Vintage Meets Contemporary Salon Design at Green Mango

Dated: October 6, 2009 10:10 AM

Dated: October 6, 2009 10:10 AM

Green Mango is hardly an obvious name for a hair salon - it's different, it's alternative and it certainly grabs your attention - which perfectly reflects the newly-opened Portsmouth salon.

The salon was designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible so an energy efficient water heater and under-floor heating was installed.

While the look encorporates a hardwood, antique bureau as a reception desk, which stands beside two period piece leather smoking chairs sourced from a flea market, to give a feeling of old meets new to create a welcoming environment with a boutique hotel feel.

The end result is a salon which not only appeals to fashion-conscious locals, but to anyone who wants an eco-friendly salon. "It's vintage meets contemporary," concludes Lorraine.

Creating The Right Environment for Colour Clients

Posted by Kate
Dated: October 5, 2009 2:56 PM

The-Chapel.jpgCreating an environment your clients actually want to spend time in is a crucial part of running a successful hair colour business.

Uncomfortable chairs, no air-conditioning, bad coffee and dead plants in the window hardly make for a calm, luxurious environment.

Amanda Dicker from award-winning group The Chapel, which has salons in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, and Islington, London, agrees that this is crucial.  "These days we don't just offer colour, our guests want more. You either choose to compete on price or on quality of service and experience.

"Be different from your competitors and you will stand out from the crowd.

"If you give the right experience your customers will pay more and you won't have to discount. Creating the right environment and atmosphere is crucial," she says.

Headfirst Create a Modern Mock Tudor Salon

Posted by Kate
Dated: October 2, 2009 2:25 PM

Turning a 20s-built former umbrella factory into a contemporary salon sounds an unenviable challenge, but it was one Jeremy and Sharon Farber of Headfirst, Leeds, took on with fervor and a clear vision. The result is a 1,679sq ft salon over three floors.

"I felt that with some imagination, it could be opened up to create an exciting environment," Says Jeremy. "I liked the mock-Tudor frontage and felt a mix of traditional and contemporary would work well."

While the interior is modern, the colours and materials used complement the exterior, with muted tones on the walls, and dark browns and natural colours throughout.

"I wanted to create a subdued and sophisticated ambiance," Jeremy explains.

Classic but Contemporary Salon Design at Andrea and Achille Hair Group

Posted by Kate
Dated: September 14, 2009 11:00 AM

When Roberto Dicuffa decided he wanted to start his own salon in Oxford as a franchise of the family business the Andrea and Achille Hair Group, he had a clear vision of what he wanted to create.

"I wanted a light, relaxing environment, with a contemporary feel but keeping some of the classic features," he explains. "Our other salons will follow this style but will keep their own identity."

The team chose subtle shades for the main colour scheme - creams, browns and forest green. "We are planning on having this decor for a few years so didn't want to be too funky as it can date quickly. Keeping it neutral means we can add other colours through ornaments, cushions or pictures," Roberto explains.

The 1,076sq ft salon benefits from huge front windows, which flood the salon with daylight. The rest of the salon is lit with simple halogen lights and a large feature chandelier.

Roberto is delighted with his contemporary salon and is most proud of the finishing touches and the attention to detail.

"Many hairdressers wouldn't bother with scented candles or small touches, but I think it makes so much difference and our clients love it," he concludes.

Quality, Luxury and Indulgence at Ken Picton Salon

Posted by Kate
Dated: September 7, 2009 11:32 AM

When Ken Picton opened his original salon in Cardiff Bay in 2000 it was situated in a new £35m development and cost him £400,000 to create. His unique design won him the 2001 Salon Design Award at HJ's British Hairdressing Business Awards.

Measuring 4,000sq ft, it was a stunning salon for clients to visit and staff to work in, but Ken wanted to expand another 2,500sq ft and that refit cost him another £300,000.

"I loved my salon how it was, but I wanted to create a haven of quality, luxury and indulgence with beautiful light and plenty of space," says Ken.

Back to Nature at Mack Chelmsford

Posted by Kate
Dated: September 2, 2009 3:49 PM

With a successful salon in a beautiful waterside location, Andrew and Tina Mack knew they wanted premises that were just as breathtaking for their second Mack salon.

So when a new build on the site of an old car dealership became available in a conservation area of Chelmsford, Essex, they jumped at the chance to turn it into a spacious and beautiful salon.

The pair transformed the empty 2,400sq ft in just nine weeks introducing a clean and neutral colour scheme, with polished ivory floor tiles complementing the neutral walls and ceilings,

In contrast to this, the furniture is finished in walnut and stainless steel for added texture while opaque glass and the slate feature walls add to the salon's sophisticated appearance.

There are 25 styling stations in total, 16 for cutting and styling in the main area of the salon and nine situated in the colour area, which are positioned near the backwash. Each station has a full-length mirror framed in frosted glass partnered with a black leather styling chair.

Andrew and Tina are delighted with the results and he says: "We wanted it to be similar to our Wharf salon but functional and beautiful in its own right. Thanks to our extensive research, I think it is exactly what we have achieved."

A Celebration of Pop Art at Bonce Hair Salon

Posted by Kate
Dated: August 13, 2009 11:58 AM

The trend for simple, white salons might be a practical and cost-effective option, but when it comes to creating the salon of your dreams isn't it better to chase the dream and be a little flamboyant with your ideas?

This is exactly what sales and marketing expert Carl Mitchell, his hairdresser wife Donna, and artistic director Poonam Mehmi have done with Bonce Hair Salon.

There is absolutely nothing minimalist or boring about Bonce Hair Salon in Walsall, West Midlands. It's a Mecca of pop art, retro furniture and candy-style graphics - bringing a breath of fresh air to the surrounding area.

"We wanted a lively, trendy salon with a retro feel in order to offer something different to the usual minimalist look," says Carl.

Loud and Proud Style at Curl up and Dye

Posted by Kate
Dated: July 21, 2009 11:39 AM

Barbarella meets Sergeant Pepper with a dash of Alice Through the Looking Glass thrown in for good measure. It sounds like an assault on the senses, but it works at Curl up and Dye in Witney, Oxfordshire.

The look is the brainchild of owners Lucie Eadon and Luke Meader - with Lucie's actress/writer career and passion for fashion and design, no doubt having a major influence over the eclectic interior.

The concept for Curl up and Dye was born over many business meetings in a local pub, and both Luke and Lucie agreed they wanted a salon that stood out from the 30-odd other hairdressing businesses in the area. They have definitely achieved this.

"It's definitely loud and proud!" says Lucie.

Chic, but definitely not shabby, Stark is the French boudoir-style salon of hairdresser Matthew Stark that stylishly blends old with new.

Elegant but Relaxed Style at KHD Hairdressing

Posted by Kate
Dated: June 5, 2009 4:40 PM

The stunning setting of Dorset lends itself nicely to the elegant, boutique-style salon that is KHD Hairdressing.

A subtle creamy shade on the wall is teamed with lavish purple print wallpaper, which makes an interesting combination.

To add to the salon's calm ambience, feature lighting is positioned over the reception area and spotlights placed above each of the 16 styling stations.

One of the salon's most striking features is the carefully selected furniture. The reception and waiting area includes a round Welonda reception desk with a glass panel behind it - so the salon can be clearly seen by clients when entering, but there is still privacy from the main area.

Karen and Jeff set out to create a salon that met their plush, elegant and relaxed criteria - and it does just that.

Colour Sensation at Imagine Hairdressing

Posted by Kate
Dated: May 22, 2009 3:20 PM

Step into Imagine Hairdressing and you will experience a gorgeous space filled with bright stripes, chrome curves, retro wood effects and colourful lighting.

The result is a warm but elegant pop art feel that reflected owners Lee and Heidi Spencer's strong ideas for the salon. "We wanted to create a colourful, modern and open salon with bags of personality," says Lee.

They also wanted to distance themselves from the minimal style that many salons favour, as Heidi explains: "The space feels less clinical than some other salons. Introducing colour made a massive difference to the end result."

Preserving Heritage at Atelia Salon & Spa

Posted by Alex
Dated: March 30, 2009 10:14 AM

Atelier Salon & Spa in Redbourn, Hertfordshire, is housed in a stunning Grade II listed building, which has retained all its original charm, while offering all the trimmings of a contemporary hairdressing business.

The building's listed status meant certain features couldn't be touched - including the stunning wooden beams in the older parts of the building, which date from 1637.

Creating an overall look that was in keeping with the age of the building and still contemporary was important to owners, Karen Hyam and Lorraine Fletcher. "We had a clear idea of what we wanted to achieve from the beginning, so sourced all the fittings and furniture ourselves and worked closely with the architect," says Karen.

Atlier's entrance area features a bespoke juice bar and reception desk, plus an expanse of retail shelving. Both the juice bar and reception desk are made from oak to a simple design that is modern, yet sympathetic to the traditional style of the building.

The overall result is a blend of original features with a modern, stylish finish, ideal for attracting a broad mix of clients

Salon Interiors: Success through teamwork at The Amber Room

Posted by Alex
Dated: February 18, 2009 10:41 AM

amber-room1.jpg

The creation of Amber Room in Caterham, Surrey was truly a collaborative effort. The business was the brainchild of Corinne Lacaze, a hairdresser with 14 years' industry experience, who saw the potential of a local salon.

Corinne found a further five business partners to plough money into the venture. It took all hands on deck to whip the premises into shape, but after two months of 18-hour days the former arts and crafts store was transformed into a luxury hairdressing salon.

Designing the interior was also a group effort, with the owners researching various looks and then pooling ideas. Chocolate brown and cream hues were chosen to create an upmarket, chic, but warm and welcoming feel.

A sense of character is also created through the split levels within the salon. The styling area at the front of the premises is bright and spacious, while the technical section upstairs offers clients privacy. Meanwhile, the backwash area is hidden from view and designed to enhance relaxation with muted lighting and soft music.

Ten out of Ten at the b.ten Salon

Posted by Alex
Dated: January 28, 2009 12:54 PM

When Jamie Hill first set eyes on a multi-level building in Swansea city centre that had formerly been occupied by a travel agent, he was awash with inspiration.

The spacious premises, set in a bustling location, simply begged to be turned into a pampering retreat for clients wanting to escape the rush, stresses and strains of everyday life. And with the help of owner Simon George, a self-made entrepreneur, he was able to turn his dream into a reality known as b.ten.

Jamie cherry-picked ideas gleaned from nine years working in the industry and listening to clients, and opted for a modern salon with a casual ambience.

An antique French retro chic theme was the aim and this was achieved by blending old with new, and mixing calming tones with splashes of bright colour. "It's something every age group can relate to and appreciate," says Jamie.

Sleek, Streamlined and Seductive at Andrew Brown

Posted by Alex
Dated: January 15, 2009 9:57 AM

Contemporary to the core, the Andrew Brown salon in the capital's up-and-coming London Bridge district fully exploits the potential of a new build to make an impact.

Andrew's partner, John Feguson, has a fashion background and used his extensive contacts in shopfitting and interior design, combined with seven weeks of frenzied activity delivered a clean, cool, über-stylish statement of intent.

"Above all, we wanted to create a swanky salon, one that stands out from the crowd," says Andrew, who has been hairdressing for 13 years. "What we've achieved visually reflects our creative energies and also our experiences in the hair business."

andrew-brown-interiors-1.jpgCentral to the highly successful, open-plan design is a striking colour palette, which gives an atmosphere of intimacy and unlimited luxury. Predominately white, with accents of silver and brown, the visual message is high-end, unflinchingly modern, yet timeless.

The most expensive part of the project was the opening party, which saw no expense spared, and involved a red carpet, free bar, and dancing into the small hours. "We wanted to make a splash, the area is becoming a magnet for new businesses from retail outlets to new media and we wanted our brand to grab everyone's attention," says Andrew.

Quality and Detail at Gary Ingham Hairdressing

Posted by Alex
Dated: December 11, 2008 3:52 PM

Step ino the Gary Ingham salon and you're transported into a world of boutique charm. Nestled in a quiet cut-through in leafy Hampstead, London, the salon has been transformed into an elegant, tranquil environment designed to appeal to actors, American ex-pats and wealthy professionals.

"We very much wanted to create a space that had the feel of a high-end boutique - something that would complement and reflect Gary's obsession with quality and detail in hairdressing. We didn't want anything trendy because it dates as soon as you open your doors - and we didn't want anything too funky, but something elegant, timeless and tranquil."

Sean and Gary are delighted with the results. Says Gary: "Just like one's hair or clothes, the spaces we create are a reflection of ourselves. We hope the design of the salon will appeal to the client who gets what we are doing here - creating a high-end, high-finish, boutique-type space where we can practise the art of hairdressing in luxurious, intimate surroundings."

Fresh Salon Design at Cream in Cheltenham

Posted by Alex
Dated: December 5, 2008 12:13 PM

Earlier this year salon owner Scott Smurthwaite decided to revamp the salon interior of his Cheltenham-based salon, Cream.

Scott's intention was to create a more modern environment, with an airy, open plan, rather than a compartmentalised design.

"The project was inspired by a desire to make more money," he says. "The funny thing is that we're actually down a chair since the refurbishment, but this has resulted in a far better ambience in the salon and enhanced client and stylist comfort, so business has improved rather than dipped."

By presenting local company Isherwood Design of Cheltenham with a blank canvas to work on, Scott was able to cherry pick from a raft of fresh ideas put forward by a team with a reputation forged outside the hairdressing sector and he is more than delighted with his new-look contemporary salon.

"Whatever theme you give your salon it should reflect your personality, attitude and philosophy, ensuring it is interpreted with conviction, otherwise it just becomes a

Classic meets Contemporary at Shine Hair Salon

Posted by Alex
Dated: November 4, 2008 1:45 PM

In December 2007 after being self-employed for six years and with numerous awards under his belt, Jason Paget, a hairdresser since 1986, and a veteran of the most prestigious hair salons in Bristol including Central Studio and Toni & Guy, decided the time was right to start his own business

Shine Hair Salon's high-end contemporary look has been influenced by Jason's personal tastes as well as practical considerations alongside; interiors magazines, the internet and the current vogue for boutique hotels. He's been careful to position the salon so that it appeals to a broad demographic, male and female, old and young.

"Our clients' age range is from seven months to 70," says Jason. "I've attempted to appeal to everyone by mixing design decades, materials and textures in quite a bold way, while still keeping things clean, functional and above all welcoming."

The neutral colour scheme, selected because it won't date, is illuminated with energy-saving lighting. The contrast between the gold, textured wallpaper in the front reception area and bathroom and the expanse of white paint introduces an element of luxury, but the overall impression is brilliantly businesslike. The building's original wood flooring has been painstakingly restored; both beautiful and practical it blends seamlessly with all the other elements of the scheme.

Jason's first foray into salon ownership has been a positive experience on all levels. "My best decision was opening the salon, my worst, not doing it sooner," he says.

Calm and Comfort at Ego Hair and Beauty

Posted by Alex
Dated: October 9, 2008 11:49 AM

The moment they strolled past the empty shop, Carly Ryder and Lorraine Haskins knew they had found the site for their first hairdressing business venture. Situated near a university, in an up-and-coming area with nearby parking facilities, the empty shell was ripe for transformation.

"We loved the natural light coming into the space as there are so many windows, it really was the deal clincher for us," says Carly. "Everything just seemed to fit and, most importantly, it felt right."

Beauty rooms were built from scratch and all the plumbing and electrics had to be installed, as well as a new floor. But creating a comfortable, stylish environment was important to Carly and Lorraine, who ensured the salon boasted plenty of features.

"We wanted a calming ambience so that our clients would have the ultimate experience - a modern yet chilled salon," explains Carly.

Creating an environment for a broad range of clients isn't easy. From students and professionals to ladies who lunch - designing an appropriate atmosphere is a challenge, and one that salon owners Jeni and Nicolas Aldridge took in their stride.

"We wanted the salon, Hush Hush, to be different from all the corporate businesses we see on the high street," says Jeni. "Our aim was to create a place where clients could relax, be pampered and indulge their senses."

Jeni and Nicolas are delighted with the new salon, and describe their business as chic boutique.

"The most important element was to offer a salon where the clients are taken away from the stresses of everyday life and given an experience, not just a haircut - and we've done just that!"

Monochrome Manpower at essensuals MEN Billericay

Posted by Kate
Dated: October 1, 2008 1:35 PM

Men's grooming has come of age, with destination barbershops and exclusively male salons making their mark in London and beyond.

The latest convert to the cause is HJ's 2007 Men's Hairdresser of the Year, Jim Shaw, who is responsible for opening the first-ever essensuals MEN, not in the midst of the urban jungle, but in Billericay, Essex.

Committed to bringing a West End feel to the suburbs, Jim has a wealth of experience and a well-respected reputation in the town through his other essensuals salon.

"With the unisex salon doing well, opening essensuals MEN was a logical step for me," explains Jim. "My aim has been to create a complete grooming experience in an exclusive, luxury environment for the style-conscious male in search of more than a quick trim."

Settling on a former travel agency in a prime position on the high street, and conveniently located almost directly opposite his unisex salon, Jim put his masterplan into action.

Six weeks later, after the refurbishment overseen by project manager Nick Pay, he was open for business.

As the first-ever essensuals MEN, Jim had design carte blanche, with the bars, clubs, salons and sleek hotel interiors of Hong Kong the inspiration for a masculine colour scheme of black gloss, cappuccino and stone; ultra-cool, minimalist and high impact, but with warmth and character.

Glorious Grandeur at Barbara Daley Salon

Posted by Kate
Dated: September 21, 2008 5:21 PM

Barbara Daley is a familiar name in the hairdressing industry. An experienced businesswoman who opened her first salon in Liverpool in 1990 followed by a second one six months later, she has a host of celebrity clients to her name.

But when she decided to relocate to an 1850s Grade 2 listed building earlier this year, her patience and perseverance were put to the test.

Initially attracted by six-metre high ceilings and elegant stone Doric columns, the hairdresser's designs on creating an exquisite but modern salon were soon dampened as the reality of the huge project ahead became apparent.

Red tape and planning issues meant took two years before work could even begin, but once the initial problems were overcome, Barbara liaised closely with architects Austin Smith Lord to create a space that not only looked good and architecturally brilliant, but worked as a salon.

"We had to make the salon inviting, not imposing, and yet keep the grandness of its features," Barbara explains. "We stressed that despite the grandeur of the salon, it wasn't to be designed to be elitist. It had to be warm and welcoming to all our clients."

The salon was opened by celebrity client Coleen McCloughlin in March 2008 and the hair work certainly seems to have paid off.

Bohemian Beauty at Charlotte Murray

Posted by Kate
Dated: September 20, 2008 3:48 PM

The Charlotte Murray salon in Muswell Hill is a beacon for Bohemian design and beautiful hair. The premises, a former interior furnishing shop, has been richly transformed into a decadent space perfectly in tune with the tastes of the sophisticated north Londoner.

The thriving metropolitan 'village' location is a mecca for niche boutiques, and Charlotte has shaped her salon's identity accordingly. "Muswell Hill is a thriving commercial area, with bars, restaurants and high-end shops. Being on the Broadway was too good a prospect to pass up," she says.

After 15 years working as a session stylist, Charlotte decided to set up her own salon to share her wealth of hair knowledge and simultaneously provide a more solid future for herself and her family. Four months ago, her dream became a reality.

"Creating an artistic, individual, and beautiful place in which to work and develop - a space that draws like-minded people in - has been amazing. There's lots more I want to do, and this will give me the perfect platform to work from," she explains.

French Boutique Style at Lara Johnson Lifestyle

Posted by Kate
Dated: September 17, 2008 1:32 PM

Husband and wife team Lara Johnson and Dom Capel wanted to challenge the simplistic style and clean lines that many modern salons have adopted. Their vision was to create a salon with an eclectic mix of French boutique and lavish gentleman's club.

With their new salon located just down the road from their original salon in Swansea, and double its size, the couple wanted a new look. "We wanted to create an ambience unmatched in Wales and give it the same feel as our home," says Lara.

Their team completely transformed the three-storey building - formerly a simple retail and residential space. "The building was completely gutted from the front elevation backwards," adds Lara. This created a blank canvas for their design, which they devised with the help of designer Marc Smith.

At a cost of £200,000 the project, self-financed by Lara and Dom, represented a big risk.  However, having spent 18 months in the planning stage, and having a clear idea of what they wanted to achieve the duo managed to avoid any unexpected problems.

The finished product reflects the vast amount of time and attention to detail that has been dedicated to the salon and certainly achieves their objective of a salon full of luxury and unlike any other in Wales.

Dated: September 2, 2008 12:22 PM

Hairdresser Danny Oh left his native Singapore to train at Vidal Sassoon, and decided to make his life here.

His eponymously titled salon opened in London's capital of urban cool, Islington's Camden Passage. A commercial area defined by high-end boutique shopping, and a celebrated antiques market, Danny has blended in with the locals with his flair for funky décor and display of quirky collectables, striking a chord with young urban professionals who appreciate quality, style and a good haircut.

Formerly an interior design showroom, the refit was achieved in less than six weeks and the result is an original and witty take on eclectic urban chic. Danny chose to work with Reedesign, a highly respected local firm of architects.

John Fraser Jenkins - Where Calm Meets Contemporary

Posted by Kate
Dated: July 28, 2008 4:24 PM

At John Fraser Jenkins in Cheam, Surrey, owners Jane and John Jenkins wanted to create an environment where clients would feel pampered and be able to relax in contemporary, luxurious surroundings.

The couple had been running the salon for six years and, despite its success, they both felt it needed a fresh look.

"We felt we needed to give the salon a lift to maintain our edge," says John. "Although the old interior was still looking good, we wanted some new energy."

One of the most prominent design elements is a feature wall, which has a rippling, undulating appearance created using thin strips of wood painted in high-gloss, white paint.

"The feature wall looks particularly beautiful when reflected in the mirrors - it helps make the whole atmosphere relaxing and peaceful," John adds.

The aim of the design was to ensure client comfort while also creating significant 'curb appeal', attracting passers-by into the salon. So far the blend of tranquility and contemporary elegance appears to be working.

Shabby Chic Shines At The Lounge Hair and Beauty

Posted by Kate
Dated: July 23, 2008 4:26 PM

When Michelle Gowlett chose a prime location in Brentwood, Essex, for her first salon The Lounge, she used the pages of HJ to inpire her to achieve the shabby-chic style she visualised.

"I wanted to get away from the clinical black and white lines and go for a more homely feel," says Michelle.

"I chose pink and brown because they're my favourite colours, and the combination is different from colour schemes used in many modern salons."

Michelle worked with a lighting specialist to ensure the salon had a natural feel and selected striking Harlequin wallpaper as the focal point of the salon.

"I wanted some pattern on the walls to create warmth and comfort," she adds. "It is such an interesting feature it actually attracts clients into the salon."

The Lounge takes a modern twist on classic style with statement pieces, such as a pink candelabra and a chaise longue in the reception area. Michelle describes her style as very chic, but not over the top.

"The overall design aims to create a classic and relaxed ambience appealing to the over-thirties; however, the salon retains a trendy side with its patterned wallpaper and shabby chic look, attracting younger clients too."

A New ID for Identity UK - Salon Interiors

Posted by Kate
Dated: July 21, 2008 12:42 PM

The launch of Identity UK was a dream come true for co-owner Tony Hegarty. "I dreamt of a salon that boasted a team of hairdressers trained to deal with all hair types and textures while treating every client as an individual," he says of the funky salon in London's Shoreditch.

Identity UK was launched seven years ago, but moved to larger premises in the area to cope with its growing client list. The aim was to give the new salon a more elegant, refined look. One of the main priorities was to incorporate a dispensary that doubled up as a feature.

"Our old dispensary was very small, so this time we wanted lots of space and somewhere to display colour tubes. We commissioned a Perspex grid that would do all this for us," adds Tony.

The result is the L'Oréal Professionnel Color Lab. It has been designed as a colour mixing bar where clients can watch their personalised colour being created.

Another main feature is the Mizani Consultation Area. "This is a UK first. It's a dedicated space which allows clients to relax on deluxe sofas and have a personal consultation with their stylist," says Tony.

Two elements of the refit that didn't go to plan were the budget and time schedule. Not only did the original budget escalate from £45,000 to £83,000, but the refurbishment, originally scheduled to take four months, took six months.

However, Tony is not too disappointed by these issues. "There are aspects I would do differently.

"I wouldn't choose the same builders because they over-ran, and I wouldn't use a client as an architect because when work went wrong I couldn't shout as much as I would with a stranger!" he adds.

Tantrum Salon - Doing it for the Kids

Posted by Kate
Dated: July 8, 2008 5:05 PM

For many mums and dads, one of their biggest nightmares can be taking a young child to the hairdressers, but at the ironically named Tantrum it should be a dream experience - for parents and children.

Every element of the salon in King's Road, London, has been designed to ensure young clients are entertained while their hair is cut, and parents get to chill out while it's happening.

Tantrum co-owner Latasha Malik says: "We wanted Tantrum to be more than just a hairdressing salon - we wanted it to be a place where kids enjoyed hanging out and parents could have a fantastic experience too.

"We knew exactly what we wanted and our designer brought it together in a very special way. We knew we needed to create something unique. When you walk into Tantrum the experience is quite different - the look and feel was thoroughly thought through."

Cool, Sleek US Style - The Doves Studio

Posted by Kate
Dated: July 7, 2008 4:43 PM

The perception of a salon that's situated just minutes away from the beach in Santa Monica, California, is that it will be cool, sleek and oozing with style - and The Doves Studio is exactly that.

Owned by Sonya and Christopher Dove, creative directors for Wella Professionals in the US, The Dove Studio is their first US salon, but the pair had a clear idea of what they wanted to achieve.

"We wanted to create a studio that reflected our strong culture of education and style," says Sonya.

And style is something it's dripping in, with a combination of fresh white walls, a high, black ceiling with various suspended levels and bold blasts of colour throughout, to complete the look.

Contemporary Meets Classic at Chop Barbers

Posted by Kate
Dated: June 17, 2008 2:05 PM

John McMahon recognised a gap in the market that he thought he could fill back in the late 1990s. "While working in hairdressing salons across London and the south of England I saw there was definitely a demand for a modern barber's salon that could accommodate all fashion cuts and high quality traditional cuts for men," says John.

Following an extra stint of training in traditional barber skills, John opened his first Chop salon in Cheddar, Somerset. This was joined four years later by a women's salon in the same area with additional men's salons opening in Wells and then, earlier this year, in Street.

The aim with the latest salon was to create an upbeat, forward-thinking environment. John says: "All too often, men's barbers are basic chair and mirror set-ups.

"We wanted to create a warm and welcoming experience for our clients. I learned a lot from my time in London, where you have to sell a salon because the market is so competitive."

The Street location was a former workwear store and needed a complete refurbishment and John worked closely with London-based designer Aaron Probyn to introduce some domestic elements to the salon environment.

One of the most distinctive features of the salon is a small internet cafè and skateboard shop, with brightly designed skateboards displayed on the walls, adding to the salon's contemporary flavour.

"With this salon I wanted to create a space that people enjoyed visiting and working in. The look was very important as I wanted to create a defined identity that could be adapted for the other salons at a later date," he adds.

The Legal Considerations For Franchising

Research has shown that salons are increasingly part of national chains or franchises.

All franchises operate differently and so it is difficult to make any generalisations, but the key tip is to ensure you have read and fully understand all the issues regarding staff and employment in the franchise before you begin.

David Wright explains the employment considerations surrounding franchises.

Peace and Calm at Hush - Salon Interior

Posted by Kate
Dated: June 17, 2008 11:06 AM

Having built up a thriving salon in Edinburgh city centre, Donald Doolan had clear ideas about what he wanted from his second venture - Hush.

"My brother John and I decided to open in Livingston, West Lothian. Demographic research showed the average age in the area to be just 28 - giving us a great pool of potential target clients," he explains.

"The location, inside a major shopping centre, is ideal. It's the hub of the town and people come here to visit the shops, the cinema and all the big local attractions - the passing footfall is fantastic."

Keen to make an impact in the new space - a 2,500sq ft, two-storey site - Donald spent six weeks working with a team to transform the empty shell into a slick, spacious lifestyle salon with a focus on health and wellbeing.

Finished in chic shades of cream and brown, with coffee-coloured Karndean flooring throughout, Donald was adamant that Hush's feel should complement its name.

With that in mind, the salon's design is cool, crisp and clean, with dedicated areas devoted to hair, beauty, nails and colour, affording clients privacy and relaxation.

O'Sullivan: Making a Statement on London's South Bank

Posted by Kate
Dated: June 10, 2008 9:06 AM

When brothers Martin and Tim O'Sullivan decided to open their fifth O'Sullivan Concept Salon, they looked to London's South Bank - an area that has seen some serious reinvestment in recent years.

After exploring numerous sites in the area they came across the ideal spot: on a new development called The Blue Fin building, which is next door to the Tate Modern.

The Blue Fin building proved the perfect spot for a salon, with more than 8,000 people due to reside in the block by the end of year, including a media business employing 3,500 people, "of which 70% are female - our target clients," adds Martin.

Because the shop was part of a new building, it was the perfect blank canvas to work with. "It was an empty shell and needed absolutely everything - ceilings, walls, sprinklers, the lot," says Martin.

As this would be the group's new flagship salon, they opted for a fresh look that would fit in with its new state-of-the-art surroundings.

A company called Circle Thirtysix was drafted in to complete the project. It managed the entire development, right through to handing over the keys of the finished shop. "We decided on a classic look with an aesthetic quality to it, which was especially important being next to the Tate Modern," says Martin.

The result is a bright and airy salon that makes full use of its 1,000sq ft.

Boutique Style at Mahogany Manchester

Posted by Kate
Dated: June 6, 2008 2:10 PM

With successful salons in London, Oxford and Australia, the Mahogany group was keen to expand, and with franchisee Neil Atkinson hailing from Manchester, the city was the obvious choice.

In keeping with the theme of the other Mahogany salons, Neil wanted a clean, flowing, modern and warm boutique-style salon - which was achieved in just 10 weeks.

"We do have a corporate look and there is a definite connection between each salon but each space has its own feel and character suitable to its surroundings, location and building type," says Neil .

With the help of Reis Design, Neil and co. created an open-plan with salon with dark wood flooring contrasting against white walls with a splash of acid green for interest.

The salon's focal point is two glass screens displays, which display the company's imagery.

"It's predominately an open-plan space, using clever design to separate the backwash," Neil adds.

"Feature glass screens are covered with giant images from our most recent collection and separate the main floor from the backwash and office areas.

"The artwork is translucent, allowing light to flood into the rear of the salon, creating a comfortable environment for clients at the backwash."

A Heavenly Hair Experience at The Chapel

Posted by Kate
Dated: May 28, 2008 12:27 PM

The Chapel has a reputation for style and ambience and its interior design showcases an appreciation of English heritage. Its first salon in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, does brisk business in a former place of worship - the eponymous chapel.

In December 2007, a former butcher's shop in Islington was extended to include the next door pub, in the trendy environs of Upper Street, and became the site for The Chapel's latest venture.

Billie Crago and Georgia Denton, along with co-owners Amanda and Toby Dicker, are confident that their new salon delivers The Chapel concept without compromise, with the inclusion of a spacious colour studio and open planning.

"We've taken our existing salon design criteria and added a London edge. In doing so we've succeeded in creating something in tune with the metropolitan mindset," Billie says.

Open-plan yet offering privacy; spacious but comfortable - these were the priorities for Andrea Beers when she and co-owner, Jennifer Smith began planning their first salon venture together.

They began with a brand new building that was little more than a concrete shell and spent six months realising their vision. The result was exactly what Andrea and Jennifer had imagined.

"Our main aim was to create an area that clients would feel comfortable in, but with lots of space so they wouldn't feel over-crowded."

Fun and Eclectic - Adee Phelan Salon

Posted by Kate
Dated: May 14, 2008 12:44 PM

Adee Phelan has led a varied hairdressing career. After starting at Lee Stafford and winning HJ's 2000 Men's Hairdresser of the Year, he was a star on TV's The Salon and one of the founders of the award-winning Bloww salon, before setting up his own eponymous enterprise in London's Covent Garden.

Adee spotted the former Duffer of St George clothing store and stripped it back to its bare bones.

"I wanted to move away from the corporate look and create a fun, eclectic and modern interior where clients could enjoy their salon experience," he explains.

Adee knew exactly what he wanted to achieve and spent a year planning the project. Taking inspiration from boutique hotels and stylish loft apartments, Adee incorporated interesting design elements to create a quirky space.

An old-fashioned bed was cut in half to create a sofa, a pink lacquered piano acts as a hair station and mannequins were turned into light installations. One of the biggest jobs was designing the ceiling around the reception chandelier.

"This salon was designed to appeal to everyone as there are so many elements to suit every discerning taste," he says.

Boutique chic at Headlines Elite

Posted by Kate
Dated: May 9, 2008 10:28 AM

The late Michael Charlesworth’s flagship salon venture Headlines Elite in the heart of Sheffield has proved a clever move – not only is there an absence of hairdressing competition in the area, but also the salon occupies a prime location in a city that’s riding high on a regeneration boom.

The potential of the first-floor shell with massive windows overlooking the mall was obvious, and Michael embarked on an ambitious two-month refurbishment.

In order to function effectively as the group’s flagship salon and the Headlines Elite Training Academy, it was essential to create a flexible space."We wanted a theory and demonstration area that could convert back into a salon format in minutes," said Michael.

"We achieved this by utilising the centre of the salon and installing ingenious, bespoke, moveable units linked to flexible electricity points, a retractable screen linked to a DVD, and computer links into a central pod."

For the look, Michael was inspired by his experience of boutique hotels worldwide and has created a balance of indulgence, luxury and wow factor tempered by classic design considerations.

The salon attracts a diverse clientele including yummy mummies, silver surfers, metropolitans, metrosexuals and students. Strategic viewing spaces are incorporated around the salon for displaying images from recent photographic collections.

This haven of luxury and contemporary hairdressing has a tasteful, but distinctive décor. Off-white walls showcase the ambient lighting effects, and combine with imagery for an art gallery feel. Retro-patterned wallpaper contrasts perfectly with cream, painted walls while the porcelain floor combines polished beauty with hard-wearing properties.

The Sheffield-based business, run by hairdresser Claire Flack and her boyfriend Paul Cox, brings hair, beauty and fashion together in a bid to offer clients the ultimate indulgent experience.

"We wanted to appeal to anyone looking for that special, full service," Paul explains. So they set about creating a salon with the full works.

An effervescent location was vital to the couple, so when they discovered vacant premises housed in a sparkling plaza surrounded by plush apartments, stylish bars, and trendy restaurants, they set about making their dream a reality.

Hip and Happening - Percy and Reed Salon Interior

Posted by Kate
Dated: April 25, 2008 1:58 PM

Venture through the doors of Percy and Reed, London, and the salon’s New York loft-style interior instantly hits you.

A high ceiling and mezzanine level draw the eye up, giving the Great Portland Street salon a sense of space, while the décor and furnishings fuse to create the impression of a large living space.

"We wanted the salon to look creative, but not feel pretentious," says Adam Reed, who opened the shop with business partner Paul Percy.

Building a warm, friendly business aimed at professional people through to A-list celebrities was the next, natural step and with clear ideas about the look they wanted to achieve, the pair took full design responsibility.

"You always hear that people feel uncomfortable going into salons," Adam explains. "We wanted the salon to feel like someone’s home and not be led by one specific design, colour or inspiration.

"We wanted to create a homely, individual style and incorporate elements of design that everyone can relate to."

The former clothes shop was gutted and the pair spent eight months whipping it into shape. Set against the idea of a uniform colour scheme, they decided to bring each area to life using features like wallpaper or furnishings.

Upstairs, where hair colouring takes places, a practical dove grey slate lines the floor, intricately-patterned grey and white wallpaper depicting a woodland theme is reflected in the mirrors and a large, black, soft fabric sofa makes up the seating area.

Chic and Stylish - Savvy Salon

Posted by Kate
Dated: April 15, 2008 2:33 PM

When demand dictated that Melanie Jefferson should move her thriving hairdressing business, Savvy, to a bigger site, she decided to invest in buying a property she could make her own.

After successfully bidding at auction for a 200-year-old building in the pretty coastal town of Whitehaven, Cumbria, she began the process of transforming the run-down premises into a slick, stylish salon.

Working with her husband, her brother and an architect, Melanie completed the conversion in four months to realise her aim of an open salon that made clients feel relaxed and welcome.

"We’ve had a great response to the salon from clients and the press, and are so excited that this vision has become a successful reality," says Melanie.

"Client comfort with a luxurious appearance was our priority with this design and it’s all come together beautifully."

A Touch of Theatre - Buzby and Blue Hairdressing

Posted by Kate
Dated: April 1, 2008 3:01 PM

Nigel Faulkner and Christopher Friend have brought their own sense of theatre to historic Chichester with Buzby and Blue Hairdressing.

The former picture and framing gallery with a double frontage has been transformed into a contemporary work of art. It has a sympathetic and stylish interior that seamlessly incorporates both traditional and cutting-edge elements to create a light, bright and subtly sensual environment, with a luxurious feeling of space.

Designed by the pair in partnership with Gary Kentell of Green Circles Design and Management, the transformation process took eight weeks of intense work to complete.

“The challenge of mixing a character building with a modern design ethos has been a significant one, and we’re thrilled with the results. Client feedback has been terrific,” comments Christopher.

All That Glitters - Tremayne Salon

Posted by Kate
Dated: April 1, 2008 9:24 AM

Tremayne Salon had occupied its current premises for 16 years when owner Alfredo Santo decided it was time for a radical change of image.

Inspired by the salon's bulging trophy cabinet, Alfredo and his interior designer set about creating a salon around the theme precious metals, which work both aesthetically and practically by minimising reflection off the hair.

"Gold, silver and bronze awards were the initial inspiration," says Alfredo. "Plus, I share an Italian heritage and sensibility with Marie Blackmore, my interior designer from La Maison Interiors, which we explored by incorporating aged glass, stone and stainless steel."

The complete overhaul to make the most of the natural light and blend flair with functionality by incorporating focal points including aged glass features, metallic fabric and leather panelling and iconic pieces of Philippe Starck furniture, took just 10 days to complete, but was the result of meticulous planning.

"Our aim was to create a more cosmopolitan feel and to use the space better. The result is a larger and brighter salon that functions superbly for staff and clients alike," he adds.

Quirky and Boudoir-Style - Mollie Sugden Hairdressing

Posted by Kate
Dated: March 19, 2008 2:24 PM

Mollie Sugden Hairdressing can’t fail to draw the eye.

Set in London’s bustling Brick Lane, the quirky, homely salon is as impressive on the outside as it is inside and its main shutter – a grid of Mollie Sugden heads painted by a local graffiti artist in a pop art style – is particularly eye-catching.

The design, the brainchild of owners Carla Meireles De Lemos and Lee Cook, sets the funky, trend-setting vibe of the salon that the lifelong best friends wanted to emulate.

"We wanted a design that would feel at home in Brick Lane and somewhere that enabled us to show off our personalities and make for a fun work environment," explains Carla.

The result is a boudoir, opulent look that is not too feminine or uninviting to male clients. Rich aubergine walls are complemented by a durable, grey slate tiled floor, and an old-fashioned, suede-effect, black chaise longue in the waiting area adds to the alternative, regal flavour.

"I was really conscious of the fact that the design we were going for could end up looking tacky, but we’ve achieved what we were looking for," Carla adds. "The welcoming, homely feel in sumptuous surroundings makes for a fun and relaxing experience."

Smart and Understated - Densie Duke Salon

Posted by Kate
Dated: March 14, 2008 10:35 AM

Some people might be daunted by the prospect of turning a former Iceland Foods testing and development centre into a chic, hairdressing salon. But not Denise Duke.

The hairdresser thrived on the challenge of transforming the Chester-based site – originally designed as four separate retail units – into a smart, understated, high-quality salon.

"I wanted an Italian, sharp feel with nothing too gimmicky. The salon had to be comfortable, with an ergonomically-designed interior," Denise explains.

With the help of designer Peter Saville, Denise chose a neutral, off-white hue to give the salon a crisp clean look that is contrasted by dark salon furniture, brightly coloured Bumble and bumble products and stunning flower arrangements

Other quirky touches that make the salon stand out form the competition include a contemprary crystal chandelier in reception the wall hanging in the ladies’ lavatory and the floating wenge wood dressing/sink unit.

"I am extremely pleased, especially as I have never put a salon together before. I chose many features through gut feeling, what I personally like and what I thought my clients would like. The result was exactly as I had imagined it."

Unique and Tranquil - The Courtyard

Posted by Kate
Dated: March 7, 2008 12:21 PM

Step into James Christofi salon Courtyard in Twickenham and you’re transported into a sleek world that brings the outside indoors.

Exposed brickwork, an ivy-clad wall and a glass roof work in harmony to create a natural atmosphere and help the salon live up to its name.

But the premises didn’t always look this way. In fact it took James seven months to transform the shop from a salon in 'bad way' to the unique and tranquil environment you see today.

Taking ideas from bars, clubs, coffee shops and salons worldwide James realised his vision and, as the salon name suggests, it is the courtyard section, housed at the back of the salon, that most catches the eye.

Flooded with daylight through a glass roof, it has a natural stone floor, coffee bar and a comfortable leather sofa nestled against exposed brickwork, a fish tank and plasma screens.

"I wanted to create a relaxed antidote to the inevitable delays of a busy salon," says James. "Clients can enjoy refreshments while gazing into a marine tank – which also serves as a dividing wall to my office – or watch a programme on one of the plasma screens.

"At night, it is a relaxing place to sit and chill out while waiting for a friend or a stylist."

Style And Mass Appeal - Clipso London

Posted by Kate
Dated: February 26, 2008 11:41 AM

When Darren Fowler opened his Clipso London franchise the challenge he faced was creating a salon with mass-market appeal, but a distinct look and atmosphere that will set it apart from the competition.

"Being in the hub of Fitzrovia, our clientele includes media people, nurses, doctors and even students – we have a real mixture of clients and we needed to appeal to them all," he explains.

The site, just a few doors down from his old salon, was formerly an art gallery and proved the perfect blank canvas for him to set about realising his vision.

He adds: "I wanted to create an urban space, with a different atmosphere for each section.

"Clients first enter a light, welcoming reception and retail area; then they walk through to a boutique-style cutting area, which has a dressing-room feel; they then walk down five concrete steps into the gallery, which has a New York loft apartment effect."

Simple And Relaxing - Indigo

Posted by Kate
Dated: February 26, 2008 10:58 AM

After honing his creativity as a session stylist around the world, Neil Hopkins decided to use his hairdressing skills in his own salon by putting down roots in Leamington Spa.

His salon, Indigo, was an existing hairdressing business but Neil wasn't impressed with the interior design.

"The salon decor was coffee and cream and very tired around the edges. It was in a prime location however; right in the town centre, so I knew I could give it a new injection of life," Neil explains.

Neil had a clear idea of what he wanted to achieve - somewhere relaxing for clients and staff - and it took just one month to transform the Grade II listed, two-storey salon into his vision.

A simple colour scheme of cool greens, pale greys, silvers, beige tones and natural woods is perfectly complemented by classic recessed halogen spotlights with tilt action above the styling stations, and practical wall lights.

Special care has been taken with the waiting area, which has been designed as a shopping area, to encourage clients to touch, feel and play with products when they come into the salon. As well as the large reception desk, the area features tub-style waiting chairs for clients.

Neil is delighted with his finished look, which he describes as easy and relaxed. He adds: "The salon is really a place that both clients and staff can enjoy visiting, and although it has a laid-back ambience, everyone knows exactly what is going on."

Italian style Meets Manhattan Chic - Cataldo's

Posted by Kate
Dated: February 14, 2008 1:55 PM

Set in a landmark building in an affluent area of Australia’s capital city, Canberra, the new Cataldo’s Salon offers its well-heeled clients an elegantly inviting environment.

"The fit-out of the new salon maintains the Cataldo tradition of style, quality, class and accessibility, which have been vital factors in strengthening our image and reputation and keeping Cataldo’s at the forefront of the industry," says salon manager Karen Spradau, who runs the new business in partnership with Emilio and Angelo Cataldo.

Leading architects, designers, metal artists and builders were called upon to transform the new, empty premises, working to a brief that would combine design inspired by Manhattan’s chic Fifth Avenue style with Italian influences.

The colour scheme throughout is rich in shades of white, chocolate brown and warm amber, with flourishes of aluminium, copper and chrome.

While the bespoke reception desk features a backlit panel of opulent honey onyx marble, embedded into which is the Cataldo group’s large signature ‘C’ whick glows in the entrance and sets the tone for the understated glamour of the rest of the salon’s design.

"The best choice we made was to add the backlit onyx marble features – the stone is a natural piece of art in itself," Karen says. "This state-of-the-art salon offers uncompromising standards of comfort to match our professional service."

'Chic And On-Trend' - Saint Salons

Posted by Kate
Dated: February 6, 2008 11:16 AM

When Matthew Cole and Richard Lane decided to open their first hairdressing salon, their aim was to create the most client-friendly environment possible.

"We wanted a relaxed atmosphere and a friendly vibe," says Richard. "We wanted a salon that was stylish yet simple and one that everybody would love being in."

The site itself is based in a modern apartment block in an area of Birmingham that has undergone major redevelopment.

As it was a new building they had a blank canvas to work with and set about designing a stylish salon, inspired by their own apartment.

“Everyone always comments on how warm and friendly our apartment is and how at home they feel,” Richard adds.

Using a combination of neutral creams, a striking red feature wall, a dark wood reception desk and mirrors and dark leather sofa and chairs, the pair created a chic and on-trend salon, that has a home-from-home feel that stops it being intimidating.

But do they have any regrets? "I wouldn't opt for white basin chairs again - stains are a nightmare!" Richard explains.

'Decadent Yet Practical' - Haze@No 10

Posted by Kate
Dated: February 6, 2008 11:02 AM

Cyndy Hay had an ambitious brief when she set about creating her new salon Haze - it was to be something that had never been seen before the area.

"I wanted an intimate and luxurious space within an exciting new salon that reflected everything about me and my personality – traditional and contemporary, unique but charming," she says.

After finding the perfect property, a three storey Victorian House, she designed the salon to create a balance of decadence and practicality.

Much thought was put into the colour scheme - rich burgandy, creams and duck egg blue - the lighting, which varies within each of the salons separate zones, and the main retail area; an aquarium was also set into the wall to create a focal point.

Now up and running, Cyndy is thrilled with her new salon: "When you enter the salon, the reception really dazzles, It is in the middle of the salon and it is central to all that is going on."

She adds:"I am delighted with the results and feel that I have created an unprecedented salon in Northern Ireland."

'Chic Minimalism' - Lisa Shepherd

Posted by Kate
Dated: January 28, 2008 3:07 PM

Having made up her mind that it was time for a change, Lisa Shepherd overhauled her Kidderminster-based salon in just a week.

"I wanted to bring everything bang up to date," she says. "After being open for five years I thought it was important to move forward and to re-excite clients and staff."

Lisa looked to add a contemporary feel in the style of New York-based hotel designer Ian Schrager and was determined that she would create a design that engages customers and inspires the salon’s 28 staff. "It’s important clients get excited by the salon and also that staff love working in it."

Among the many focal points making the salon stand out, is Lisa's own favourite feature: "The dining table top was the best buy of the re-design. I had it made to feature our press coverage - it gives the clients something to read while having a coffee."

With the work at the Kidderminster salon complete, she may now take her creative energy further afield. She adds: "It is a look that will follow through to our other salons as they open."

Errol Douglas has been coiffeur to the Chelsea set and various ubiquitous celebrities at his swanky Knightsbridge salon since 1998.

Now, after nine years of building a reputation as one of the UK’s leading Afro and European stylists, Errol has turned his attentions to revamping the bricks and mortar of his business.

The refurbishment to create a modern, galleria-style salon spanned two months and came with a hefty £100,000 price tag.

Errol says: "The worst part was the length of time it took as the project ran over by quite a lot. But I think we’ve achieved our goal to create a gallery-style salon that’s calming and not too fussy."

'Classic But Contemporary' - Lavant Rowe Hairdressing

Posted by Kate
Dated: January 11, 2008 9:46 AM

Lavant Rowe Hairdressing is Stephen Hartshorne and Chris Scott's first salon venture.

The duo wanted a salon that was a mixture of the classic and the contemporary with a French chic edge that firmly targeted the top end of the market.

With little structural work to do, they set about creating three clearly defined areas: a waiting/reception/retails area; a wet area and a cutting/consulting area.

They selected a classy colour scheme of Roman white paint, silver and black feature wallpaper and mottled cream and terracotta floor tiles and were helped by Rima Designed Environments who came up with the bespoke furniture and added the finishing touches.

"We think we've achieved a balance of contemporary and classic design with a French boudoir twist." explains Chris.

Umberto Giannini's salons are associated with classic elegance and when Darren Gilbert took on the franchise for the Birmingham salon two years ago, he didn't diversify from this trademark look.

"I wanted a look that was modern, simple but glamorous with opulent key features," explains Darren.

A colour scheme of cream and black, in keeping with the Umberto Giannini trademark, was selected to give the salon a minimalist feel. While Darren added his own signature features, including stunning modern crystal chanedeliers to add an accent of glamour.

The completed look conformed to his vision of creating "a classic environment with an element of relaxation and comfort for clients and staff."

Hob Have the Key to the Lock - Salon Interiors

Dated: December 17, 2007 5:41 PM

There are few areas in London – or the UK for that matter – buzzier than Camden Town, making it the ideal site for hob salon’s new salon and training academy.

The site is part of a new-build development on the side of Camden Lock, and both the nature of the building and the location were big draws for the hob directors.

Creative director Akin Konizi said: "The building was an empty shell, much like a warehouse, which offered us a blank canvas to work with, plus a great deal of space and a fantastic location directly on Camden Lock.

"We chose Camden Town because it is an ideal location for finding models to feed the academy."

Because the building was new, the hob team was able to start from scratch, installing everything new including electrics, plumbing and flooring.

With the help of design company Bridley Interiors, Akin designed the salon and academy down to the smallest detail.

Says Akin: “I wanted a clean contemporary feel, reflecting hob’s signature style as a fashion-led brand.

Everything about Keith Rosenberg and Eric O'Brien's south London salon Witches Hut screams quirky cool.

In response to the salon's popularity, the duo spent six months refurbishing and increased the number of styling stations from 12 to 26 while transforming the 18th century premises into a turiving hub of hairdressing.

Artistic features that make the salon stand out from the crowd are striking original paintings from Keith's artist sister-in-law Lydia Lynagh, and brightly coloured decorative windows incorporating black cat, pumpkin and crescent moon designs.

Other distinctive features include bespoke boxed shelving units, solid oak tables and mirrors at each styling station, and unique red, black and brown reclaimed barbers' chairs.

"Everyone in the team is hair crazy - they're a really talented, passionate and, in their own ways, quirky lot, so it's only fitting we created a salon as individual as they are," says Keith.

How To Get Your Salon Interior Right

Dated: October 18, 2007 10:01 AM

From chandeliers to sinks and tables to tiles, the furniture, fixtures and fittings that you choose for your salon speak volumes about your image and are among the first things a new client will notice.

The finalists and winner of the Design Award category in HJ’s 2007 British Hairdressing Business Awards know more than most about what makes a salon space look fabulous.

The Winner!

Bradys%20advice.jpg
Brady's Guernsey
With a stunning panoramic sea view across Guernsey’s picturesque capital St Peter Port, Brady’s has an outlook most buildings can only dream of.

And the inside is just as spectacular.

“The aim behind our design was to maximise light and the sense of space,” says owner Paul Brady. “We’ve gone for bold, sculptural forms and uninterrupted lines.”

The glass floor is Paul’s favourite element of the décor – parts of it are illuminated from beneath. But the most expensive additions were the bespoke stainless steel reception desk and bar.

Be bold, is Paul’s advice to salon owners looking for style on a limited budget. “If you can’t do the whole place, do part of it and do it well. Decide what you’re about and get that across in the design – be distinctive.”

When the shop next door to Hoop salon became available, owner Tim Thomas welcomed the opportunity to double in size. So he planned the refit with a simple agenda: it would work around clients and be completed within six weeks.

Tim and his team created a mood folder full of design ideas for the new-look business and came up with a strong design concept - cool white walls, soft lighting and wooden flooring

They also installed eight plasma screens around the salon, which show fashion, hair and lifestyle programmes, to keep the clients entertained; and hung 8ft posters of some of the images that Tim had created over the past few years, to act as talking points.

"Client comfort, along with creating a stylish, contemporary environment, was really important – and it’s exactly what we’ve achieved," said Tim.

For example, Scottish salon entrepreneur Charlie Miller employed a renowned feng shui master to advise on the creation of certain features for his Edinburgh salon at Harvey Nichols.

Master Chan Kun Wah was involved from the outset, working alongside Charlie’s wife and co-founder of the business, Janet, to create the finished design.
