Grease is the Word! How to Create 1950s Pincurls

by akesha / last updated September 12, 2018

To celebrate 40 years since the release of the iconic film Grease, Salon Services teamed up with OPI, Wella and ghd to host a Grease-themed day of Summer Lovin’ hair colour and styling. Here, Fergal Doyle from Wella Professionals and Lorna Baker from ghd share a step-by-step guide to creating a 1950s pincurls look they’re hopelessly devoted to…

Inspired by Frenchie’s iconic pink curls, this retro look oozes Hollywood glamour. The vampy magenta shade is flattering on most skin tones and the fun and flirty victory rolls will stay up as long as you do. Just add a Pink Ladies’ jacket!

To get the retro look, you will need the following products:
Wella Professionals EIMI Natural Volume Mousse
● Wella Professionals EIMI Root Shoot
ghd GOLD Styler
Salon Services Plain Hair Grips
● ghd Paddle Brush

Styling Process:
1. To give extra hold and stop hair being soft and slippery, start by applying Wella Professionals EIMI Natural Volume Mousse and Wella Professionals EIMI Root Shoot to damp hair, then dry thoroughly without parting the hair

2. Starting on top of the head, in the middle at the front hairline, take a 4cm by 2cm size section of hair and insert the ghd GOLD Styler horizontally

3. Roll the stylers under a full turn then glide through staying horizontal, continually turning the stylers slowly to keep the hair in the middle of the plates

To get even longer lasting hold, wrap the curled section of hair around two fingers and pin securely to the head with hair grips

4. Repeat throughout the whole head working in a ‘brick’ pattern to the nape of the head

5. Allow hair to cool, then release curls one at a time, placing the parting where desired, then brush into a smooth wave with a paddle brush

6. For the Victory Rolls, take a triangular section at the front side of the head (widest part of the triangle at the bottom), back-brush then roll up and secure with grips

7. Repeat on the opposite side of the head

To achieve this striking colour follow these steps!

2. Rinse and apply Wellaplex No.2 Bond Stabilizer for 10 minutes then shampoo with Wella Professionals Invigo Nutri-Enrich Shampoo and apply Invigo Post Colour Treatment or Elements Conditioner
3. Next, apply Wella Professionals Color Fresh Create Semi-Permanent Hair Colour in High Magenta and leave to develop for 20 minutes
4. Rinse and apply Koleston Perfect 55/65 + Welloxon Perfect 6% on the roots
5. Leave to develop for 35 minutes, then rinse and remove in the normal manner
