Red carpet hairstyles: golden globes 2011

Red carpet hairstyles: golden globes 2011 The Hollywood elite were out in force at the 68th Golden Globe Awards last night, with big names including Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johansson and Megan Fox strutting up the big carpet.

The Social Network - also known as the Facebook film - won big at the awards, taking home four awards, including Best Film. Colin Firth and Natalie Portman took Best Actor and Actress, providing a glimpse of what might be ahead at the Oscars next month.

But the really important question is, of course, who wore what, and who did what with their hair!

Both Catherine Zeta Jones and Anne Hathway kept things simple, with classic Rita Hayworth-inspired waves.

Catherine stayed true to her green, green Welsh roots in a textured Monique Lhuillier gown, which complemented her espresso-hued wavy locks perfectly.

Anne kept a little more texture through the lengths of her hair, which was also broken up with a few face-framing highlights. Dressed in an oyster-hued Armani Prive sequinned gown, the nominated actress proved why she is rapidly becoming a red carpet best-dressed regular.

Heidi Klum may have let fashion critics down with her multi-coloured Marc Jacobs gown, but I love her tousled, natural hairstyle. It can be hard to carry off textured, 'bedhead' looks on the red carpet, but this works for me. The only thing I'd change would be a bit more volume around the crown, rather than the slightly flat centre-part.

Christina Aguilera stuck with the burlesque feel of her latest film with a black and nude lace cocktail dress, and classic large barrel waves. Christina always works the retro work so well - with that peroxide blonde, you'd expect nothing less.

Best actress - and mum-to-be - Natalie Portman did maternity red carpet-dressing with ease, in an elegant Viktor and Rolf column dress. A high beehive, complete with neat chignon at the back, finished the refined look perfectly.

Scarlett Johansson often incorporates hair accessories in to her red carpet looks, and I like the understated silver slide on the side of her textured style. I'm not a huge fan of the unstructured volume all over - and that bit sticking out at the back is driving me mad!

Glee star Lea Michelle complemented her frilly pink gown with a tousled, curly updo, with plenty of loose tendrils framing her face. I like the softness in this style, but think it's just a little too undone - perhaps a few of those tendrils should have been tucked back!

Newly single Eva Longoria looked jaw-dropping in a floor-length Zac Posen gown - this style really suits her curvaceous frame, and matched with a softly textured mini beehive, adds up to a stunning red carpet look.

Proving that short hair can look stunning on the red carpet, both Michelle Williams and Halle Berry looked cute with their crops at the Golden Globes 2011.

Michelle has recently taken her already-short crop a little shorter, with a real Rosemary's Baby feel to her blonde style. I love Halle with a pixie cut, and this textured style is no different. Thumbs up to them both - although Michelle's Valentino gown wins in the outfit stakes.

Claire Danes and Jennifer Lopez both looked great too - Jennifer proving that a slicked-back high ponytail can work wonders with a frou-frou cocktail gown, and Claire proving how good short cuts can look when dressed in to a mini updo.

Proving that the Golden Globes 2011 wasn't all about the young talent, both Helen Mirren and award-winner Jane Lynch looked stunning on the red carpet.

Both actresses inject texture in to their styles, for looks that soften the features. The two stars both look sensational - and prove, again, that short styles can easily be dressed up for a red carpet event.

Two of Mad Men's lead ing ladies opted for va-va-voom red carpet red, with January Jones opting for a plunging Versace look and Christina Hendricks in a figure-hugging frilly number.

January easily wins this one for me - her polished waves are worthy of Betty Draper herself, and bring a bit of old-school glamour to this sexy style.

Christina really doesn't look at her best here - the detailing on the dress combined with big, textured hair is just too much - I would have preferred a retro, Joan Holloway-inspired updo!

Sandra Bullock chose the Golden Globes 2011 to unveil a dramatic new hairstyle - I love this blunt fringe on her, particularly paired with her super-straight lengths. Blunt bangs can be tricky to carry off, but Sandra looks sensational. Such a fashion-forward look works really well with a dainty dress - love it!

Tron star Olivia Wilde has wowed me in the past, but this look doesn't quite do it for me. I love the sequinned Marchesa ballgown, and while I agree that such a statement look deserves simple hair, this style is just a bit too boring - see Sandra for her how to really pull of the blunt fringe!

Nicole Kidman and Leighton Meester both let me down with very natural, very boring looks. Nicole's hair has lost some of the statement red that so impressed us last year, and while Leighton always looks pretty with the natural look, these waves feel surprisingly lacklustre - and I really think a fringe of some sort would help!

Angelina Jolie made a triumphant return to the red carpet in a truly dazzling emerald Atelier Versace gown. Hair was left simple, but with a lustrous mane of waves like that - why fuss?!

Angie lookalike Megan Fox also looked better than I've seen in a while, with tumbling waves and a simple pink dress. Sometimes she goes slightly overboard with the vampish look, but perhaps married life has tamed her - this look is perfect on her.

Finally, proving that there's always room for Brit eccentricity on the red carpet, both Tilda Swinton and Helena Bonham Carter did things their own way.

I was delighted to see Tilda in Jil Sander - it was such a perfect collection, but only the truly fashion-forward could carry it off. Her hair is styled in a slightly Flock of Seagulls style, but as ever, she pulls it off.

Helena takes the prize for most eccentric of the evening, in un-matching shoes and slightly dreadlocked hair. It's hard to believe this is the same woman that played the Queen Mother in The King's Speech - but that's why we love her!
