Grey hair on trend for 2015 as #grannyhair hits headlines

We called it last year, but grey hair shows no sign of slowing down as the surprise must-have cult colour of 2015. Aubrey O'Day, Shannon Bex and Debby Ryan all revealed steely shades this weekend, while Kylie Jenner, Rihanna and Perrie Edwards have all experimented with grey hair in the last few months. The hashtag #grannyhair has taken social media by storm and even made headlines as women across the globe decide that going grey early isn't quite so bad after all. We caught up with colourist Neil Barton to find out how to get the look. "Grey hair is having a moment. We saw it on the runway at Jean Paul Gaultier and it’s filtered through to celebrities such as Kylie Jenner and Nicole Richie. It has even warranted its own hashtag as #GrannyHair blows up on Instagram! "It is now becoming more mainstream, with many clients opting for greyish tones. It’s important to get the shade just right though and this granny chic trend won’t work on all skin complexions as it can leave some looking washed out. However, when done correctly, you can nail the look of the moment. "It can be a hard colour to achieve with no damage to the hair. Always have an indepth consultation so that a plan of action can be worked out with the client. It will usually take around six months to get hair to the gorgeous grey colour, depending on how much colour build-up the client already has on their hair and the current condition of their hair. The client will ideally have to grow out as much of their existing colour as possible. "Once the client is back to as much of their natural colour, the hair is then bleached to bring it up to almost white and then an ash/ice toner is placed over it."
