Marcus king to host hj men stage at salon international HJ’s reigning Men’s Hairdresser of the Year, Marcus King, will be hosting the HJ Men Stage at Salon International 2016, helping make the stage’s Salon International debut one to remember. Marcus, part of the award-winning Hooker & Young team, will host the HJ Men stage on Sunday 16 and Monday 17 October, introducing talented teams from the world of men’s hairdressing and barbering, with HJ Men Editor, Matthew Batham hosting on the Saturday. HJ Men editor, Matthew Batham, caught up with Marcus in the run up to Salon International to get his take on men’s trends. MB: Are men more interested in looking good now? MK: Men have always been interested in the way they look, sometimes they just need probing a bit. Men are taking much more notice of fashion – they don’t consider it girlie. Younger guys want to look good all the time, and this is influencing their dads. People are staying younger for longer and a good on-trend haircut is seen as part of that. MB: What trends are you seeing in the salon for men’s hair? MK: We are definitely seeing more length being left on top, less skin fades. It’s about looks that are more unkempt – and ironically these are the ones that need the most aftercare. We are also doing a lot more colour for our male clients, especially using balayage techniques, although we don’t call it balayage with male clients. MB: Where are your male clients getting inspiration for the hair looks from? MK: They are getting inspiration from fashion magazines, social media and from their peers. MB: Who do you admire in men’s hairdressing? MK: I have to say Jamie Stevens, he pushed the boundaries and proved you could be a women’s hairdresser as well as a men’s hairdresser. booknowfoot
