The hair surgery, stourbridge: interiors inspiration The Hair Surgery, Stourbridge Interiors Inspiration With a diverse mix of inspirational sources, from Harley Street clinics to art galleries, The Hair Surgery could have ended up a chaotic clash of design features. But under the watchful eye of owner Tim Scott-Wright, it all came together perfectly to produce a calm, light and sophisticated interior. Creating a space that met all his expectations took commitment, however. Tim sourced the furniture from a variety of outlets rather than relying on just the usual salon suppliers. Says Tim: "I didn’t want anything fussy, but I didn’t want clinical and minimalist white either. I wanted to create a space that was relaxed, comfortable and inviting." Prior to becoming Tim’s dream salon, the premises were a local doctor’s surgery – hence the name. "It needed a complete transformation," recalls Tim. "The building was very drab, practical-looking and dated, both inside and out. It needed completely gutting back to the bare brick to create an empty shell. On the plus side it had its own mini car park." Tim worked closely with interior designer Dan Tournay to ensure the salon evolved the way he wanted it to. The colour scheme is dark walnut, heritage grey and black. Says Tim: "I wanted a masculine feel, with splashes of colour provided by certain items of furniture and lighting to soften the whole look a little." Walnut-effect flooring was selected for its look and also for its practical, hardwearing qualities. "It looks like a wooden floor, but unlike wood it doesn’t scratch or swell or need constant oiling," says Tim. The reception features a custom-made high-gloss black desk with a solid granite top, surrounded by retail shelving lit by bespoke mood lighting. It offers a view of the open-plan salon, including walnut styling units and side tables, with gracefully curved, slender legs based on 18th century designs. Styling chairs feature dark walnut armrests and, in contrast, are upholstered in black leather. Tim is satisfied he has achieved his vision for the salon. "From the outside I think you immediately get the feel of a destination salon," he says. "When you walk in you get a warm welcome and a relaxed approach to top quality hairdressing."
