Celebrating three generations of royal style at fashion rules exhibition Queen Elizabeth 1950s hair   The Royal Family celebrates three generations of stylish women with the new Fashion Rules exhibition at Kensington Palace in London; Her Majesty the Queen, Princess Margaret and Diana, Princess of Wales. Focussing on three distinct eras when these royals were at the forefront of fashion, the exhibition celebrates Queen Elizabeth's 1950s style, Margaret's 70s chic and Diana's iconic 80s looks. But while the exhibition focuses on their wardrobes, we all know that hair is the crowning glory for any look - here we salute the styles that have made these three royals so iconic. HM The Queen Queen Elizabeth's hair hasn't changed too much since the 1950s, which is the era that the exhibition has chosen to focus on for her. Her classic curly style is chic, elegant and  timeless - not to mention the perfect base for crowns, tiaras and the hats that she's so fond of. Her Majesty's hairdresser these days is Ian Carmichael of Royston Blythe, who received a Royal Warrant in February 2012 - believed to be only the second warrant for hairdressing handed out by the monarch.   Princess Margaret 1970s hair   Princess Margaret The exhibition turns to the 60s and 70s as it celebrates Princess Margaret's fashion-forward styles. The Countess of Snowdon was well known for following trends - she was granted much more freedom than her sister the Queen and was therefore able to experiment with more daring looks. As well as controversially flamboyant outfits, Margaret also made a statement with her hair by embracing the daring 'dos so synonymous with swinging London. From long curly falls and bouffant hair pieces to intricate updos, Margaret was never afraid to stand out with her style. With a crowd of bohemian friends in fashion and pop culture circles - including Vidal Sassoon - it's clear to see that Margaret was more obviously inspired by defining trends of each era, rather than sticking to safe, samey styles as generations moved on. Diana, Princess of Wales The exhibition wraps up with a look at the 80s, and who better to sum up the era's style than Diana, Princess of Wales? The undisputed queen of the Sloane Ranger trend, Diana inspired a generation with her floppy 'shy Di' fringe and later, that immaculately blow-dried power coiff. Elegant and era-defining at the same time, Diana's hair was as much a part of her look as shoulder pads, sailor collars and strings of pearls. Voted as the most iconic hairstyle of the last 50 years in a recent survey, Diana's 'do was copied by countless royal wannabes across the globe. Stylist Richard Dalton became Diana's personal hairdresser in 1981 and travelled the world with her; he now lives in Laguna Beach, California and works as a hair photographer.
