Salon International Competitions


Following the massive success of HJ’s live competitions at Salon International in 2015, we will be launching six competitions for you to showcase your skills. Barber of the Year, sponsored by Andis, Rising Star, Bridal Hairdresser of the Year and Extensions Specialist of the Year, sponsored by Remi Cachet will again take place over the weekend of 15-17 October.

 

AFRO STYLIST OF THE YEAR – Sponsored by Avlon

  • Entrants have to be qualified to NVQ Level 2 or above or have a minimum of five years’ experience.
  • To enter, please submit a photo of a trend-led Afro look.
  • The image can be in colour or black and white and does not have to be shot professionally but the hair needs to be in focus.
  • The image must be between 2MB and 5MB in size.
  • Make sure you can recreate the look in a 45-minute live competition at Salon International on Saturday 10th October 2016 at ExCeL London.
  • The deadline is at 5pm on 9th September 2016.
  • Finalists in the live final will not have access to wet prep. They will be able to prep at their competition table prior to the start of the competition where make-up can be applied and hair can be wet sprayed or dampened down.
  • All technical work (rollers, pin curls etc.) and extension application must be completed prior to arriving at Salon International as there will not be time, or the facilities on site, to colour hair or apply extensions.
  • Only the model, hairdresser, make-up artist and stylist, if required, are allowed in the competition area prior to the start of the competition.
  • Once the competition has started, only the model and hairdresser will be allowed in the competition area.
  • All models must have their clothes styled and make-up applied prior to the start of the competition.
  • If the hair needs to be wet prior to the competition starting, water sprays can be used before and during the competition itself.
  • Hair cannot be washed in the toilet facilities.
  • Competitors need to bring all products, water sprays, equipment, gowns and towels with them as nothing is available or supplied.
  • One single socket power supply will be available for each contestant at their work station and extension leads cannot be used.
  • Judges will walk around the competition area during the competition itself and will be allowed to ask competitors questions about cut, colour and styling.
  • The winners will be announced on the HJ stage at Salon International on Saturday 10th October 2016.
  • Photographs will be taken throughout the day for use in Hairdressers Journal International and on HJi and will be issued with a comprehensive press release to both UK and international press.

HJ’s EXTENSIONS SPECIALIST OF THE YEAR – sponsored by Remi Cachet

  • Entrants have to be qualified to NVQ Level 2 or above or have a minimum of five years’ experience.
  • To enter, submit a beautiful image using extensions. You also need to submit a before shot and a during application image.
  • The images can be in colour or black and white and does not have to be shot professionally, but the hair does need to be in focus.
  • The images must be between 2MB and 5MB in size.

  • Open to all UK stduents who are unqualified, studying NVQ Level 1 or 2 or equivalent.
  • Entrants can be salon or college based.
  • To enter, submit a photo of a celebrity-inspired look.
  • The image can be in colour or black and white and does not have to be shot professionally, but the hair does need to be in focus.
  • The image must be between 2MB and 5MB in size.
  • Make sure you can recreate the look in a 45-minute live competition at Salon International on Monday 17 October at ExCeL London.
  • The deadline is 5pm on 9 September 2016.
  • Finalists in the live final will not have access to wet prep. They will be able to prep at their competition table prior to the start of the competition where make-up can be applied
