick Irwin, TIGI "Within two seasons Keira has seamlessly moved through major fashion trends, starting with a short, pretty, feminine haircut that had a strong 60s feel to a softer, longer bob shape. She’s also given a nod to her hairstyle from the film Atonement appearing at red carpet events with a 20s/30s look, which is a trend that was seen on the catwalks for spring/summer 2008. I think her timing and her taste are impeccable; she is a real style icon." | ![]() |
| Sienna Miller | ||
![]() | Errol Douglas, London "The celebrity that has stood out the most for me over the past year is Sienna, she is the epitome of cool. She can carry off so many styles and she isn’t afraid to take risks. She is the actress equivalent of Kate Moss – she does red carpet glam with such ease, but also looks incredible when she is taking the dogs for a walk." | ![]() |
| Kate Moss | ||
![]() | Angelo Seminara, Trevor Sorbie "Kate has transformed herself by having a heavy fringe cut and updating her layers. Suddenly, she is no longer the rock chick but the sophisticated girl about town. The style is a great way to update long hair while retaining the length." | ![]() |
| Joss Stone | ||
| Phil Smith, Toni & Guy, Salisbury "I love Joss’s haircut. It really suits her personality and her hippy chick appearance. I also think it’s the perfect look for her career as it provides her with versatility to meet all occasions. I actually camped beside her one year at Glastonbury and her hair looked great even after two days in the madness of a huge festival. The only thing I would change about this look would be her colour. It’s a very bold and brave look and she’s obviously trying to make a statement, but I would encourage her to return to her natural shade." | ![]() | |
| Amy Winehouse | ||
![]() | Antoinette Beenders, Aveda "Amy has brought the beehive back with a vengeance. It has become the celebrity hairstyle of the year overtaking the pob. A-list fans include Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, Kelly Osbourne and Mischa Barton who have all been sporting beehives. The Winehouse influence has also given the beehive serious street cred and is bringing lots of young women into salons. This will be the look of the Christmas party season." | ![]() |
