An hour with the queen of hairdressing - legends lounge For decades Beverly C has been at the forefront of the hairdressing industry. The audience at her Legends Lounge interview at Salon International were treated to secrets and insights into how she made it to and stayed at the top. It’s been a busy few weeks for Beverly C who has been working on Trend Zoom for Goldwell and on imagery for Babyliss Pro. Somewhere in between she’s found time to mentor the FAME team on their photographic shoots and see clients, but it’s that all-rounded nature of the work that keeps her buzzing and excited. While the glitz and glamour of live shows and photoshoots may sound the most exciting element of her work, she revealed that she is actually the most passionate about training and education and loves nothing more than going into salons to discuss their issues and identify solutions to help them learn and grow. As the first woman to win British Hairdresser of the Year (and the only one to win it twice), she admits she’s in a very small minority in an industry that is dominated by women, but she is convinced that this is not about any sexism issues within hairdressing. She believes it’s far more down to the dynamic shift where it becomes hard to be available for the 24/7 nature of the industry when you have children. She told the audience ‘somethings got to give. I never had any hobbies. I didn’t have time for them.’ For women who are focused on making it to the top, she believes that the best way to really make it to the top is to have a business partner to work alongside. As a mother herself, Beverly spoke with passion and excitement as she talked about her daughter Jordanna Cobella, the Creative Director at Cobella and a member of the current FAME Team and revealed what an honour it was for them to work on their first live show together. Finishing with some advice for people who want to make it to the top of the industry she said: “Set yourself small goals. Don’t think too big because it will seem too far away. When you achieve the first goal move onto the next one.”
