Posted by Kate
Dated: November 2, 2007 12:57 PM

Graeme and Jackie Hamilton experienced more teething problems than most when trying to get their Couper & Co salon up and running.

Hindered by the discovery of a safe room with 18 inch thick walls and being refused permission to have a skip to remove their rubbish, they set about a complete revamp to create an open-plan look.

After months of hard graft and sticking to their "while first place exists we shall never accept second" mantra they unveiled their dream salon.

Stand out features at Couper & Co include blue neon lighting, as sported by security services, signature wall graffiti and a steel glass stairwell.

The name Ruby Skies might sound like the latest Hollywood blockbuster or singing sensation, but it is in fact Glasgow’s newest hair and beauty salon.

Owner Angela Buchanan set up her first beauty salon five years ago and wanted to branch out into hairdressing to offer her clients a one-stop shop.

When a salon that she had been using for 20 years became available, she jumped at the chance to buy it.

After a three month refurbishment, the finished result is a sophisticated, clean, minimalist salon that oozes comfort.

Retail is far more than a way to increase revenue; it is an opportunity for staff to demonstrate their expert knowledge and help clients to get the best out of their hair between appointments - which in turn improves customer retention.

Be it products, brushes or electrical equipment, one of the main attractions for clients is that they are purchasing salon-exclusive professional products that have been recommended to them by experts.

When the same merchandise is available from mainstream retailers and supermarkets for less than the recommended retail price it poses a real threat to salons' retail business.

So naturally salon owners have been disgruntled by seeing ghd straightening irons retailed for just £99 by supermarket giant Tesco.

We're always hearing the word branding and about the importance of building a brand, but what actually is a brand and how important is it to a salon? A solid salon business is just about great hairdressing isn’t it? Or is it?

BJ Cunningham is the man who launched Death cigarettes and turned it into a brand that remarkably, people wanted to buy. He has since established a hugely successful brand marketing agency and is a renowned expert in branding.

According to BJ, most people think of a brand as an external image and a façade for business. For example, in hairdressing, most salon owners think their brand is about their logo and image representing the kind of hairdressing they deliver.

However, to really understand what a brand is, BJ says you need to think of it as a promise, not a logo or a name.
