The klinik london: interiors inspiration

The Klinik London takes its inspiration from - you've guessed it - clinical designs, with a (nearly) all-white interior designed by ZS Architects and salon owner Anna Forsling. Located in bustling Exmouth Market in East London, it was the salon's long, almost tubular shape that attracted Anna to the the premises - and the small garden at the back. Six months of hard work - including the erection of an extension to connect the front room to the storage area at the back - saw the former flower shop transformed into the sleek space as it now stands. Dubbed as 'clinical high-end luxury', the salon is finished in white throughout - except for a sky-blue ceiling. A black exterior enhances the striking colour scheme, which is further explored through high-gloss panel walls and subway-style tiles. Anna added plenty of thoughtful details to soften what could otherwise be a stark colour scheme - the backwash features a giant skylight and a CCTV system allows clients to see a different angle of their head during their appointment thanks to small monitors at each station. The Klinik London isn't just a beautifully different hairdressing salon; it's also been recognised by the architecture industry as a spectacular example of contemporary design - Arch Daily and ArchiScene are just two of the titles that have covered the space. Here, Anna provides her top tips for salon owners thinking of embarking on an architecturally-stimulating salon space:
  • Do your homework and budgeting. If you have had a salon previously, walk through and write down what works and what doesn’t. For example think of the size of your backwash area so that the shelving will fit backwash-size bottles etc.
  • Try to get the lighting right to be able to create an atmosphere and not to feel too harsh or too flat.
  • Use materials that are easy to keep clean and will not be stained permanently by colour!
  • Get enough electrical sockets in the right places.
  • Be original and go with what you want to be known as!
