Nearly three-quarters of hairdressers have suffered from dermatitis at some point in their career, and with hairdressers 17 times more likely to develop the skin condition than any other group, it's a problem for both sufferers and salon owners.
Dermatitis is painful and not just for those with the condition - your business could feel the pain too. Staff with dermatitis will have to take time off work and, in the most severe cases, leave the industry. Prevention is better than cure and, as a salon owner, you owe it to your staff and business to ensure they're protected.

It may be a creative profession, but it's not often that hair stylists invent a new business model that gets others in the industry talking - and, no doubt, wishing they'd thought of it first. But that's what well-known London hairstylist Daniel Hersheson and son and business partner Luke have successfully managed to do with their new blow-dry bar in Topshop on London's Oxford Street.

If you're planning ahead to devise your company policy for the forthcoming Health Bill on banning smoking in the workplace, it might be worth canvassing opinion from your team before you set your rules in stone.
The ban comes into effect on the 1 July, but with smoking an issue that divides opinion, it's worth beginning work on your policy immediately.
Legislation will make it illegal to light up in workplaces and public places and employers who fail to comply could face fines of up to £2,500. Welsh salon owners have even less time to plan as the ban will be introduced in Wales on 2 April.
According to law firm DWF, companies need to implement a policy that is not only in line with the law but that has the support of employees. "While there is no automatic right to a smoke break, some people will still want to smoke during working hours. Employers must balance their wishes with those of the non-smokers who often believe that smokers enjoy more rest breaks," says associate Stephen Robinson.
He advises that the policy should state:

Coming from a family of hairdressers it only seemed natural that a young Taylor Ferguson would carry on the family business.

HJ's salon doctor helps a men's salon to pull its business model into shape
Steve Beever set up City Gent in 1991 and now has five salons with a turnover of £1million. He felt there was a fantastic opportunity to do something different in the industry and wanted to expand - his ambition was to open nine new company salons by 2009.
But to achieve this, energy and skills had to be channelled in the right direction. He needed help in identifying this direction, realising that his salon's business model needed to be tweaked and developed.

HJ talks to motivational speakers from outside the industry. Author and climber Joe Simpson's presentation, Touching the Void, is based on his experiences in the Andes which have inspired a book and film of the same name.
His presentation is one of the most popular on the seminar and conference circuit. It tells the story of an ill-fated attempt by Joe and friend Simon Yates to climb the previously unconquered west face of the Siula Grande in Peru in 1985.

With the festive break a distant memory, many small and medium-sized businesses could increase productivity and profitability for 2007 simply by reviewing some of their practices.
National chairman of the Forum of Private Business, Len Collinson, says making time to think about the big picture is difficult, but ultimately rewarding.
"There are many daily distractions, from the necessities of the workplace to unwelcome government red tape," he says. "However, time spent looking at the longer term can be most beneficial. Owners of a smaller business should look for help when creating new appointments or reviewing problems, such as the Forum of Private Business."

Trade is now booming at Paul Stafford's Belfast salon, but just four years ago it nearly went bust - teaching owners Paul and Leisa some crucial business lessons.

Shop floor square-footage is more expensive than ever, so it's absolutely essential your salon makes the most of every inch. One solution that's popular among salon owners is hiring out spare chairs to independent stylists.
Not only can it provide extra revenue for the salon through regular rental payments, but having a stand-alone enterprise running from your premises can also make a positive impact on retail sales.
For the stylist, setting up a separate business within a salon can be an excellent way to learn about the commercial side of hairdressing, along with the creative side.

The sale of his phenomenally successful product business four years ago netted him a cool £37 million, and his longstanding slot on ITV's This Morning has made him a household name, but 20 years in the business and Charles Worthington shows no signs of slowing down.
He laughs at the suggestion he could quit now and happily live off the proceeds in the lap of luxury. "When I get bored I'll know it's time to hang up my scissors and go and live in St Tropez. But, I'm having such a fabulous time I can't imagine that happening. Giving up the business would leave a huge void," he says.

It pays to be seen as a caring employer, and having a clear policy on granting compassionate leave for personal and family-related reasons is one way of demonstrating compassion for staff.
There are multiple benefits of being seen as a family-friendly boss, according to government-funded advice agency Business Link, including:
Any salon owner or manager should have a policy in place for granting time off for situations such as doctor's appointments, moving house or the death of someone close, says Business Link.

At David Rozman's new salon in Queen Street, Manchester, client experience is everything - from the hand massages offered on arrival to the VIP room for those in need of an extra degree of pampering and privacy. But the salon's luxurious atmosphere and quality of service is underpinned by one important concept - David's unswerving commitment to working in harmony with the environment.
The salon is partnered with Aveda, a fitting choice given its philosophy to care for the earth in creating products whose potency relies largely on natural ingredients. It's a stance that David has embraced and extended, running the salon on renewable electricity, minimising water output and recycling daily.

Businesses of all sizes have become used to increasing insurance costs. For some, insurance has become so expensive that they have been driven out of business.
There have been reports that firms, exasperated by rising costs, have been operating without either public liability insurance (optional) or employer's liability insurance (compulsory).
The government has acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and has taken some steps to address business concerns.
It has encouraged insurers to take clients' health and safety records into account when assessing the cost of cover. And, with effect from April 2005, small companies that have no employees apart from the owner/director do not have to carry employer's liability insurance.

Thirty-one salons, two expanding training academies and plans to expand the business by two salons a year. That's not bad going for a Staffordshire-based family-run company that started trading from a Morris Minor!
"My father started off as a mobile hairdresser," explains Ben Dellicompagni, now managing director of Francesco Group, which today has an annual turnover of £9m, has 550 staff and sees some 700 learners through its two academies every year.
