The errol douglas interview - legends lounge Fellowship Ambassador and 21-times British Hairdresser of the Year nominee Errol Douglas shared the tales of his career and showcased some of his stunning collections in his Legends Lounge interview at Salon International. Errol gave the audience some fascinating insights into how he goes about creating his collections. Starting with the moodboard - he likes to create a separate one for each photo in the collection – then building the right team to bring it to life. It’s all a question of timing and his collections often take up to nine months to take from concepts to reality and he explained that one of the most important things is to work with future trends so the photos still look current when they are released to magazines. The relationship between a hairdresser and a photographer is an important one and Errol revealed that he shipped regal costumes to Australia because he was so keen to work with Andrew O’Toole on his much-acclaimed Royal Collection. He also spoke at length about working with famed fashion photographer Rankin, but advised the audience that no matter who your photographer is, you need to be involved in the creative process; choose the images that work for you and make it about the hair not the retouching. An area of his career that Errol is most passionate about is bringing through the next generation of industry talents. He spoke with fondness and pride about his role in mentoring hairdressers including Jamie Stevens, Junior Green and Ashleigh Hodges to success. The next up-and-coming industry star he’s working with is his daughter Yolanda Douglas. However, as colour is her passion he has found her an alternative mentor in super colourist Christel Lundqvist. Next up for Errol is two new television programmes that will see him making over wannabe models and members of the public. It’s a chapter that he’s delighted to be involved in, but he warned the audience that if that is their goal, there is a lot of hard work ahead as the opportunities are few and far between.
