Two new surveys by Habia - Habia Skills Survey of the Barbering Industry 2007 and the Habia Skills Survey of the Hairdressing Industry 2007 - have revealed the dramatically changing face of the hair industry.
Gone are the days when the vast majority of salons were independent salons that employed a handful of staff and solely offered hairdressing services.
These days, nearly a quarter of salons are members of a chain or franchise with an average of 13 employees. There’s been a dramatic shift toward offering other services such as beauty therapy, nails services and spa too – with almost 40% of salons offering such services.
Another key shift in the industry is that more and more men are choosing it for their careers. In the late nineties, just one in 10 hair professionals were men, that figure is now at almost one in four and growing..

When Leslie and Gary Hunter took over their mother Frances's salon, Frances Hunter Hair and Beauty in Sterling, they decided the time was right to move to larger premises.
After choosing the site - a Victorian mews that had previously been home to an undertakers - it took six months of hard graft and a hefty £165,000 price tag to turn the building into the modern but friendly salon they had visualised.
"The most important objective was maintaining the character of our family-run business while moving it into the next generation," says Gary.

This year has seen one very unflattering portrayal of hairdressing on television (don’t mention the Wars), but for years top names in the industry have been acting as ambassadors for hairdressing in the UK, raising the industry’s profile and ensuring bright young people see it as a creative career prospect and not a fall-back.
As Hair Wars illustrated, not all publicity is good publicity and any hairdresser accepting an invitation to appear on TV needs to go into the project with their eyes open.
That's a message that is firmly endorsed by top industry professionals Errol Douglas, Andrew Barton and Beverly C, who agree that television appearances can be a major opportunity; but also represent a huge risk.

After 20 years in the business, Darrell and Mark Blake were running out of space in their salon, so they couldn't believe their luck when the shop next door came up for sale.
As the building was Grade II listed, they spent eight months in discussions and negociations with English Heritage over planning and permissions.
But one year and a lot of hard work after buying the building, they opened their doors to the new Blushes salon: a modern, minimalist yet contemporary salon able to cater for the 150 clients that come through its doors each day.
