A short guide to beard shaping

A short guide to beard shaping Matt Robinson, of Mister Robinson’s Barber Shop and part of the Crew Elite artistic team for American Crew, offers his tips on beard shaping. TO START Always take a moment to look at your client, look for natural strengths in their bone structure and face shape, then work towards enhancing them. SHORT BEARDS For short beards or clients looking to grow their beard, start by creating strong lines. Follow natural curves to enhance flow. A defined clipper line along the throat will encourage girth and dictate direction. Light scissor work keeps stragglers to a minimum and the beard looking full and neat. LONG BEARDS For longer Beards again consider the shape of the face and comb through the beard to get rid of any tangles. From the profile position look for jaw and cheek lines. Gently highlight them with a trimmer to create lines from ear to the corner of the mouth - this will strengthen the top line of the beard created a more masculine shape. Clear the throat below the choke line. Literally create a choke hold above the adams apple and follow the line from index finger to thumb clearing any hair underneath. This will stop the beard from being pushed outwards & allow it to sit comfortably on the chest. Again create that strong jaw line with the razor and keep it looking sharp and tidy with a long scissor trim to eliminate any loose ends. PRO TIP Use a razor to push lines to create a fuller, sharper finish on the cheeks. Create a clean line that gently curves from ear to mouth parallel to the jaw. FINISH Always finish with a nourishing oil to maintain skin condition and encourage healthy hair growth, I use American Crew Beard Serum because it nourishes without oiliness or shine.
