The fraught financial climate might put you off any plans to invest in new ideas or initiatives; but in difficult times, standing out from the crowd becomes imperative and a USP can make all the difference to your salon.
Make-up bar, nail bars or beauty treatments are just some of the add-on services that might help tempt new customers through the door, inject some life into a tired salon and ride through the economic downturn.

Chartered accountant, Paula Tallon, a partner of BDO Stoy Hayward LLP, gives the Budget an expert perusal and unearths some hidden gremlins In his 2009 Budget Report the Chancellor decided to address the huge fiscal deficit with a combination of short-term borrowing, tax increases and more public sector cost-cutting. He intends to provide further help for businesses - partly paid for by the tax increases - but this additional help is rather limited and disappointing.

Hairdressing has the highest level of dermatitis of any UK industry; it is estimated that around half of all hairdressers will develop dermatitis and up to 70% will suffer from some form of skin damage at some stage in their career.
But wearing gloves that meet recommendations as part of the salon's overall hand-care policy will dramatically reduce the incidence of dermatitis.

A loyalty scheme is becoming a prerequisite in today's increasingly competitive market - with practically every major high street brand offering some form of incentive scheme. As you will probably be aware, following an outcry from employers, the section of the Employment Act 2002 relating to the disciplinary/grievance procedure has been dropped and a new ACAS Code of Practice for handling disciplinary and grievance issues came into force on 1 April 2009.
This will be welcomed by salon owners as the new code is much more straightforward. However, it should not be forgotten that tribunals can increase the award to an employee by 25% where the employer has failed to adequately follow the Code of Practice.
David Wright, who advises habia and salons in the UK, answers your questions regarding the new ACAS Code.

Inviting loyal customers to your salon for a night of pampering or an informal gathering is a great way of thanking them for their business, while promoting your salon in the best possible light.
Be it a select few clients welcomed to a VIP evening, a fashion show or something a bit different, such as a make-up party or a clothes swapping event, they can make sure you stay in your clients' mindsets and ensure that they mention you to their friends.
Catherine Mcmahon, portfolio accounts manager - artistic, PR & events for L'Oréal Professionnel, regularly liaises with salons to assist them with organising client events. Here are her top tips for organising a night to remember.

A great hairstyle photo can be used for multiple purposes; from being an awards entry to appearing in trade and consumer press to being used for salon artwork.
But for an image to be the most versatile it will need to tick all the right boxes for a variety of people - from the hairdresser to journalists who will publish the work.
In a new series, we asked Lisa Shepherd, photographer Andrew O'Toole, a PR and a journalist to share their verdicts on this classic photo.

Opened by HJ's 2006 Wales and South West Hairdresser of the Year, Vicky Turner, the Cirencester salon is the first Goldsworthy Franchise.
Vicky designed the salon with the help of her mentor Steven Goldsworthy and his mother Peggy using a colour scheme of naturals, beech, concrete greys, stainless steel and black give a cool and contemporary feel.
The salon's focal point is a bespoke, curved desk of concrete laminate, stainless steel, giving a deluxe but strong impression to anyone entering the salon; while it also boasts a VIP lounge complete with glass dressing table and a baroque waiting chair.
The overall result is a simple but striking salon of which Vicky is very proud: "We wanted to create a space that was high-end taste but on a budget. It is great to realise my dream," she says.

Step into Imagine Hairdressing and you will experience a gorgeous space filled with bright stripes, chrome curves, retro wood effects and colourful lighting.
The result is a warm but elegant pop art feel that reflected owners Lee and Heidi Spencer's strong ideas for the salon. "We wanted to create a colourful, modern and open salon with bags of personality," says Lee.
They also wanted to distance themselves from the minimal style that many salons favour, as Heidi explains: "The space feels less clinical than some other salons. Introducing colour made a massive difference to the end result."
