Brits lead in Bologna

Posted by Jayne
Dated: April 2, 2007 9:54 AM

In Bologna, Italy at the COSMOPROF exhibition which is huge! Seen shows by Anthony Mascolo and the TIGI Creative Team and Mahogany - both leading the charge on promoting all that is fantastic about British hairdressing.
Beautiful hair and a diverse range of hairdressing techniques were presented by both teams and they seem to have become the talk of the show.
Off now to see what else I can find................more later.

Christina Aguilera Candyman

Posted by Ruth
Dated: April 2, 2007 4:50 PM

Have you seen the brilliant new video for Christina Aguilera's new single, Candyman? She appears in it with the same hairstyle but in red, brunette and blonde -- and looks knockout with all of them. It's amazing what difference the right colour can do -- I think she looks great with blonde hair but with red hair she looks quite alluring and with brunette more astute. What do you think? ruthx

Inspirational photographs

Have you clicked on our Image Gallery yet? Amazing isn't it! It's been a fabulous job going down into the HJ basement and going through issues dating back to the 1950s. It's true when they say fashion comes around -- bobs are fashionable now as they were in the 1960s; curls were as defined in the 1970s as they are now and colour has been creative for more years than I ever imagined. Looking at some of the old masterpieces I can't wait to do my next photo shoot for HJ, as there is so much inspiration in the archives and I am bursting with new ideas. Just imagine what it will do for you, the hairdresser! We will be constantly updating he image gallery with new and old images. I've got my favourites --- which ones are yours? ruthx

Inspirational hair events in May

Dated: April 10, 2007 10:11 PM

I'm just putting together the Final Word for 27 April issue and can't believe how many exciting and inspirational events are taking place in May. There are courses, Matrix is presenting an audience with Gary Hooker and Michael Young talking about colour, Wella Professionals Trend Vision Awards regional finals and the L'Oreal Colour Trophy regional finals are taking place around the country as well as seminars and shows by many of the colour houses. But it isn't just watching industry greats that offer inspiration: events at galleries, pop concerts and exhibitions can also bring new ideas and motivation to you and your business. Visiting an art gallery can offer ideas for a photo shoot, reading image books can get you thinking about a new haircut and watching a pop video can give you ideas for a presentation or show. Inspiration lies all around us everyday -- where do you get yours from? Let us know of any events, galleries or locations you have visited that have inspired you -- we'd love to share them with our readers. Ruthx

Dated: April 11, 2007 11:17 AM

As I am officially still on holiday, I am sat here trying to catch up on emails as I have my colour done, and it is at times like these that I realise just how much trust there is betweren client and colourist!
We have decided to remove the purple and I am now a glorious shade of orange........but I know that Robbie will make it all perfect.....if I was brave enough I'd put a picture up but it may scare the feint-hearted. It would definitely not make it into our Image Gallery!

Life on Mars

Dated: April 11, 2007 2:06 PM

Did you watch BBC's Life on Mars last night? It was a great ending to a fabulous show, with some of the the best characters on TV for a long time. But what about the fashion? I was only one year old in 1973 but can remember my parents -- who were hippies at the time -- wearing tight flares, flowery tops, (dad!) flowing smocks and mini skirts. But look round the streets now and you could be forgiven for thinking you too have stepped back in time. Printed smocks are the look for spring, with some great versions in high street stores such as Dorothy Perkins and Primark. And what about the hair? Long layers, soft waves and understated looks are also fashionable 30 years later -- the only difference is the technology and products around today. My mum used to iron her hair on the ironing board to straighten her waves! But the BBC got it spot on with the fashion -- go to the 1970s on our Image Gallery to see some of the styles fashionable back then. ruthx

Bridal Hair and Getting Older

Dated: April 12, 2007 10:04 AM

I attended a wedding in the windy county of Lancashire over Easter. It was a beautiful setting, in a village church overlooking the sweeping hills of Pendle. The bride wore an original 1950s wedding dress, and her hair was styled to match. With a feature to write on bridal hair for the next issue of HJ, I took note. But all I really learned was what an individual choice bridal hair is.
I also have a feature on men's grooming coming up and I can sympathise with any man who is approaching 40, but still wants to look fashionable.

Fellowship for British Hairdressing's President Night

Dated: April 17, 2007 12:58 PM

Dated: April 17, 2007 12:58 PM

Last night was the Fellowship for British Hairdressing's Presidents Night held at Madame Tussauds in London -- and it brought the tourist out in all 300 guests. While it was a celebration for President Sean Dawson, it was a chance for industry names to get together in their best gladrags -- and get a photo next to their favourite star. As well as celebrity hairdressers, the room was bursting with A-list celebrities, some who looked very realistic and who I often mistook for real people. Victoria and David Beckham, Jennifer Aniston (who is very small), Morgan Freeman (his eyes followed you around the room) Tom Cruise (who isn't that small) and a paparazzi (who I apologised for walking in front off, thinking I'd ruined his picture!) The night was also a tribute to chairman Kevin Arkell, who is retiring from his position. We've got some great pictures and a review of the night, so don't miss 4 May issue ruthx

This weekend is the HBSA (Hair & Beauty Suppliers Association) AGM in Barcelona, but rumour has it that it is warmer at home than it is here! It is great to see the manufacturers and wholesalers coming together for the good of the industry and helping to ensure that best practice is followed across all market sectors. This year also saw Wella Professionals, Steve Lowe hand over the presidency to me, and I am delighted to be the first girl to take on the role.

Hair Wars Disaster

Dated: April 25, 2007 9:23 PM

For the last 48 hours I have found it difficult to concentrate on anything other than the most damaging television I have ever seen for British hairdressing. For all of those who saw it, I am sure you would agree that the BBC2 documentary, Hair Wars, was an absolute misrepresentation of the hairdressing industry as we know it, and I am mortified for all the hairdressers I know who work so hard, and have done so for such a long time, to give hairdressing the credibilty it deserves.
