We love colour chameleon rachel mcadams HJI Hearts logo.bmphjiheartsrachel.jpgEver since she first appeared on our screens as the fantastically evil Regina George in Mean Girls, Rachel McAdams has been a red carpet hair hero.

The stylish starlet has featured in some of our favourite films - The Notebook, Mean Girls, Wedding Crashers - and with each one, seems to have revealed a new hair colour. Unlike some colour chameleon celebs, Rachel carries off every shade with style. How does she do it?!

Starting at the beginning (it's a very good place to start), here's one of Rachel's first red carpet appearances. The braided and floral look dates back to 2005, but depressingly still looks great. OK, so the bright pink makeup has dated a little, but that plaited style wouldn't look out of place on any stylish beach today. The brunette bob dates back even further, and marks one of Rachel's first experimentations with colour. Unlike so many celebs who go brunette, this really works - and I love the soft, choppy bob too.

More recently, Rachel has gone back to her natural blonde - but has continued to experiment with shades and styling. I love the glamorous retro curls in honey blonde, but the relaxed, lighter waves are super cute too.

rachel-mcadams-2.jpgRachel often changes her colour for film roles, but arries off the looks offscreen too. Back in The Notebook days, the actress debuted a soft auburn shade. Not the easiest shade to pull off, but it works. A darker, russet hue worked well too, as seen on this recent snap - bottom left.

In 2007 drama Married Life, Rachel revealed a peroxide blonde shade. The 1940s-set film noir gave the actress a perfect opportunity to experiment with retro styles - a look that suits her style down to the ground. Finally, Rachel's famous pink streaks. The colour divided opinion, but the actress, in her 20s at the time, loved the look, which she explained she just did, 'because she felt like it!'

Yvonne Donavan of Addiction, Watford says, "I'm not a fan of the pink funky look here - bright fashion colours placed correctly in the hair can look fab and are fun, but too much can dilute or cheapen a look.

I also prefer her blonde. Blonde works much better for this type of retro glamour, I think it's much softer and younger against her skin, compared to the dark hair which can be ageing"
