Dated: April 29, 2008 3:18 PM

The Government risks endangering salon jobs in its attempt to make amends for abolishing the 10p income tax rate, the NHF has warned.
Alistair Darling, chancellor of the exchequer, has attempted to cool tempers by promising to look at using the national minimum wage (NMW), to compensate those who will suffer as a result of the abolition of the 10p starting rate, but it is small businesses, such as hair and beauty salons, that will be hard hit with a high risk of job losses across the country, claims the NHF.

Habia Join Forces with the NIC

Posted by Kate
Dated: March 7, 2008 10:51 AM

Habia have joined forces with their United States equivalent, the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC), to create the International Cosmetology Licensing Organisation (ICLO).

Based in the UK, the new organisation will lead to an increase in reciprocity and mutual recognition of hair and beauty qualifications around the world. The aim is to agree an equivalency of qualifications between the UK and the US in order to help hair and beauty professionals move between the two countries for work.

The ICLO will now seek approval from national governments worldwide for the recognition of and reciprocity between hair and beauty standards and qualifications. Representatives from other countries will be invited to become members and participate in the strategic direction of the company.

Kirby Morris, President of the ICLO and International Director of NIC, said, "On behalf of ICLO, we think this is a great idea and will improve mobility from state to state, making it easier to take up employment around the US. This also keeps the US up to date with what's happening in the rest of the world."

Executive Director of ICLO and Chief Executive Officer of Habia Alan Goldsbro added: "The new company will encourage and promote the concept of international mobility in hair and beauty training, as well as seeking to set, raise and maintain standards for the practice of hair and beauty."

"It is also a step forward to creating a genuine worldwide system of mobility, based on the level of professionalism we have in the UK and the USA."

NHF brands new legislation 'evil'

Posted by Matthew
Dated: March 6, 2008 2:04 PM

The NHF has condemned new legislation concerning the employment of foreign workers as “an evil piece of legislation” and described government guidelines on how to adhere to the new rules as “gobbledegook”.

The legislation, which came into force at the end of February, requires owners of small businesses to understand and verify up to 13 forms of identification when employing foreign workers, including recognising the passports of 27 EU member states.

Small businesses face fines of £10,000 if they employ people illegally - even if they do so accidentally.

Habia Defend the Diploma In Hair and Beauty Studies

Posted by Kate
Dated: February 17, 2008 6:49 PM

Industry standards-setting body habia have become embroiled in a debate with the Daily Mail newspaper over the new Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies, which launches this autumn.

'The hair and beauty diploma - worth 3 1/2 A levels - that doesn't actually involve cutting any hair' says that opponents to the diploma feel it is "too thin on practical skills and heavy on theory".

It adds that 'pupils taking the diploma will learn about the history of hairdressing in society, its science and how celebrity hairstyles, such as Kate Moss's, influence the industry' and raises question marks over the fact that they will not learn to cut hair.

However, habia are adamant that the diploma is not supposed to be a vocational course and point out that the NVQ already exists for students looking to follow that path.

"It should be pointed out the Diploma, across all lines of learning, is not and never has been a vocational or practical qualification designed to give young people work based competency in the manner of an NVQ," says Employer Champion for the Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies Gill Morris in a letter to the newspaper.

"Whilst it does contain practical elements and offers the opportunity for work experience, the Diploma is a broad-based educational programme which allows young people to choose and develop areas of interest from a wide range of subjects before going onto further training or learning, whether vocational or academic.

"The aim of the Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies in particular is to give young people with an interest in the subject the knowledge, theory and employability skills, such as team work and reliability, that employers would like them to have upon entering the industry so that they can be developed further by businesses and training providers themselves.

"This ‘preparation for work’ approach (as opposed to the ‘work ready’ approach of vocational qualifications such as NVQs) is what makes the Diploma stand out, as it gives young people the basic skills, knowledge and understanding from which they and future employers and educators can build on without tying them to one career path.

"Young people are not expected to have cutting skills upon entering the hairdressing sector, nor is it desired by the overwhelming majority of hairdressing businesses. On-the-job training is still the norm in the hairdressing industry, and this will continue with the Diploma. The major difference is that recruits will enter the industry much better prepared, informed and knowing what is expected of them."

Employer Champion Seeking Support For New Diploma

Posted by Kate
Dated: January 9, 2008 4:28 PM

Habia have appointed top industry trainer and business expert Gill Morris as their Employer Champion for the new Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies.

Her role is to spend the next 12 months highlighting the benefits the Diploma will bring to businesses, both large and small, as well as representing employers’ interests to government.

Gill will also be aiming to get employers involved in the consortia that will deliver the Diploma to young people across England, as well as encouraging employers to get involved in other ways, such as:

  • sharing expensive equipment, making it more affordable for businesses, schools and colleges to benefit from the latest technology

  • working with schools and colleges to help develop a curriculum, train staff, give talks and carry out demonstrations

  • providing work experience placements, which would give employers the opportunity to help young people as well as building connections with them and their schools.

Gill recently met with Schools Minister Jim Knight at the National Educational Business Partnership Network (NEBPN) conference to ensure that hair and beauty is not overlooked in further Diploma developments and in upcoming promotional activities.

Speaking after the event, Gill said: "The Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies is going to have a huge impact on our industry, so it is important that employers fully understand how it will work and what it aims to achieve from day one.

"It is only natural that businesses will have questions, but my role is to assure them that they will be involved in every step of the development, and that the end result will very much be designed to meet the needs of employers in relation to young people and skills."

ghd Launch Petition Against High-Street Retailers

Posted by Kate
Dated: November 8, 2007 11:31 AM

Retail is far more than a way to increase revenue; it is an opportunity for staff to demonstrate their expert knowledge and help clients to get the best out of their hair between appointments - which in turn improves customer retention.

Be it products, brushes or electrical equipment, one of the main attractions for clients is that they are purchasing salon-exclusive professional products that have been recommended to them by experts.

When the same merchandise is available from mainstream retailers and supermarkets for less than the recommended retail price it poses a real threat to salons' retail business.

So naturally salon owners have been disgruntled by seeing ghd straightening irons retailed for just £99 by supermarket giant Tesco.

Habia Survey Reveals Major Changes

Posted by Kate
Dated: August 6, 2007 5:06 PM

Two new surveys by Habia - Habia Skills Survey of the Barbering Industry 2007 and the Habia Skills Survey of the Hairdressing Industry 2007 - have revealed the dramatically changing face of the hair industry.

Gone are the days when the vast majority of salons were independent salons that employed a handful of staff and solely offered hairdressing services.

These days, nearly a quarter of salons are members of a chain or franchise with an average of 13 employees. There’s been a dramatic shift toward offering other services such as beauty therapy, nails services and spa too – with almost 40% of salons offering such services.

Another key shift in the industry is that more and more men are choosing it for their careers. In the late nineties, just one in 10 hair professionals were men, that figure is now at almost one in four and growing..

    Spring Clean Your Business

    Posted by Ruth
    Dated: April 30, 2007 11:23 AM

With the festive break a distant memory, many small and medium-sized businesses could increase productivity and profitability for 2007 simply by reviewing some of their practices.

National chairman of the Forum of Private Business, Len Collinson, says making time to think about the big picture is difficult, but ultimately rewarding.

"There are many daily distractions, from the necessities of the workplace to unwelcome government red tape," he says. "However, time spent looking at the longer term can be most beneficial. Owners of a smaller business should look for help when creating new appointments or reviewing problems, such as the Forum of Private Business."
