Sassoon still setting standards
When I was in my early teens, my sister took me to Vidal Sassoon (now Sassoon) in Covent Garden to have my hair cut.
I remember the whole experience being something special and feeling like I was really lucky. I also remember my science teacher drawing a picture of my new hair cut on the blackboard, but that is an entirely different story!
At the time I was really shocked that my mates didn't understand the significance of the fact that I had been to Vidal Sassoon.
Since then my views have changed a little and I've learned that there are loads of great hair salons - both independents and groups - but last night, as I sat watching Bruce Masefield and Edward Darley on stage at the Hush Club, it really felt like this was something a bit special.
The audience sat in complete silence, gripped by their every word, as they shared tips, advice, anecdotes and the historical references that had been the inspiration for their new Hot Rod collection.
You can read a full report about the hair - which were more textured and less geometric than you would traditionally expect from Sassoon - on the main site. But I also wanted to share some of their key quotes
- We don't dress hair. The style all comes from the way we cut it.
- Times change so you have to be flexible. For a while we stopped pointing hair, but now it is back.
- A hairstyle is like a construction. If you get it right it will just grow longer and the shape will stay the same.
- We never get off the treadmill - we're always looking to find something new.
- Straightening irons have ruined the art of blow-drying. Get back to drying as it helps you with your craft.
- All looks are just for now. Nothing lasts for ever.
- In the past there have been strong trends. Now it is all about individuality.
- Get ready for a change in the philosophy for colouring hair. It has been bright and brilliantly coloured, so there's only one way to go: stripped back to a more naturel subtle look.
