The social - winner of l’oréal colour trophy men's image award We  caught up with Ky Wilson, founder of The Social, which took home the Men’s Image Award at the 2017 L’Oréal Colour Trophy. Tell us about your winning look I collaborated with my good friend Frank Lillywhite, who I've worked with for many years on various projects including festivals and ongoing education. He also uses The Social as his London base. We wanted to work to our skill strengths and deliver something that represented us as a company and individually. We were ecstatic with our entry I knew if we didn't win we would have been super proud regardless! But that wasn't the case!! As we smashed it with a unanimous decision. What made you go for a curly look? Ever since I started entering hair industry competitions, I always wanted to win with a curly hair look. It makes it even more relevant that our screens are constantly filled with tight fades. Don't get me wrong it's a great skill to have but let's not forget, it's not the only one! Once we found the model the rest all fell into place! Tell us about the day itself My sidekick Frank was with me throughout offering support when needed and also telling me when to stop which is a crucial part of the styling process. As hairdressers, we feel the need to keep touching hair as we think we own it! A vital part of styling is knowing when to stop, step back and take a look with a different prospective. With so many people telling us how good our model looked it was hard not to get caught up with it all. We finished our job and then it was up to our model joe to carry himself and own it! Tell us how it felt when The Social was announced as the winner? It was really strange moment for both of us. So many people had told us that they thought our look would win and how much they liked it, so in a weird way we were already winners because that was our goal from the very start, to create something different that would be appreciated for its sheer quality. Looking back, I think the really special moment was when judge, Jason Miller, announced that in all his years of judging he had never seen such a clear winner and the decision was unanimous! For anyone to say that when we were up against such talent was a very special moment for us and one we will never forget. What plans do you have for The Social going forward? Already since winning, The Social, London is progressing. We’re moving to an incredible new space in East London, focusing on being the main hair hub for stylists to use as their base from all over the world! Not only that but hiring my space out to product brands, bloggers and photographers and really playing with the social element of what we are all about!
