Is the shag making a comeback? the 2019 way to wear the 1970s style When trends from decades past make a comeback making them relevant for the current era can be tricky for everyday life. Most styles look amazing strutting down the catwalk on a supermodel but what about when your client gets it up on their phone as a reference picture? Luckily the shag haircut is one that transcends fashion and the real world. The shag haircut was created by barber and hairstylist Paul McGregor for actress Jane Fonda in the early 1970s and for the decade that followed both genders embraced the longer style. The defining qualities of the shag is the fullness around the crown and the feathered layers which are often completed with a long full or side fringe.

Shag Haircut – The 2019 Remix

"The shag for me has always had a sexy rock chic vibe," says Bruce Masefield. "I love the idea of this hairstyle on luscious curls. On straighter hair, it must be given a lived in look using texture sprays and sea salts to bring this 1970s iconic look into the year 2019." Gigi Hadid for Vogue Mexico is a great example of how to bring this look into the present day. Her hair was styled in the popular millennial mid-length style, but feathered for the classic shag style and a long, choppy full fringe finished off the look. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx-qNPqnXSy/ British hairdresser of the year nominee Cos Sakkas is a fan of the style's reemergence: "It’s a style that suits everyone" he says, "all hair textures and face shapes, with lightness and movement that looks effortless and loose. Length-wise, it can range from chin-length to below the shoulders." If a client is looking to try the shag haircut, then Cos advises recommending a fringe. "The key feature is the fringe. It can be worn without one, but a fringe that skims the eyelashes really brings it to life." For even more hair inspiration head to our gallery Lead image - Hooker & Young
