Sweet Serenity - Interiors

Posted by Kate
Dated: October 1, 2007 11:02 AM

Patrick Ludde had always wanted to open his own salon, but that dream didn't become a reality until three years ago when he teamed up with business partner Neil Ward.

They chose a site that had been stripped back to an empty shell in London's plush Maddox Street, and called in Welonda's in-house design team, Blu Orbit, and Simon Brown, a well-known feng shui expert.

The outcome was a stylish, boutique salon, which mixes clean contemporary lines with dashes of old-school glamour and opulence.

Seaside Special - Hoop Salon Interior

Dated: October 10, 2007 3:59 PM

When the shop next door to Hoop salon became available, owner Tim Thomas welcomed the opportunity to double in size. So he planned the refit with a simple agenda: it would work around clients and be completed within six weeks.

Tim and his team created a mood folder full of design ideas for the new-look business and came up with a strong design concept - cool white walls, soft lighting and wooden flooring

They also installed eight plasma screens around the salon, which show fashion, hair and lifestyle programmes, to keep the clients entertained; and hung 8ft posters of some of the images that Tim had created over the past few years, to act as talking points.

"Client comfort, along with creating a stylish, contemporary environment, was really important – and it’s exactly what we’ve achieved," said Tim.

Generating Publicity Through Competitions

Competitions can be a great form of below-the-line advertising. But if they are not run properly, or in accordance with the law, then they can badly backfire causing reputational damage and regulatory action as well as financial loss.

Nigel Miller, a Commerce and Technology partner at City law firm Fox Williams LLP explains the main things you should think about when running a competition.

The first issue to consider is whether your competition is legal.

With the exception of the National Lottery and certain other exceptions for non-commercial purposes lotteries are illegal. On the other hand, genuine prize competitions and free draws are lawful.

The Gambling Act 2005 seeks to clarify the distinction and the newly formed Gambling Commission will monitor the boundary between lotteries and competitions and take action where a scheme is promoted which, in its view, amounts to an unlicensed and, therefore, illegal lottery.

The Secret Of Successful Networking

How often have you attended an event packed with potentially invaluable contacts and ended up talking to people you already know? It's a common mistake.

According to Judith Gilmore of Effective Communications, a consultancy that helps people professionally present themselves and their ideas, many of us are limiting our potential.

"How many of us were raised with the advice, 'don't talk to strangers?' It's good advice to give to children but useless for the working world," says Judith. "We need to talk to strangers.

"Too many of us still wait for somebody to introduce us. Throw out this conditioning and put in its place the ethos it's up to me to take a risk."

It sounds simple, but in practice, many people find the idea of talking to strangers terrifying.

"Many of us have a phobia about starting a conversation with someone we don't know," says Judith. "In your work you are at a disadvantage if you find small talk uncomfortable. How will you make that unexpected business connection or gather that vital piece of information?"

How To Get Your Salon Interior Right

Dated: October 18, 2007 10:01 AM

From chandeliers to sinks and tables to tiles, the furniture, fixtures and fittings that you choose for your salon speak volumes about your image and are among the first things a new client will notice.

The finalists and winner of the Design Award category in HJ’s 2007 British Hairdressing Business Awards know more than most about what makes a salon space look fabulous.

The Winner!

Bradys%20advice.jpg
Brady's Guernsey
With a stunning panoramic sea view across Guernsey’s picturesque capital St Peter Port, Brady’s has an outlook most buildings can only dream of.

And the inside is just as spectacular.

“The aim behind our design was to maximise light and the sense of space,” says owner Paul Brady. “We’ve gone for bold, sculptural forms and uninterrupted lines.”

The glass floor is Paul’s favourite element of the décor – parts of it are illuminated from beneath. But the most expensive additions were the bespoke stainless steel reception desk and bar.

Be bold, is Paul’s advice to salon owners looking for style on a limited budget. “If you can’t do the whole place, do part of it and do it well. Decide what you’re about and get that across in the design – be distinctive.”

Dated: October 24, 2007 10:26 AM

Everything about Keith Rosenberg and Eric O'Brien's south London salon Witches Hut screams quirky cool.

In response to the salon's popularity, the duo spent six months refurbishing and increased the number of styling stations from 12 to 26 while transforming the 18th century premises into a turiving hub of hairdressing.

Artistic features that make the salon stand out from the crowd are striking original paintings from Keith's artist sister-in-law Lydia Lynagh, and brightly coloured decorative windows incorporating black cat, pumpkin and crescent moon designs.

Other distinctive features include bespoke boxed shelving units, solid oak tables and mirrors at each styling station, and unique red, black and brown reclaimed barbers' chairs.

"Everyone in the team is hair crazy - they're a really talented, passionate and, in their own ways, quirky lot, so it's only fitting we created a salon as individual as they are," says Keith.

Taking that step to expanding your business is a big decision. Franchising is one option that is ideal for hairdressing.

The Franchise Group, which helps businesses franchise and individuals set up on their own say that franchising is a great way for business owners to expand their company’s brand across the UK without having to worry about managing all the salons or units single-handedly.

However, like any business decision, choosing to take on a franchise or become a franchisor is not something you should do without some serious consideration.

A host of successful hairdressers give their advice on the key points all franchisors and franchisees should consider before making a commitment.

Hairdressing is a fantastic career for creative expression, growth and opportunity but the long hours, time spent standing bent over clients and eating-on-the-go can be tough on health.
