Jennifer Aniston's Most Iconic Hair Colour Looks

From ‘The Rachel’ to her classic golden highlights, Jennifer Aniston’s hair history has a number of iconic hair colour looks. HJ spoke with celebrity colourist Michael Canalé about how he colours Jennifer Aniston’s hair, as well as her most iconic hair looks of all time, from Friends through to The Morning Show.

How can I recreate Jennifer Aniton’s hair colour in the salon?

“My first tip is to work with the natural base colour – medium brown is my favourite,” says Michael. “I use paper-thin highlights to bring the colour down to a light brown, emphasising a little more highlighting on the ends to make it look like natural summer blonding.

“If you must cover grey, I prefer semi-permanent, which is much easier to control when highlighting. Once this colour is achieved, I insert the signature highlights,” he says. “The colour is sandy blonde, which really works with Jennifer’s skin undertones and eye colour. Sandy colours go very well with warm, golden tones.

“25 years ago, I developed a very special gloss for Jennifer Aniston, it gives her the incredible shine that attracts you to her hair,” says Michael, who has now launched his own line, Color By Canalé, which replicates the gloss he used on Jennifer Aniston. Here, he shares her most iconic hair colours and how he created them.

‘The Rachel’ is one of Jennifer Aniston’s most iconic hair colour looks. “After the initial colour was made with paper-thin highlights, we used the original colour bath to blend the highlights close to the roots and make the elongated hair lighter,” says Michael.

2. Marie Claire Magazine (July 2011)

“This was the lightest I have ever made Jennifer’s hair with highlights.  After the movie Just Go With It was filmed, this is one of the most requested colours and cut,” he says.

3. Derailed (2005)

“This was the only time we ever dyed Jennifer’s hair dark, medium reddish brown,” says Michael. “All the other times were artificial.”

4. Post-Lockdown

“Jennifer’s first colour back from COVID-19.  This was the first day salons in Los Angeles were released from being shut down,” says Michael.

5. The Morning Show

“Created with highlights and my new Canalé Signature Gloss in Midnight Blue. We gradually moved her back into the golden girl with Cool Blue,” he says. “As the season winds down, we started letting the gold tones take over in preparation for the award seasons.”
