Over 2,000 hairdressing businesses launched since lockdown New data from O2 Business shows that 2,646 beauty and hairdressing businesses launched in the UK since lockdown in March this year. Despite much of the country’s industries and services shutting down to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the figures suggest that the country's entrepreneurial spirit hasn’t been quashed – especially for the beauty and hair industries. Although hair salons were not permitted to reopen until early July, the analysis has shown a rise in hairdressing business launches since March, with owners hoping to cater to clients who are keen to book in for treatments after the three-month lockdown. Over 190,000 companies have started up since the UK went into lockdown on March 24, and entrepreneurs have been gaining in confidence since. While only 42,254 companies were formed in April at the height of the pandemic, and 58,892 in May, in June the figure jumped to over 77,000, an increase of 84% from just two months prior. According to Companies House records, London is the nation’s start-up capital by volume alone, with 51,937 businesses new businesses. However, when taking population into account, Manchester comes out on top, where 4,014 new companies were registered – meaning one per 143 people (versus one per 172 in London) had started a new venture. Additionally, Leeds (4,539), Glasgow (2,243) and Bristol (2,076) also saw new companies springing up in their thousands. “Despite the difficulties of launching a new business at this moment, it’s encouraging to see so many entrepreneurs ready to get the nation back on its feet,” says an O2 Business spokesperson. “The number of businesses adapting to continue serving their local communities is inspiring, and technology has proven to be a significant enabler in helping entrepreneurs to continue innovating.” The findings follow on from the news that hair salons on average lost £9,000 due to the coronavirus.
