Hairdresser Danny Oh left his native Singapore to train at Vidal Sassoon, and decided to make his life here.
His eponymously titled salon opened in London's capital of urban cool, Islington's Camden Passage. A commercial area defined by high-end boutique shopping, and a celebrated antiques market, Danny has blended in with the locals with his flair for funky décor and display of quirky collectables, striking a chord with young urban professionals who appreciate quality, style and a good haircut.
Formerly an interior design showroom, the refit was achieved in less than six weeks and the result is an original and witty take on eclectic urban chic. Danny chose to work with Reedesign, a highly respected local firm of architects.

Renting a chair in a salon, or even renting a room, is commonplace within the hair industry.
A survey in 2004 suggested there were more than 100,000 self-employed hairdressers in the UK. Some hair salons rent a single chair, often to extend the range of services they are able to provide, whereas some salons have 100% of the premises occupied on a self-employed basis.
Like all forms of employment there are positives and negatives to renting a chair; David Wright, who advises Habia and a range of salons on their legal business, answers some of the key questions.

Husband and wife team Lara Johnson and Dom Capel wanted to challenge the simplistic style and clean lines that many modern salons have adopted. Their vision was to create a salon with an eclectic mix of French boutique and lavish gentleman's club.
With their new salon located just down the road from their original salon in Swansea, and double its size, the couple wanted a new look. "We wanted to create an ambience unmatched in Wales and give it the same feel as our home," says Lara.
Their team completely transformed the three-storey building - formerly a simple retail and residential space. "The building was completely gutted from the front elevation backwards," adds Lara. This created a blank canvas for their design, which they devised with the help of designer Marc Smith.
At a cost of £200,000 the project, self-financed by Lara and Dom, represented a big risk. However, having spent 18 months in the planning stage, and having a clear idea of what they wanted to achieve the duo managed to avoid any unexpected problems.
The finished product reflects the vast amount of time and attention to detail that has been dedicated to the salon and certainly achieves their objective of a salon full of luxury and unlike any other in Wales.

The UK is getting older... in fact the average age is now 39 and it is rising all the time. But while we're a nation getting older in body; we're getting younger in spirit.
And in a culture that has become obsessed with the concept of looking 10 years younger; today's women - and men - want their appearance to reflect that they feel longer without the dramatic mid-life crisis measures of yesteryear.
No aspect of the appearance can have as bigger impact on the way they look than hair; so it's little surprise that a recent survey by Mintel found that women aged between 45 and 54 were the biggest spenders in the hair salon.
However, unlike their average client, almost half of all hairdressers are under the age of 24 so can they really understand the needs of the 'best age' woman , who if treated with care will be a loyal and profitable customer?
Beverly C, Goldwell Ambassador for their new Triflective Naturals range, which promises grey coverage while offering multi-depth tonal colours, gives her top tips for helping you to offer your middle aged ladies the best possible service.

The Charlotte Murray salon in Muswell Hill is a beacon for Bohemian design and beautiful hair. The premises, a former interior furnishing shop, has been richly transformed into a decadent space perfectly in tune with the tastes of the sophisticated north Londoner.
The thriving metropolitan 'village' location is a mecca for niche boutiques, and Charlotte has shaped her salon's identity accordingly. "Muswell Hill is a thriving commercial area, with bars, restaurants and high-end shops. Being on the Broadway was too good a prospect to pass up," she says.
After 15 years working as a session stylist, Charlotte decided to set up her own salon to share her wealth of hair knowledge and simultaneously provide a more solid future for herself and her family. Four months ago, her dream became a reality.
"Creating an artistic, individual, and beautiful place in which to work and develop - a space that draws like-minded people in - has been amazing. There's lots more I want to do, and this will give me the perfect platform to work from," she explains.

Barbara Daley is a familiar name in the hairdressing industry. An experienced businesswoman who opened her first salon in Liverpool in 1990 followed by a second one six months later, she has a host of celebrity clients to her name.
But when she decided to relocate to an 1850s Grade 2 listed building earlier this year, her patience and perseverance were put to the test.
Initially attracted by six-metre high ceilings and elegant stone Doric columns, the hairdresser's designs on creating an exquisite but modern salon were soon dampened as the reality of the huge project ahead became apparent.
Red tape and planning issues meant took two years before work could even begin, but once the initial problems were overcome, Barbara liaised closely with architects Austin Smith Lord to create a space that not only looked good and architecturally brilliant, but worked as a salon.
"We had to make the salon inviting, not imposing, and yet keep the grandness of its features," Barbara explains. "We stressed that despite the grandeur of the salon, it wasn't to be designed to be elitist. It had to be warm and welcoming to all our clients."
The salon was opened by celebrity client Coleen McCloughlin in March 2008 and the hair work certainly seems to have paid off.
