Scissor Sisters in Maidstone, Kent, is the ultimate example of a family business.
Owned by parents Bob and Sandra Kitchin and run by their daughters Laura and Hannah, the salon also has a photographic studio where the girls will offer client makeover portrait pictures, in partnership with Bob, a professional photographer.
Having taken over a part-time salon in April 2007, the girls completely gutted and re-built it in a modern, relaxed decor before re-opening the doors the following month.
"It was important that the salon had a modern stylish look, while providing comfort. Many of our clients have complimented the staff on this," explains Hannah.

Andrew Harris and Mark Hanford spent 14 years managing a salon together before they took the plunge and bought their own hairdressing business, Boosh in Swansea.
Before the salon opened, the building - a former picture gallery - needed to be completely gutted, including building new ceilings, walls, windows and floors.
They then set about achieving their goal: a communal environment where people felt comfortable and relaxed. "We believe we've got it exactly right," says Andrew.

| Last year, the Health & Safety Executive, in partnership with Local Authorities, delivered the 'Bad Hand Day?’ campaign to prevent dermatitis among hairdressers. A combination of inspection, enforcement and marketing communications ensured that the campaign was highly successful at encouraging salons to take preventative action, such as wearing the right gloves. Now it's time for phase two of the campaign, which sees glove manufacturers Marigold and BM Polyco Ltd working closely with HBSA to offer a discount voucher scheme. The scheme will offer a discount to salons who adopt the appropriate gloves from the two participating companies and you'll be hearing plenty more about it in the coming weeks. | ![]() |

Whether it’s the colours chosen for the walls, the arrangement of the salon or thoughtfully placed water features, a more enlightened approach to business is no longer seen as weird – indeed some of the most successful salons in the country have looked to their spiritual side for inspiration.
For example, Scottish salon entrepreneur Charlie Miller employed a renowned feng shui master to advise on the creation of certain features for his Edinburgh salon at Harvey Nichols.
Master Chan Kun Wah was involved from the outset, working alongside Charlie’s wife and co-founder of the business, Janet, to create the finished design.

Former British Hairdressing Awards Newcomer of the Year Sam Burnett became the first person to partner Rush when he opened the new Rush Salon in Walton-upon-Thames.
The salon, a fine example of industrial chic, was a collaboration between Rush deigners, Think Bespoke and Transform Shopfitters designed to create an 'art gallery for hair'.
"We wanted Rush Walton to look modern with an art gallery feel, but we also believe that client comfort is the most important factor," explains Sam.

Some parts of your business are best left to the experts – and looking after your accounts is one of them.
Your accountant is probably the most important business partner you’ll have – and if you find a good one, the relationship could last as long as you’re in business.
A qualified accountant can help before you even start trading, deciding for example, whether it’s best to set up as a sole trader, a partnership or a limited company and the tax implications of this.
An accountant will also know which records you have to keep and when your accounts need to be filed with the relevant authorities at the right time.
A good accountant should also be able to offer you more practical business advice such as setting financial targets, cost cutting, improving your profitability as well as helping you decide when, and if, to expand.
They should be in tune with your business ambitions and help you to manage growth successfully and minimise your business tax burden.
