Hairdressing legend peter collinge has sadly passed away The Collinge name is synonymous with hairdressing and we are sad to report the passing of Peter Collinge, OBE. He died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 92. A hugely successful competition hairdresser in the 1950s and 1960s, Peter Collinge opened his first salon in Liverpool in 1954 having worked alongside his father, a barber at the family salon since 1948. Peter went on to establish a hugely successful salon group and training salon in Merseyside, that now operates under the Andrew Collinge name. President of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing from 1974 to 1976, Peter Collinge was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992. He received the prestigious Fellowship Gold Medal in 2012 and was awarded an OBE for his services to hairdressing in the same year. “Peter was an absolute gentleman and built a fantastic business that the family have continued to grow and develop and our love and thoughts go to Andrew, Sarah, Liz and all the family - and extended family at this time,” said Jayne Lewis-Orr, Executive Director of HJ. Andrew Collinge posted a personal statement on his Twitter Account about his father, which said: “Sadly my father passed away during the early hours of this morning. He died peacefully in his sleep. He had recently beaten Covid-19 but the virus took its toll on his general health and at the grand old age of 92 he was unable to recover. The family would like to say that during these past weeks he has only had the most wonderful care from the NHS and the dedicated nursing teams looking after him. Dad was a great person and he loved life. He was blessed to have many friends and we all loved his entertaining stories and his gregarious nature. He loved the craft of hairdressing, the creativity, the clients and colleagues and enjoyed visiting the salons and keeping us on our toes. He was a brilliant hairdresser and educator – his legacy lives on throughout our salons and training school. Dad was a visionary in the hairdressing world and greatly respected. His commitment to training and ensuring successful ongoing careers to thousands of young people throughout the North West and beyond was recognised when he received an OBE in 2012 for services to hairdressing and training. He was a devoted husband to the late Hazel and a wonderful father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be hugely missed.”
