Redken's 2007 Global Symposium

Posted by Adam
Dated: February 1, 2007 11:48 AM

As the team has held the fort back at HJ HQ, I have been on a whirlwind trip to the USA with Redken.

And what better place than Las Vegas for it to host its bi-annual Global Symposium? Set within the Mandalay Bay hotel resort and casino, there were more than 10,000 hairdressers from around the globe – almost 100 of us flying the flag for British hairdressing. It really was the perfect platform for guests to enjoy the Redken artistic and business exchange from UK names that included our very own Chris Moody from Moody Hair, Lee Stafford from Lee Stafford salons and Amanda Dicker from The Chapel.

We enjoyed three days of inspirational seminars in Las Vegas that looked at topics including how to grow your business, motivate and maximise your team’s potential, guard your brand and make more profit (with a little bit of partying thrown in there too) before a jolly little jaunt over to Los Angeles for the UK leg of the tour (and a bit of partying too), where we enjoyed motivational talks on the history of the Redken brand and a fabulous insight into customer care from Jack Mitchell - author of Hug Your Customer.

Hair Extensions Under Fire

Posted by Ruth
Dated: February 5, 2007 10:16 AM

Once again hair extensions have come under fire in the British press over the weekend, with dramatic headlines screaming 'scalp-hunters' and images of young girls having their hair hacked off for Western vanity. This story looks set to go on and on. Last year's papers were full of horror stories and opinions on how Posh and friends could endorse such a practice. And with celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston being quoted as saying extensions ruined her hair, it looked like it could be the end for extensions. But the service continued to be as popular as ever and the reason has to be because of the professionalism of the industry.

Outrageous client requests

Dated: February 8, 2007 1:18 PM

I was talking to a group of hairdressers last week who were telling me about their clients and how some of them ask for the most outrageous things. Keeping the length but wanting a change is a favourite but one of the most frustrating requests, while clients bringing in photographs of celebrities and asking for the impossible is also popular. One hairdresser showed me a drawing of a pencil man with a bob her client brought in while another had a client who brought in a picture of her poodle! Which got me thinking -- what is the most outrageous request you have had from a client? Drop me a line -- I'd love to know! ruthx

I am sat here watching my children swim thinking just how lucky I am. On Monday night, the HABB Ball raised awareness of those that really need our help in so many different ways.
With the support of those attending, we will be able to give assistance to those who need it most.

Dated: February 14, 2007 12:24 PM

We're in the middle of London Fashion Week and it continues to be one of the most exciting weeks in the fashion calendar. Not only does it showcase the latest looks from established designers, it is great to see fresh, new talent coming through. And I'm not just talking about the clothes. While bags, gloves and jewellery all adorn the model, hair is the ultimate accessory that catches everyone's eye.

Must-have dress

Posted by

Posted by Ruth
Dated: February 16, 2007 2:23 PM

Dated: February 16, 2007 2:23 PM

We've all seen a celebrity wear an outfit we like, or a model with an eyecatching necklace, but ever wondered how to get hold of it? Last month we started a new back page answering various calls we get into the HJ office, asking where a certain dress or top is from that has appeared on our exclusive fashion pages. We then search to find the item in question as well as suggest alternatives to suit all budgets. If you see anything in HJ you are interested in, whether it is for a shoot, fashion show or just for your own wardrobe, let us know and we'll track it down.

It may seem that November is a million miles away, but the British Hairdressing Awards will be here before we know it.
I have spoken to lots of hairdressers who are already planning their shoots, putting together mood boards and booking a team of dependable individuals who will help them achieve their aims - becoming a finalist, and ultimately winning a title at the British Hairdressing Awards.

Who do you have on speed dial -- your best friend? Your mum? Your colourist? A great colourist is an asset to a team and someone a client can't live without. Ask any female friend who the most important person is for their image and their colourist will undoubtedly top the list.

Did you see the stars on the Oscars red carpet on Sunday night? We are doing a review next week of the good, the bad and the ugly and looking through images of Hollywood starlets, it was great to see old fashioned glamour back where it belongs.
