Happy 2007! I hope that you all had a fantastic night celebrating the new year and aren't feeling too unwell this morning......... If you are, I hope it was worth it!
One thing that struck me as the bells chimed to welcome in the new year is how the world has changed in the way it communicates. Text messaging was certainly the way I sent wishes to all those I know, whilst my niece spent the evening using online messaging. Gone are the days when we pick up the phone and speak or even go and visit!
I wonder how we will all be communicating as we welcome in 2017.......

If only a tiny fraction of your clients felt the same as I did on New Year's Day, you'll be doing a roaring trade over the next few weeks as people embark on their new health and beauty regimes. As always, I'm starting the year with great intentions - eat healthily, exercise more and generally try and make an effort with my appearance. With the big 40 only a year away, I can't take anything for granted anymore.
Now would certainly be a great time for salons offering the whole hair and beauty mix to start marketing special "New Year New You" packages.
After 10 days of binge eating, I feel like there's a whole extra me to carry around, so losing some weight is resolution one. But for many people a new haircut and image will be the tonic they need to kick start their New Year - that's on my list for mid January, first I need to shed half a stone so I can fit in the styling chair!!
Happy New Year everyone!

Here at HJ we have ditched the delicious chocolate and tasty treats and are on a mission to become a team of one beautiful boy and a group of gorgeous girls of goodness.
So as the New Year starts and we all resolve to ditch the resolve for a cleansing period, why not think about doing the same for your business?
It’s the perfect time to overhaul and look at what worked last year, while eliminating those ideas or initiatives that perhaps weren’t so successful. A fresh focus can be the perfect tonic this time of year, so what are you waiting for?

After a great few weeks off with the family, I'm back at work today -- and it already feels like I have never been away! After days of eating chocolates, snuggling up to radiators and drinking far too much alcohol, my hair and skin is paying the price. My red hue has faded and my defined curls have been replaced with frizz -- I think it's time for a detox for my hair. I'm going to spend the weekend with a bottle of deep conditioner rather than cheap plonk and get my hair in tip top condition before I have to face any of you guys. ruthx

I've just been down to our archive library, which holds every HJ published since we began in 1882 and it's amazing to see that history really does repeat itself. It looks like training was a hot topic of debate in the sixties, with cries for improved training for youngsters -- a debate that continues to rage on today. Wigs were the main accessory to transform a look, much like extensions are 40 years later. It's fascinating to look back at history and see how the industry has evolved -- and it's amazing how much we can learn. ruthx

Despite all my attempts to get ahead of myself before Christmas, the first few days of January 2007 have still proved hectic. While managing the workload, I also have to remember to sip my way through two litres of bottled water as part of my 'New Year new me' health regime. (4lbs lost so far). I wished I started my regime a bit earlier than New Year's Day when, on Monday, I judged the TIGI Photographic Competition.

Four days back at work and it already feels like a lifetime - there is just so much to do! The team are in the middle of putting together a range of supplements to keep you up-do-date and inspired and work continues at a rapid rate on this website with a team of developers working hard on a variety of projects.
The week got off to a fantastic start at the Saks awards - where staff from the entire business got together to recognise and reward innovation and creativity. A stunning hair show from British Hairdresser of the Year, Andrew Barton set the tone for the evening and entertained and inspired all those present.

The winners of the 2006 British Hairdressing Awards are each proving their worth as they continue to promote the professional hairdressing industry in a positive and professional light. But what more could we all be doing to attract the right people into this industry?

Loyal customers are the lifeblood of any business - but so many get it wrong.
As part of my 'New Year, New Me' regime, I joined the gym yesterday. It's not the first time. I joined about three years ago - and actually went regularly for 12 months.

Have you been watching Celebrity Big Brother? I'm a huge reality TV addict but this year it has been disturbing, but compelling, and is a reflection of life in any office, salon or school around the country.

Women have looked up to female celebrities for style ideas for years now but with the male grooming market booming, men are starting to look up to male stars for inspiration as well.

While it’s true that young hairdressers are the future of the industry, it’s still good to remember that many of them wouldn’t be here without the big names of the sixties who put British hairdressing on the World map.
Yesterday I visited Daniel Galvin’s fabulous salon in London’s West End and had a long and fascinating chat with Joshua Galvin. Joshua filled me in on more than 40 years of hairdressing history and I realise just how much the top names of today owe the likes of Joshua and Daniel – indeed, with the biggest salon in Europe, Daniel Galvin is still one of the top names in the industry!

Men in Milan have been proving their worth at the vast selection of menswear shows held at Menswear Fashion Week this week. Profiling the latest looks for autumn/winter 2007-8 the week has proved that boys are hot right now, and are giving the girls a run for their money in the style stakes.

I was watching Big Brother at the weekend and amongst the furore and debates about issues raised on the programme there was one thing that stood out: Jade's hair. It didn't matter how sad or teary she looked, her hair looked amazing!
As she bowed her head in shame her fringe gently fell into place, and when she lifted her head you could see the beautiful shape. It just goes to prove what a difference a good cut can make.

I was recently telling my mum about a disagreement I had with a hairdresser last year and she told me you should never argue with a policeman or a hairdresser. When I got stopped by a policeman last month for going through a red light while on the mobile reading a map (allegedly!) I argued with him until he threatened to fine me and search the car. Mother's advice is flutter your eyelashes, flirt a little and they're bound to let you off. But what about a hairdresser?

As anyone that reads my blog knows, I haven’t seen that many hair shows, but after watching Tigi’s amazing presentation prior to its Photographic Competition Awards dinner, any show I see from now on will have a lot to live up to. The theme was realism versus extremism, a simple but effective platform to show some fantastic styles from the commercial to the avant garde. While stunning models strutted their stuff in some beautiful and funky outfits on the catwalk, a 3D visual commentary played on screens on either side, ensuring Tigi’s products were – it felt literally – in the faces of the audience.
