Mark hayes - 2012 british hairdresser of the year nominee mark-hayes-bha-nominee.jpgMark Hayes is international creative director for Sassoon and a nominee for HJ's 2012 British Hairdresser of the Year.

We caught up with Mark to find out more about his signature style and how he reinvents his trademarks for each new collection - including his colourful 2012 entry.

What is your signature look?

"My signature aesthetic would best be described as a series of pared down looks that reflect my love of style, fashion, theatre, music, photography, art and architecture. When creating a look, I find that the juxtaposition of different style elements creates interesting hybrids: a 1920s bow fringe with a 1980s buzz cut for instance or a reductive line with an extraordinary colour.

"I have always been drawn to looks that possess an androgynous quality. I find a small, neat head shape on a girl exciting as it reveals and conceals - always an alluring concept - accentuates and delineates the structure of the face to open up so many different possibilities."

What are the inspirations behind your signature looks?

"My first recollection of really being stopped in my tracks was when I was 12 years old and attended a David Bowie concert in 1973. This set me on a journey of creative discovery. I am also very much a collector; I store images, sounds and emotions that will always end up featuring in a Sassoon collection at some point.

"But my ultimate inspiration has to be Vidal, his courageous determination and creative vision continues to inspire me daily. It is vitally important to possess a signature style. Of course Sassoon has such a rich heritage and a strong philosophy that makes our work instantly identifiable."
