Milk hairdressing in mid calder doesn’t follow the herd

Milk hairdressing in mid calder doesn’t follow the herd Milk Hairdressing, Mid Calder Combining a classically elegant monochrome décor with a quirky dairy theme sounds like a difficult design challenge, but for Roy Rogers at Milk Hairdressing the brief has been beautifully brought to life for a distinctive but distinguished salon interior. The picture-perfect town of Mid Calder is home to this unusual salon – a long-time dream of former Saks educator Roy. "I have always loved it here," he explains. "And the salon was a gift. Literally the day that I decided I wanted to change my role, a To Let sign went up on this building. I did think the space was a little small, but I couldn’t stop thinking about the place and making plans, so I signed on the dotted line before anyone else could snap it up." [gallery ids="31955,31951,31952"] What inspired the décor? I got most of my ideas from my travels around Europe – boutique hotels, upmarket nightclubs and even burlesque clubs. I was also inspired by the sets of some of the shoots I’ve worked on; I like things to look and feel expensive and glamorous. How did working with an interior designer help you realise your vision? Using Tracey meant that I didn’t get too caught up in the idea of a theme – she ensured that the design remained classic. I’d seen her work before and she totally understood the brief. You have lots of cow touches that reflect the salon’s name, but the design still remains clean and classic. Can you tell us about the themed additions? We have wallpaper from The Art of Wallpaper, which features black and white drawings of cows in a field and there are other little touches – our bay trees are in milk churns and our bathroom is stocked with the Au Lait range from Scottish Fine Soaps. We also have Moorial, our full-sized baby cow who is always tethered outside the shop! Our price list is cow-themed too; the Stuck Up Cow is our hair-up service, the Snippy Cow is a cut and finish… [gallery ids="31957,31958,31956,31954,31953,31950"] How do you dress up the mostly monochrome interior? Black and white looks clean and expensive, but it’s easy to change the look by adding splashes of colour. We can add new towels or use seasonally-themed flowers to update the look instantly. As our theme is very neutral, the products also stand out and attract attention. Has working with a small space been a help or hindrance? I wanted an intimate boutique feel that was small enough to offer a personable and individual experience, but which was still big on creativity, technique and expertise. I was initially disappointed because the interior seemed too small, but our clients’ feedback has been excellent. Everyone has expressed how much they prefer our space to some of the larger salons in the area as they don’t feel intimidated and are able to build up a real relationship with their stylist.
