When customer service is right it makes the customer feel great, but when it goes wrong it can spoil your day and put you in a bad mood.

I am certainly of the generation that finds online networking still a little unnerving, but the more I do it, the more I enjoy it! Now that HJ and I have MySpace pages, I am intrigued to see so many hairdressers online, and it is a great way to communicate.

I've always known what a great career hairdressing is, and reading our Careers Guide, which is due out at the end of this month, confirms this. We look at different career paths you can take, whether it is session stylist or salon manager, and the training courses manufacturers and large training groups offer for you to attend to achieve success. Gone are the days when drop-outs went into hairdressing because they couldn't do anything else; hairdressing today is about making money, winning awards, dealing with problems and coming up with solutions and for many being recognised as a successful business person. Hairdressers today have to juggle creativity with business, team building with client satisfaction. We have written this supplement to inspire you, aspire you and help you realise your potential and your dream -- so go for it! Ruth@HJi x

Last night I watched Seven Ages of Rock on BBC TV, and this week it was all about heavy metal and glam rock. Motley Crew, Black Sabbath, Whitesnake and Iron Maiden were as known for their big hair as they were for their music.

I am trying to get a hair cut for my daughter and am amazed how many salons don't cut children's hair. Alternatively, it costs £40 for a trim. In an image conscious society making sure they have the right clothes and hairstyle is important to many nine year olds. Sleepovers at my house consists of trying out new styles with straighteners, coloured clip in extensions and heated rods accompanied by loud music and lots of giggling. These youngsters are clients of the future and it's important they have happy memories of visiting salons, creating styles and playing with products. Afterall, they could be paying in excess of £50 in a few years time for your service and products. What's your philosophy of dealing with children? Ruth @HJi x

This week's Talk-Back question is "What's the strangest request you've ever had in your salon?" We'd love you to leave us a comment letting us know the more weird and wonderful client requests you've received - keep it clean, obviously! Any comments left here may appear on a future letters page of HJ.

It's often said that a successful salon needs a creative and a business brain behind it. At the Wella Business Network event on Monday and Tuesday of this week, the business brains were out in force, enjoying an eclectic mix of inspirational speakers and interactive seminars.

Getting to know you! (There's a knack to this networking, you know)

It's always a pleasure to share an intimate evening with Michael Young and Gary Hooker, so when the invite came through from Matrix to get up close and personal with the dynamic duo I leapt at the chance. I was a little shocked to realise that the intimate evening in question was being attended by about 100 other people - all eager to share the wealth of experience the pair have as colourists.

Today is Celebrity Day at my children's school and I spent the morning tonging and straightening my daughter's hair so she looked like Avril Lavigne and spiking my son's hair as he went as Mr Incredible.
