Hello guys!
After surviving child birth (I was convinced I really could not do it!) and a wonderful 9 months off with my baby girl, Heidi, I am now back in the HJ office full time. It is brilliant to be back in the industry and I am really looking forward to all the events I have in my diary already.
I’ll be at the British Hairdressing Business Awards on Monday night, which promises to be a spectacular night as always. Then I’m judging Redken’s Urban Talent competition the following Monday.
I love seeing the fresh talent that’s coming through and Redken’s event should be filled with some great hairdressing. Good luck to everyone who is entering.
I’m also interviewing Angus Mitchell this week - the Paul Mitchell team are over from the USA and I’ve got the pleasure of meeting Angus and John Paul. If you have anything you want me to ask them, please drop me a line & I’ll do my best!
For now, have a good day and to my friends in the industry who I haven’t seen for a while, please drop me a line to say hello. I’ve missed you!

Wasn't the 'Grandad’s Back in Business' documentary on BBC2 on Monday night fascinating?

In case you missed it, the idea was that Raymond, a 60-year-old with 45 years' experience as a hairdresser (and 45 years' of bad habits), and, Becky a 17-year-old trainee with heaps of potential (and heaps of attitude), went head to head to land a job at Daniel Galvin in London.
They each worked as a junior for a month, proving their worth by helping out in the salon, doing a cut, colour, updo, photo shoot and presenting on stage before one of them was offered the job.

On Monday night, we resumed our model nights at Forresters which means that summer is officially over!
You wouldn't necessarily notice that in the salon, though, because most people are still going for the shorter 'Posh' look that has defined this summer.
I'm sure that as soon as the autumn weather and fashions establish themselves there will be a shift in the trends people are asking for. I'll keep you posted as and when I see it.

The theme for this week has definitely been training - although, as usual, I've covered a couple of thousand miles in the process!
On Monday, I was teaching for L'Oréal in London; on Tuesday, it was L'Oréal Manchester; Wednesday, the Freelance Hair and Beauty Association and on Thursday, I was in Dundee for a salon visit.
I do regular training sessions with the Freelance Hair and Beauty Association and have now developed a real understanding of what they require. This time, it was a morning demo and afternoon workshop on Saks' current fashion collection.

Mobile hairdressers get a bad press and that is a massive shame because there is room for all types within the industry and there are a lot of people out there who want someone to come to them to do their hair.
They have a challenging job because they are always on the move, quite isolated and trying to offer a quality service without tools like a backwash, mirror or proper chair. However, they have earned a bad reputation because it is questionable whether some of them keep up to date with the latest trends and techniques.
Members of the Freelance Hair and Beauty Association, on the other hand, are always educating themselves and staying in touch with the latest developments, which is why I am proud to be associated with them.

I love this time of year as the world's eyes are on the fashion world, which includes the hair.
With New York Fashion Week underway and London Fashion Week round the corner, it's great to see what session stylists are predicting we will all be wearing next season. I'm constantly asked what will be the look for the season, and I am in a privileged position to know before most. Unlike past seasons, there isn't one single look and it's great to see such a variety of styles hitting the catwalks. I'll be keeping my eye on the daily shows -- if you miss them we'll have a full round up just for you. ruth @HJi x

I'm in hot and sunny Barcelona for the launch of the Revlon Professional Revlonissimo. Along with 100 Irish and UK hairdressers, I have seen the company's Baroque collection and trends for the coming season.
Last night I was talking to Jerome Lefebvre, general manager of France and vice president of Northern Europe and as well as his extensive knowledge of European hairdressing, he had enormous respect for British hairdressing, describing it as unique, creative and constantly inspiring.
Along with Neville Ramsey and Paul Johnson from Sunderland and Claudio Contrasti from London, I felt proud to be flying the British flag. Swapping stories, anecdotes and industry facts, British hairdressing really is number one in the world.

London Fashion Week is now in full swing, and I was lucky enough to get behind the scenes yesterday, as a guest of Toni & Guy.
As one of LFW’s main sponsors, they’re running a fully-functioning salon at the event’s headquarters within the Natural History Museum, offering members of the press blow-dries and a chance to test the brand’s new Model.Me collection of products, created and endorsed by supermodels Erin O’Connor and Helena Christensen, and pop princess Jamelia.

More than 950 guests, including some of the biggest names in the industry, arrived at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London, on Monday 10 September, for HJ’s 2007 British Hairdressing Business Awards.
The evening celebrated those whose business acumen has helped raise levels of excellence both within their own enterprises and within the industry.
The awards, now in its ninth year, recognise staff at all levels of hairdressing, from juniors to business directors, and have become a benchmark for achievement in business.
The night was also a fantastic opportunity to network with the current and future stars of the industry, with plenty of time for socialising before the awards ceremony and partying afterwards.
Guests chatted over champagne cocktails at the reception, and the buzz continued throughout the four-course meal.

This Monday, my model cancelled because she was ill. Usually, this would have been a real disappointment, but as it worked out, it was a bit of a result, because it gave me plenty of time to get ready for my first ever night out in the industry: at Redken Tribe07.
It was an amazing night. I absolutely loved it and look forward to getting out and about lots more in the future.
I can honestly say that I have never been to anything like it before and you could tell that everyone was a hairdressers because they were all really fashionable and individual.

Last night I attended an overview of the Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies, which launches in 2009.
The course is part of a new education initiative involving 14 different industries and you'll be able to read more about it on hji.co.uk and in the Hairdressers Journal in the coming weeks.
My lasting impression from the evening was how much more united, more progressive and more enthusiastic the hair and beauty industries are than other professions.

Wow what a week I have had! I’m still talking about what a great event Redken’s tribe was on Monday night.
I spent the day judging the finalists at the Redken Exchange in Hammersmith- there were three colour finalists, and three cut/style. The standard was amazing and it was extremely difficult to decide on a winner.
The three other judges were Chris Moody, who is an old friend of mine so it was great to spend time with him, Sasha Mascolo-Tarbuck and Josh Wood from Real Hair. It was brilliant to spend time with them and I thoroughly enjoyed the company of the other judges.
We made a great team and all had different opinions, but ultimately still agreed on the winners.

Having landed 12 hours ago in a very wet and stormy Las Vegas (it never rains here!) I, like the other 250 delegates from the UK, am waiting to see what Anthony Mascolo and Tigi will do at their 2007 World Release event tomorrow at the Mandalay Bay Convention Centre. Having had a sneak preview at the visuals and clothes - it looks set to be an amazing show that will not only inspire, but also educate.
Off now for a little retail therapy as the Tigi team complete rehearsals..........Jayne@HJi x

Think that the BBC's Who Do You Think You Are? is about getting to know celebrities roots?
Well, you haven't seen Guess the Celebrity Roots yet!
It's got six hairlines and all you have to do is match the famous face. So if you think you know celebrity hair; this is your chance to show your mettle.
For the record, I scored a rather lowly three! I'll let you know who they were later...

I'm not exactly having a bad hair day today - more of a shocker of a hair day! I made the school-girl error of putting too much product in my hair; so, it goes with out saying that my locks are currently caked to my head.
On occasion, this would have had me running back to the shower, or at the very least grabbing a hat on my way out the door - I have a stash of trilbys and flat caps for dealing with such occasions.
Today, however, joy-of-joys, I managed to slide with (relative) ease into my favourite just-washed Diesel jeans. Thus lifting my mood and making facing the world an easier task.
While this is not a completely isolated occurance; it is one that happens far more frequently the other way round e.g. blow dry my hair okay and then see my completed look in the full-length mirror and think 'what were you thinking?' and go back to change.
So, as I drove to work with a smile upon my face - that quickly subsided when I caught a glimpse of my hair in the rear-view mirror - it got me thinking which do I hate more: fat-and-ugly days or bad hair days?
I'm still musing over it as we speak, but think I'm leaning toward the former...

At the launch of the forthcoming Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies, one of the main themes that kept recurring was the difficulty young people have communicating with clients when they first arrive on the shop floor.
It's not that they are deliberately rude, just that they don't have the confidence or the know-how to start a conversation.
Yet in many ways those skills are just as important as the styling skills learned in NVQ training - after all, hairdressing is just about as sociable as an industry can be.

After a very successful, productive trip to Thailand, I came back to earth with a bit of a bump when I got back to London on Friday because British Airways had lost my luggage.
It was typical because just the other day I was saying that I’d never lost my luggage and hadn’t really experienced any major delays before!
I usually catch the Thursday night ‘red-eye’ back to London and head straight to the salon with an hour’s turnaround. So needless to say, messing around trying to track down my luggage put me behind for the day.
In case you’re wondering, I finally got my luggage back on Tuesday. It had been in Bangkok all this time!

Back in the spring, Daniel Galvin invited in BBC television cameras into the salon for a month to film a one-off documentary.
‘Grandad’s Back in Business’ saw Raymond, who had 45 years’ experience in the hair industry, go head-to-head with Becky, who’d just started out, for a job in Daniel Galvin’s exclusive London salon.
The programme showed the difficulties that older people face when they try to get back into the workplace – particularly in a young, vibrant industry like the hair industry.
But while the cameras and the British public wanted sweet, endearing Raymond to be given the job, it was Becky who was given her chance.
We at HJi aren’t ashamed to admit that we were among the majority rooting for Raymond, but nevertheless we felt it was high-time we caught up with Becky to see how she is getting on.

You might well be experienced at colouring hair, but any expert will always admit there's room for improvement.
So make the most of these key pieces of advice on successful colouring techniques from some of the best in the business:

“Always correct the base colour first. It is no good working with old or patchy colour. Get rid of all the old colour so you have an even, neutral base. Colour placement is much easier this way and will be more accurate.”
Lisa Shepherd. Lisa Shepherd Salons, Kidderminster
“Perfect hair colour results come from precision colouring. Start with clean sectioning, making sure all the hair you don’t want to colour is pinned up neatly out of the way, and apply the colour only where you want to see it. Nothing ruins a colour more quickly than careless overlapping.”
Ian Black, Aveda, London
“Block colour is a big story for the season ahead. Colour should be intense, strong and high shine with one perfect colour choice taking precedent over multi-colour placement. It’s a great service to offer busy clients. It takes a quarter of the time that highlighting takes.”
Jo O’Neill, Toni & Guy, London
“I always begin with a pre-colour treatment. It’s especially good for damaged hair as it fills in the cracks and breakages of the hair shaft and creates the perfect base to work on. This treatment really does optimise the colour result and leaves hair feeling shiny and healthy.”
Robert Eaton Russell Eaton, Barnsley
“To ensure maximum movement through the hair, you should only ever take it two or three levels lighter than the natural shade. This will ensure colour is bold, natural and multi-tonal, but full of movement. Use only tinted lights to accentuate this natural movement and give a deeply sun-kissed look.”
Daniel Galvin, Daniel Galvin Salon, London
“We advise our colour rubbing technique. It creates soft, beautiful colour that adds depth and enhances tone. When more than two shades are applied throughout the hair with a highlighting or slicing technique, remove the foils and take two minutes massaging the colours into each other. This blends the colour so there is a softness between them.”
Gary Hooker and Michael Young, Hooker & Young, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
“Look at the client’s natural hair, eye and skin colour, then put them in the categories of light, medium and dark. Next check whether they have a cool or a warm skin tone. If an orange tone suits them then their skin tone is warm, and if it’s pink their skin tone is cool. You can then choose the correct depth and tone of colour for your client.”
Carolyn Newman, Charles Worthington, London

“The colour has to be unique, tailored to the individual and be an expression of the client’s personality. Assessing the hair type, shape of the haircut, skin tone, eye colour as well as lifestyle will determine the success of your colour creation.”
Francesco Fontana, Essensuals, London
“Hair colour should enhance the face and, in particular, the eyes. Techniques, tone and depth choices should reflect the eye contrast. The key to great colouring is all about a good consultation, which includes not only the eyes, but personality, skin and eye tones and face and body shapes.”
Karen Dodds, Cutting Room Creative, Leeds
